The books that had the greatest impact on me, mostly in terms of my appreciation of literature or the world around me, listed in order of the greatest overall impact. I felt like, in fairness, I should probably include more children's and young adult literature that I read when I was more impressionable, but that seemed like an overall less interesting list.

The book that I read whose protagonist most reminded me of myself. I realize that's revealing a lot about myself, some of which may trouble you. Just try to deal with it.

The first Kurt Vonnegut novel I ever read and loved, which itself was pretty important. (He became my favorite author). But this was also the science-fiction book that changed my vision of what science-fiction could be. Not just stories about rockets and robots and monsters, but funny, genuine, humane and perceptive stories about the real world around us.

The book that changed my personal politics forever. Growing up in conservative Orange County, I was never really exposed to the hard truths about American history and how the country we know and love came to be, before reading Howard Zinn. I don't want to say the book RADICALIZED me, because I'm not very radical, but it was shocking to say the least when I first worked through it for a history assignment.

In terms of the actual writing, you can't really top Fitzgerald's use of language in "Gatsby." It's a story that really wouldn't hold a lot of interest for me normally if it weren't so beautifully realized.

Speaking of books that alter the course of one's personal philosophy..."Nineteen Eighty-Four" is maybe the most gripping, cinematic political manifesto ever composed. Influential not only to my tastes in literature but film as well.

You sir have good taste. I have read most (including some on my list) of yours but will put a few (such as the Zinn) on my sadly-massive "books to read" list. Eggers I knew tangentally in college, blown away when i figured out it was the same guy about halfway thru reading Staggering Genius. Also worth noting there is a very prolific Ranker user named Val1s (he is especially big in the video game categories). Finally, props on Phantom Tollbooth!

A tasteful and well-balanced list. I gotta say, very impressive.
