The Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing (sometimes just referred to as the "Best Sound Oscar") is typically given to production sound mixers and re-recording mixers, honored for producing a sound mix that best compliments the corresponding film. It is often confused with the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, which typically goes to Supervising Sound Editors or Designers, and awards the best selection and assembling of a sound recording in preparation for the final sound mix or mastering process. (The "Sound Editing" award is sometimes also known as the "Best Sound Effects" or "Best Sound Effects Editing" statue as well.) The award was first handed out in 1930 at the 3rd Academy Awards ceremony. The 2012 Sound Mixing nominees were announced on January 24, 2012.
The "Sound Mixing Oscar" tends to go to films that have noticeably use of sound effects, particularly films with a lot of action. Recent winners have included "Black Hawk Down," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "King Kong," "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Hurt Locker," as well as the musicals "Ray," "Dreamgirls" and "Chicago." The 2010 winner was Christopher Nolan's "Inception," which beat out the eventual Best Picture winner "The King's Speech" for the trophy.
