The All-Time Best Shortstops

List Criteria: Only shortstops and no other infield positions.

Who are the all time best shortstops in Major League Baseball? That's a loaded question, because there are so many potential top candidates. This list is an attempt to compile all of them in one place. Not surprisingly, several players on this list could easily be considered some of the greatest baseball players of all time, too. Feel free to vote for the shortstops that you think are the greatest to ever play the game. You can also re-rank this list any way you like.

Many of the greatest shortstops in MLB history were split time players - meaning they spent time also playing in another position. Examples of these kinds of players listed here include the great Ernie Banks and Robin Yount: Both are MLB hall of fame players. They count. And some players on this list, including Derek Jeter, are still at it. Jeter is arguably one of the top current baseball players in the game.

What makes a great shortstop? First of all, you need an incredibly sharp-witted, athletic player in the position. A great shortstop will have consistency and stability, and a great defensive range. They should be able to run down balls in both directions, thus helping to cut back on the opposing team's runs. They also need a great arm, to be sure they can throw base runners out quickly and efficiently. And, ideally, you want a shortstop to be a great hitter. Several people on this list could be considered some of the best hitters in baseball history.

Playing shortstop is *not* easy. Everyone listed here is (or was) amazing in the position, but who earns the title of the greatest ever?
