The ultimate list of famous only children, with pictures. Only children are a group surrounded by myth and stigma, most of which are entirely false. The stereotype of a socially stunted, spoiled brat stems from a 19th century psychologist named G. Stanley Hall who, among other absurd conclusions about children, declared, "being an only child is a disease in itself." Like most psychologists of the time, his research practices were anything but credible and tended to reflect his own prejudices more than anything else. Modern studies show that once past their initial introduction to kindergarten, only children are just as social as any other child, with personalities that vary just as much. Scholastically, the amount of siblings within a family has also proven to be largely irrelevant. With the average family size shrinking, and only children becoming more common, it's good to see we're moving beyond outdated stereotypes.

    You may need to remove some of these. Carol Burnett has a younger half-sister Chrissy that she was raised with by their grandmother in a boarding house. She has spoken of her sister many times in interviews. Also, Tiger Woods has three older half siblings from his father Earl's 18 year first marriage. Barbara Striesand had an older half brother named Sheldon from her father's side of the family. Also, after her father died, her mother remarried and had a daughter named Roslyn who is 9 years younger than Barbara. The two of them appeared with their mother several years ago on a talk show and they performed together as Barbara's sister is also a singer. Finally, Brooke Shields has three half sisters from her father's remarriage. She mentions one of them in detail in her book "Down Came the Rain" when she was suffering post partum depression and how her sister worked to give her advice and try to help her. Just wanted to let you know that some of these are technically not only children since one or both of their parents had been married before and had other children that they were sometimes raised with the other children.

      I included them, because if all you have are half-siblings then typically you are still an only child on one side of your family. That said, I'm now reconsidering. I'll talk it over with a few other only children I know and make a decision. I wasn't aware of Barbara Streisand's other half sibling from her mother's side; I'll remove her. If you notice any others you feel I should possibly remove, please let me know.

        Matthew Perry has 5 younger half-siblings on his mother's side. I think they are much younger and he may not have spent much time with them when he was young because at some point, he moved to LA to live with his father and not his mother's new family and new children. Matthew Perry was super ambitious as a child and as a youngster. He was a junior tennis champion before he became an actor. He said so himself that he was super-driven to succeed at anything he did and would practice tennis for hours and hours and save dedication and focus went into his career in Hollywood. He was going to make it in Hollywood one way or another. He even wrote scripts and pitched t.v. shows before his success on "Friends". He is definitely an older son and definitely an only.

          I think what typically makes someone an "only child" is if they grow up in a sibling-less household. Regardless of how many half-siblings they have who grew up in seperate households who they may barely know. Like Suri Cruise...she's an only child, growing up in a 1 kid family, although she does have adult step-siblings.
