Shortly after Lincoln's second inauguration, Peter Baumgras, leading Washington DC painter of portraits, landscapes and still lifes, began to paint this portrait from memory and from photographs, and he finished it soon after Lincoln's assassination. In 1931, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. purchased it for Brown University, where it remains today. Baumgras also painted portraits of Lincoln's son Willie, and of President Garfield and his wife, Lucretia.
