Experimental films that should not be missed By   [3 more lists]

In light of the recent screenings of Kenneth Anger's experimental films at the Hollywood Cinespia Cemetery Screenings, I thought I would contribute a collection of experimental films that in my opinion, should not be missed.

    Time Piece

Time Piece Experimental films that should not be missed Film picture
A not so well known experimental film produced, written and starring the one and only...Jim Henson. This almost nine minute short begins with Henson himself lying in a hospital bed. A series of ticking clocks and rhythmic sounds enforce the idea that time is always passing by. The only dialogue within the film, "Help," gives the overwhelming feeling that time is something we can never escape. Of course there are also surreal images of Henson's head on a dinner platter, a marionette skeleton and a pink painted elephant. It's definitely a new look at Henson that should not be missed.

    mothlight

mothlight Experimental films that should not be missed Film picture
Mothlight is an experimental film created by Stan Brakhage, a highly regarded 20th century experimental filmmaker. The film was created with Brakhage's collection of moth wings and plant life that he taped to a film strip. The film stands as a piece of poetry that attempts to create life once again from death. Although like all poetry, Mothlight can be interpreted in any way you'd like.

    L'Age D'Or

L'Age D'Or Experimental films that should not be missed Film picture
Also a wonderful film done by Dali and Bunuel. This film consists of a series of vignettes that follow the romance of two lovers. The film begins with the couple being torn apart by the church among others. The couple is reunited in a memorable scene where the woman sucks passionately on a statues big...hard...toe. The final scene however, is one in a million in which an orgy takes place and a rather well-known figure emerges from the love den exhausted and quite content.

    Un Chien Andalou

Un Chien Andalou Experimental films that should not be missed Film picture
A juxtaposition of surreal images inspired by the dreams of Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel. In this 1929 film written and directed by Dali and Bunuel a series of images are flashed upon the screen such as, a man slicing a knife through a woman's eye, a man dragging two grand piano's behind him with dead and decaying donkeys and the ten commandments, and hundreds of ants crawling out of a hole in a man's palm. Odd images...yes. However, don't let them turn you away from what is truly one of the best experimental films.

    Rabbit's Moon

Rabbit's Moon Experimental films that should not be missed Film picture
Rabbit's Moon, a unique and highly entertaining Kenneth Anger film. The short film follows a sad Pierrot as he tries to reach an unattainable moon that looms overhead. A high spirited Harlequin pops out of the forest and attempts to cheer up his Pierrot friend. Unsuccessfully doing so, he brings in a beautiful ballerina to try and undo the Pierrot's frown. Two versions exist, one with 60's pop songs as the soundtrack and the second with "It Came in the Night" by Raincoat. I recommend both...enjoy!

    (50's and 60's pop songs) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5855088917937778770

I couldn't find a link for the second version...if anyone finds it I'd love to know!
