Since the biggest audience usually goes to see a film the opening weekend, the numbers are a great indication of overall financial success. Some movies open big, with over a hundred million dollars on the first weekend, while other films are sleeper hits, making a modest amount before growing over time due to word of mouth.

 

The films on this list made the most amount of money in the opening weekend in 2013. Iron Man 3, for example, made over $174 million in just a few days, making it the highest grossing opening weekend of 2013. Other movies like Man of Steel and Fast and Furious 6 also made movie history with their large opening weekend numbers. Some of the other films on this list have bigger gaps in opening weekend gross, such as The Heat with 39 million and The Purge with 34 million.
