How many people do you know, do the exact same job as their brother or sister.
If my sister had become a plumber, it doesn't follow that I will want to be a plumber, too. Why is it that the siblings of so many rock stars think they should be a rock star, too? Rock stars should give their family members a chunk of their inheritance in advance, and make them sign papers that they will not enter a recording studio, even if it is to unclog the toilet.

Manchester, Tennessee June 2010: Reviews of all the sets I could manage to catch at Bonnaroo 2010. Except for the first Bonnaroo in 2002 I have attended, and loved, every Bonnaroo Music Festival. 2010 lineup was not as strong as previous years line-ups, but the festival didn't disappoint. 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival headliners are Kings of Leon, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, and Dave Matthews Band - solid bands and artists to be sure, but they don't have the "wow factor" of prior year acts like Metallica, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Phish etc. I have decided not to "rank" the sets because after Day 1 it just didn't seem like it was that kind of a festival for me, unlike last years Bonnaroo or this year's Coachella. So the list will remain in the order that I saw the sets. BUT, since I am nothing if not a Ranker, here's the highlights, ranked and mostly surprising to me: 1 - Lucero 2 - Stevie Wonder 3 - ISIS 4 - Dave Matthews Band! 5 - Ween 6 - Medeski, Martin & Wood!! 7 - Jeff Beck To see my reviews of prior Bonnaroos and other music festivals like Bonnaroo go here: http://www.ranker.com/profile-of/clark-benson

Top 500 Rock Bands isn't 100% accurate as this includes solo artists, and though it does not include jazz or blues it does include soul, R&B, Americana, reggae, and classic country (yes, that is somewhat arbitrary, but for whatever reason i listen to blues and jazz differently than the rest, and would be too hard to compare Miles or Ornette or Hooker to, say, Aerosmith). Criteria for my greatest bands of all time list is a combination of recorded albums, live shows I've seen, live recordings I've heard, radio songs, and even overall image/album covers/general coolness or uniqueness. I guess that was a way of trying to explain that the ranking is just a gut feeling. But it's probably about 50% based on "live chops", hence the lower ranking of the Beatles, who quit playing live before the most creative parts of their career. I am very into live shows and live recordings. Obviously, this list will change over time. I'm adding commentary to items whenever i get a spare minute or something interesting comes to mind about a band, probably 10-20 entries a month.

Have you ever let someone look at your IPOD and have them say, "You have this song on there? How embarrassing." I think we all have and it had to be one of these songs on this list.

Ronnie James Dio's Greatest Album Moments

The best Dio albums, spanning his full career. For about a 10 year period from the mid-70s into the mid-80s, Dio fronted prime years of 3 of the greatest metal bands to ever walk the earth. Ronnie Dio recorded quite a few records in a long career, but these are the only 10 you need to hear unless you are a die-hard, although there are moments on Black Sabbath's "Dehumanizer", "Live Evil", and the 3rd Dio album worth hearing. Call it a Dio primer or a Dio record buying guide. RIP RJD - you were one of a kind as a vocalist. And you gave us the "horns". Metal wouldn't be what it is today without you. Also just a note, if you want to see more stats about these albums just click "change display" button. Neat, huh? -for anyone interested, Sabs are #7, Rainbow #45, Dio #192 on my alltime list http://www.ranker.com/list/top-500-musical-groups-and-artists-of-alltime/clark-benson

The best bands. Ever. A mix of my opinion, that of critic's lists, and that of many other people on this site as well as my friends and family's favorite bands too. Bands are rated on how influential and skilled they are, and how good their songs are.

How does one seem to keep up with the cutting edge without obviously being a poser? How can you make that hot hipster think you're hip as well? First of all, don't try to like the "coolest" or most "up and coming" band of the moment, because it's always possible that they're already passe in the hipster world. Instead, stick with the classics and a few things no one has heard of. Listen to these bands, read a little bit about them, and mention them in passing... And remember to use a condom.

"i think the ziggy/aladdin sane/diamond dogs period, as well as low/heroes/lodger periods were very interesting and productive. of course the one-two punch of 'the man..'./hunky dory wasn't too shabby. i really do like the glitzy/glam aladdin/diamond dogs period quite a bit. have you ever seen "The 1980 Floor Show" that was on The Midnight Special back in the mid-70's??????? "Time" - one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. thanks mick - you live on forever if that was the only one you ever laid down. i could bore you forever. i was a very heavy bowie fan. many acid trips to aladdin sane. that one may is tied for first with me."

"for me, Dogs was easily the most elaborate, theatrical of them all (including 'Ziggy' + 'A Lad'). Of course it was 1974 - he had just got done with Raw Power, the Dolls had In Too Much Too Soon Out, T Rex had put out The Slider, and Elton John had put out Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Kiss had completed Dress to Kill (still their finest studio LP in my view) and everyone was running around fucking and taking drugs - oh shit - how humiliating - i forgot (i knew i had) one of the finest of all the Bo LPs (drugs reminded me because he was blasted out of his mind living in LA on tons of cocaine at the time, shortly after DDogs - Station To Station (see revised list now) ! Anyway - i can remember unfortunately - the '70s were out of control and truly sucked in most ways. Despite the pseudo-hipness of this 70s revival these days, in reality those days were a bore: The Brady Bunch was real - that actually reflected our culture. Bell bottoms were real and NOT thought to be funny and cool. It was the status quo. You couldn't BUY straight leg Levi's - they were all flared. I remember buying what they called "Student Flare" Levi's. Plus the greatest (for me) Queen album came out in 74 (perhaps 73) - Sheer Heart Attack. Some pretty good music - It's Only Rock N Roll. The Rock Music Awards - Keith Moon rides out on the stage with Ann Margaret strapped to the back (Tommy was out). Alice Cooper. wow - i can't seem to stop. Transformer. stop. stop. Roxy Musix - Country Life, Siren. stop. Hues Corporation - Rock The Boat. STOP STOP STOP. Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting. The Stylistics - You Make Me Feel Brand New. Rufus. War. AWB. a white kid in a black city. STOP STOP STOP STOP STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP."
