I always passed by Doctor Who over the years, but I started following the show with the start of the 11th Doctor and while I have seen a few episodes of other Doctors, this is the one that got me hooked and I think Amy Pond character just creates such a natural dynamic.

Even as good as Matt Smith is Amy is the one who is really carrying the show.
(that's why she got 4th on my list)

No Liz? She was able to understand what the Doctor said. Brains are sexy!

Jamie deserves more votes. He was so cute running around in that kilt.

I understand why Dodo is not there, but she will always be one of my favs. I thought she was charming.

You can tell how old and/or when the poster started watching the show by which characters they add and rank highest. Don't discount the episodes before the series "reboot". Sure the special effects aren't as cool to modern eyes and the sets are a bit wobbly, but the acting and writing has always been great. Some of the best stories were in the first five seasons of the original series.

What about Tegan Jovanka: longest-serving companion in terms of continuous years on the series (3 years, 1 month)

      Adric? Tegan?

We're due some repeats of the old stuff, Beeb, if these didn't even make the list!

I liked Adric too. He's a rather unsung hero of the series. I think they should have more kids as companions instead of always having sex kittens.

Dunno if I'd go as far to say they need more kids. It just happened to work with P. Davison and the younger crew, he was more like a "father" to them. I'm not sure it'd work with Matt Smith or any of the guys since the reboot.

Jack Harkness, Madame de Pompadour, River Song & Lady Christina De Souza would not & should not be considered as "Companions" This list should only have those who appeared in more than one CONSECUTIVE Episode. Pompadour & Lady De Souza appeared only in ONE episode of the series Harkness & Song are recurring characters. The Brigadier & Sgt. Benton would also be under that list.

        Amen!

Although I don't know if I'd agree about the Consecutive episode arguments... I consider Jack and River (along with Benton and the Brigadeer) "legit" companions, although some of his travels were "stow-away" travels.

De Souza, Astrid, Lady Pomapdour, etc... NO, they do not count.
        1. Hero
The Greatest Doctor Who Companions of All Time at 2/25/2012 10:31 AM
          I agree.
I would count Jack, River, and the Brigadier. Though I wouldn't could Benton just like I don't count Donna's grandfather, they are more of recurring status (a companion to a companion if you will).

And as far as people like Astrid and De Souza they aren't even recurring they just work with the doctor in one episode and if that is all that is required to be a companion then I could name countless people from the old series that would also make the list.

(as a side note: I really wish this list (like most things on the internet) was not completely biased towards the new series)

With Kevin Casey on this one, otherwise the list is potentially enormous, and therefore pointless ... though I'd actually say a companion is someone who's appeared in at least two consecutive _stories_. If they go off in the TARDIS at the end of one story and are there at the beginning of the next, then they're a companion. Otherwise theyre just someone he met along the way, even if they're recurring characters.
