I don't think it's right to list people who deny that they are homosexual. I feel it's an invasion of privacy, even of the deceased as it's disrespectful to them & their spouses & families, regardless of whether the person is heterosexual or wishes to remain in the closet. \n\nSexual orientation is a personal thing & I wouldn't like anyone to imply or say I must be what I appear to be if I'm not, would you?\n\nApart from that I think sites like this are important and helpful to homosexuals who need to be reminded that they are not alone. God willing homophobia, xenophobia and ALL discrimination will be stamped out someday. The Dirk Bogarde movie VICTIM is a reminder how much progress society has made in this direction.\n\nThanx4reading & God bless.

I certainly would agree with you if this were a list of any man who was thought to be gay, but this is a list of FAMOUS men throughout history who are thought to be gay. Your second point is really important & is what brought me to this site. I'm an 18yr old high school 'jock' living in Wisconsin, with a 'girlfriend', but I know I'm gay. Reading things like this literally pulls me back from some pretty dark & lonely places in my head.

Smalltownguy...I don't know if you will return to this site, but I hope you will continue to reach out to all the resources that are available for you to discover that being gay can be a wonderful experience. Yes, sometimes dark and lonely, but it need not be. You can do MUCH to bring light and warmth and celebration to your life.

It sounds like you're doing well in evaluating the realities of your life, but I'll put my email address here. Feel free to write if you would like some ideas on great reads. If you don't need ideas, that's terrific...please reach out to others who do. Best of luck in your journey. May it know few moments of darkness or loneliness. Lew @ MaineMusclex2@aol.com

Why are there women on this list? I thought it was supposedly a list of gay men, not women. They seem to list gay women towards the end and seemed to be scraping the bottom of the barrel for gay men towards the end.

this list does not seem to be thoroughly researched at all and questionable at best and towards the end it began to feel like it was totally being pulled out of one's arse...also, what's with all the women? Lady Gaga? For reals? Gonna go out on a limb here and say definitely not a gay man.

COMPLETELY WRONG. As a trained historian, the first glaring error was Robert Gould Shaw. Shaw was married - to a women. Obviously you do not have historians backing up your facts.

he would be completely unknown if he wasn't Oscar Wilde's lover.

No, every scholarly and historical document referring to him confirm he was a heterosexual (at least) womanizer, with occasional rumors of bisexuality.

You have the wrong Patrick White....You want the Australian author born in 1912; not the American football player. Check it out.

No one actually knows for certain what Leonardo's sexuality was. All anyone can say is he might have been, anyone who knows for sure is long dead.

Laurence Olivier at 10/25/2010 5:05 PM
I've read enough biographies to know this is true about Olivier and many other actors. What baffles me is Vivien Leigh's adoration and desire to be his wife. And even finally divorcing her, he quickly married another actress, Joan Plowright. WHY??

Clifton Webb at 10/25/2010 4:49 PM
Yes, his homosexuality seemed pretty evident, but he still managed to brilliantly portray Barbara Stanwyck's straight (though somewhat stuffy and cold) husband in "Titanic."
