This form of mantra meditation, specifically the Transcendental Meditation technique was originally established as a religion in the 1950's, but quickly took a more spiritual, scientific approach. This shift was widely considered a move to make TM more appealing to the secular western world, as opposed to the east (India) where the practice originated.
