Alltime Best Bands from Illinois By   [84 more lists]

Chicago bands and Illinois bands in general. As a native Chicagoan who went to school in Champaign, i feel entitled to weigh in on this matter. That said, i'm probably missing the boat on some less prominent Chicago bands of the late nineties and "oughts".

One side note to this list - for the most part, i have a thing where i can tell by a band name if i WON"T like a band, it's about 95% accurate for bands that have albums out, and probably even more for all bands. the two times in my life where i have been most wrong about band names happened when i was still living in Illinois back in 1991. I saw a band whose name i hated but who had some local buzz at the Lounge Ax - they were called the Vulgar Boatmen. As predicted, they totally weren't for me. So, having broken my rule and gone out to see a band with a horrible name, i decided i wasn't going to get burned twice. The next two young bands i blew off, for "lame band name reasons" were called Uncle Tupelo and the Smashing Pumpkins.

doh!

Yes, Styx has spit out quite a bit of garbage over the years, but "the hits" and "the almost hit album tracks" add up. i would even go see an original Styx reunion, but i think 2 of them are now dead or something.

see my comment about Styx and multiply it X5 or so. REO defined cheesy AOR in the 70s, but they did have a couple of classic FM tracks in the mix, particularly "Golden Country" and "Ridin' The Storm Out"

Kudos on the Naked Raygun, but Big Black and the Jesus Lizard before Liz Phair, and certainly before Styx (and before Ministry). All right, the top five needs to be as follows: 1) Wilco 2) Naked Raygun 3) The Jesus Lizard (greatest live band on Earth and three other planets!) 4) Big Black 5) Cheap Trick with Smashing Pumpkins at a close 6). Ministry can go next then Liz Phair and so on. Again, it's super-great to see the mighty Naked Raygun get some props. Sweet list!

You're right, I did forget the Poster Kids, though I confess I haven't listened to them in at least 15 years. Not a Weasel fan (nor the other name punk/emo bands mentioned in other comments). You should make your own version - click the button on the top right of mine and it takes no time at all. Best Live Bands from IL would have the Lizard higher, no question (tho Cheap Trick, Raygun, and the Nels-Cline era Wilco are all killer live bands as well).

The Pumpkins were without a doubt one of the greatest bands of all-time when they started. In fact, I drove from Champaign to the Aragon to see the first show they ever played together with Jane's Addiction and we had no idea who they were but were blown away by the wall of sound from the guitars and drums. I saw them last year, for free thanks to XRT, and it was the single worst show I have EVER seen. I can't believe I wasted 2 hours of my life to see Corrigan act like a total ass and just try to antagonize the crowd. Everytime I hear them now i turn the song off immediately.

I saw them multiple times at Lounge Ax and would rank them above the Pumpkins.

She is, she is! (Styx might be nipping at her heels but they aren't likely to gain any ground since half of them are dead). then again Liz may drop if she puts out any more crapola like her last 2. . .
