The biggest problem with lists of boxing greats is the bias towards heavyweights due to the extra exposure they have tended to get over the years. As I write this, the master list would seem to suggest that the second greatest boxer, pound-for-pound, in the entire history of all 16 weight categories (other than heavyweights) is not as good as the 5th best heavy. And that 6 of the top 8 and 7 of the top 10 p4p fighters in history are from the heavyweight division. I'm not saying my list is perfect (even tho it is ;-) ) but at least I have tried to analyse all fighters from all divisions and not focused on the most famous ones. You can see my comments on the late Joe Frazier in an earlier note. I have total respect for the man but seriously - the 6th best fighter in history? Check out his actual record and then compare it with that of Hagler, Jones, Chavez, Pep, Monzon, Arguello, Duran, Jofre etc and see if that seems a realistic assessment to you. Just trying to get a debate started and some serious voting/list making here!

Joe Frazier at 11/08/2011 3:08 AM
RIP Smokin' Joe. There may have been more skilled boxers and there may have been more devastating punchers, but surely there has never been a tougher, harder, more determined man to ever step into a boxing ring. When Joe climbed through those ropes he was there to fight and he would keep fighting till the bitter end. He had heart and he had guts and he leaves behind a legacy for which all boxing fans will be grateful. Thanks for everything Joe.

Great boxer but when you come out of retirement after two years and are given a title shot (which is BS), lose badly to Marvin Hagler and still given the fight (title, again BS), your credit goes way down. Watch the fight between Leonard and Hagler and if you say Leonard won that fight, let me know what drug you are on.

He would have been the first to have 4 different weight titles if it were not for the drug using Arron Pryor. Argüello never lost any of his world titles in the ring, instead relinquishing them each time in pursuit of titles in higher weight classes.
