Best TV Spinoffs By cdu827 [28 more lists]
What are the best TV spin-offs in history? This list definitely includes many. Some of the best TV spin-off shows were, well, spun off of wildly successful sitcoms and dramas, allowing faithful viewers of the original shows the chance to learn more about some of the original characters. Spin-off shows don't always work ('Joanie Loves Chachi,' anyone?) but this list proves that lightning can strike once, or more rarely, twice! With news that FOX's 'Glee' may get a spin-off (risky, but understandable given the show's success), we thought we'd take a closer look at some of the more memorable TV spin-offs over the years. Don't see your favorite on the list? Definitely add it!
- 1In 1999, writer-director Joss Whedon decided a spin-off of his popular WB series 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' was in order, and 'Angel' was born. 'Angel' proved a winner, running for five seasons. The show followed vampire Angel (David Boreanaz) as he works as a P.I. in L.A. 'Angel' was a great spin-off, and much, much darker than 'Buffy.'BUY @ amazon

- 2'Frasier,' a spin-off of NBC's 'Cheers,' must be included on this 'best of' list. Cheers bar regular Dr. Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) decides to leave Boston for Seattle, opening the door for a whole new cast of characters (and one other 'Cheers' patron, Frasier's wife Lilith (Bebe Neuirth). 'Frasier' wound up running for eleven seasons (1993-2004) - as long as 'Cheers.' Can anyone argue that this is one of the most successful spin-offs in TV history? Didn't think so.BUY @ amazon
- 3While 'The Simpsons' arguably doesn't qualify as a traditional spin-off TV show, it did begin as a series of shorts on FOX's 'The Tracey Ullman Show' in 1987 - so it's on the list. It has to be, because the rest is animated television history. Epic history. 'The Simpsons' is the longest-running animated series in TV history (22 seasons people, and we're heading into 23 now). Hard to believe an animated short is now THE most watched animated series ever! D'oh!BUY @ amazon

- 4'Torchwood' is a sci-fi spin-off of the British series 'Doctor Who.' Want your mind blown? 'Torchwood' is also an anagram for 'Doctor Who.' If you're a fan you already knew that, of course, but we figured those who didn't would think that's super cool. In 2006, Russell T Davies opted to spin-off 'Doctor Who' after enjoying a LOT of success with his revival of the classic British TV show. 'Torchwood' is still going strong - not surprising at all, given the cult following of 'Doctor Who.' Give the fans what they want: quality TV shows with compelling plots, and you've got gold.BUY @ amazon
