There are a myriad of reasons why lots of manga are hard to grip by people who have an "anchor to reality", just like there are people who can’t grasp Philip Glass’s music, or an abstract painting. But for some reason people often scream and shout about Anime being completely mind-bleedingly incomprehensible, and to an Anime geek (or an "Otaku", if you fancy that term) it's almost strange wondering why people can’t understand



This list is targeted for a specific sort of anime/manga, and is not supposed to be a blanket statement for all manga. This is specifically for "Shonen" manga and anime.

If you get confused by Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z and other action anime you might find a few a reasons why that is—however, if you're looking for how to understand FLCL, Yakitake Japan, and Super Milk Chan… well I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until I describe why Japanese humour is so great.

Staggering page numbers, an infinite amount of strange and fascinating characters buried in almost as many digressions, technical and obscure theoretical findings...that's what these masterpieces are all about. If your idea of a good (and in my opinion with these works, great) read is a true intellectual challenges that affords the careful and diligent reader with some pretty amazing ideas/insights, then bust out the reading glasses and try not to strain your brain. Understanding any one of these books on a first read might just be an exercise in futility, since I think the authors themselves might not even understand them fully, but they're all great in their own way.

Why fantasy stories? Why list the best fantasy books if movies are probably being made about all of them? Yeah: a crime/thriller novel might have danger and chases, a fiction story might tell of human struggle and a biography might give insight into someone in history. I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point in the last few years all of the vampires in fiction, whether it be movies, TV, or comics, became giant vaginas. I love vampire movies, and vampires in general, and it really hurts to see so many mediocre vampires; and in turn, bullshit vampire hunters. True Blood is great drama, but where's the mass vampire slaughtering I want and love?
