He attended college in Washington, D.C. at The Catholic University of America, where he graduated in 1960 with a B.A. He moved to New York City to pursue a career as an actor and landed a role in the Broadway production of The Sound of Music, where he met his first wife, actress Lauri Peters. They divorced in 1967, and he later married Marcheline Bertrand in 1971, who was Angelina Jolie’s mother. They divorced in 1980.
