This chronological list of Popes is ordered from Pope Pius III to Pope Clement VIII, and has lots of pictures. Pope Julius II, the second pope of the 16th century, is especially famous as the Pope who commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the Sistine Ceiling within the Vatican. As the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the Bishop of Rome, it is the Pope's duty to spread the gospel of Jesus and interpret God's will so all Catholics of the Holy See may enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Many Popes, especially earlier ones, achieved sainthood and are revered to this day.
