Books by Neal Stephenson By mathayus [40 more lists]
Neal Stephenson's novels, from my most favorite to least favorite.
- 1Neal Stephenson1995Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Cyberpunk, Postcyberpunk More
- 2Neal Stephenson1992-06Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Cyberpunk, Postcyberpunk More“ Stephenson's break through book and understandably so. If you like books for mind-blowing ideas, Snow Crash is as good as it gets. Also a hell of a lot of fun. Still, as a writer, he was still quite young at this point. „

Quicksilver
Neal Stephenson2003-09-23Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Historical novel“ I'm writing about the books of the Baroque Cycle together as they are really a cohesive unit. Putting them in reverse chronological order to represent the truth of how much I enjoyed them: The further you go, the more fun it gets.To me this is really Stephenson's most impressive piece of writing. Absolutely massive scale, strong character development, and powerfully effective story archs on 3 levels: novella, book, and cycle. I rate it below Diamond Age and Snow Crash simply because it hasn't had as much of an effect on me, and it isn't a collection that I reread over an over again. „ - 6
Anathem
Neal Stephenson2008-09-09Science Fiction, Speculative fiction“ His latest, and proof that he's still got the great ideas coming. „ - 7Neal Stephenson1999Novel, Fiction“ The first of Stephenson's mega-novels, and the last one where he had clear problems with pacing the ending. Still good, but what wasn't so bad in shorter novels is more frustrating when it's a lot of work to get through. „

Zodiac: The Eco-Thriller
Neal Stephenson1988-05Science Fiction, Speculative fiction“ Seems overly harsh rating these last two novels at this scale since there are much worse novels out there I'm sure...I just don't read many of them.If you absolutely love Snow Crash, go ahead and read Zodiac. What you'll find is essentially a very similar book (the main characters are essentially the same in tone) but without a similar level of mind-blowing ideas. „ - 9Neal Stephenson, William Rollo1984Science Fiction, Speculative fiction“ Yeah, wouldn't recommend it unless you've read everything else by Stephenson, like it a lot, and want to see how he developed as a writer. Even he seems a bit embarrassed by it. Personally, I just see it as evidence that you've got to start somewhere, and he definitely shows more than a glimmer of what he'd eventually become. „
