Fave TV shows of past 10 years By   [84 more lists]

Updated 3.8.11 to reflect Justified and Boardwalk Empire in otherwise-unspectacular TV season (and am really digging Season 2 of Justified as well - it's my fave new show). Also jumped Mad Men above my beloved Shield after a majestic last season.

Updated 8.29.10 - Mad Men climbs (I am only halfway thru the current season). Big Love drops majorly after a terrible, terrible season. Love Glee but hate American Idol-like autotune musical covers. Heroes last season was so bad I question whether they should stay even in the lower rings of this list. Had to move Survivor up a bit as well after a number of great seasons in a row after all these years.

Updated 2.10.10 - movement on the chart - Mad Men Season 3 sold me hook line and sinker. . . and Big Love this season has been a bit too over the top, hopefully it will reign itself back in... and this list has now basically become "Best TV shows of the Decade".

In my 20s i watched very little TV, and it's hard to compare old shows/shows i watched as a youth (when you are a bored kid, Charles Nelson Reilly on Match Game qualifies as entertainment) to current fare, so this isn't really an "alltime" list - but it's pretty close. i fear that the golden age of TV may have been approx 2000 - 2007 or so (mainly because HBO was on an unsustainable streak), but hopefully will be proven wrong. I did love a few shows in the 80s (St Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues, M*A*S*H) and early 90s (LA Law and Seinfeld), but honestly that is probably about it. I also find i have a hard time watching any show with a laugh track nowadays, which probably unfairly biases me towards the last 10 years of TV.

The reason the ratings are all clustered so high is because i am not listing the many shows i tried watching a few shows of and bailed on. So this list is basically every TV series I have watched at least a full season of since i got DirecTV, except perhaps for a few that i watched a season or so of and got cancelled to a level where I forgot.

I would also like to point out that a list like this brings up some general Ranking questions - for example, is it fair to combine cable shows (less episodes needed, more leeway with the sensors) with network shows. Should a show like The Simpsons - which I think very few longtime fans would disagree ain't what it used to be, but certainly doesn't suck - get punished because, well, they have done over 400 episodes, and they are bound to run out of ideas. Food for thought, eh? Personally, I try to strive for an average of all seasons, with a slight mental algorithmic weighting against brand-new shows because many first seasons prove to be the best and if you can't keep it up for at least 2 or 3 you will never make it to my Top 10.

Perfection. So thick it takes 3 or 4 episodes to fall all the way in, but once there, there is no going back. I seriously can't think of a single point where it strained credulity, be it in acting, writing, or directing.

i dropped Curb down a bit after a great season of Big Love. part of it is just that an hour drama is more bang for the buck, but the other issue with Curb is it can be a bit inconsistent. When it's on, it's the funniest thing you've ever seen. Also worth noting that Curb was a show I watched once after hearing a bunch of raves, but bailed on, just didn't like the humor. I gave it another shot in season 2 - something i almost never do - because friends whose opinions i respect kept talking about it, and found myself laughing out loud, and going back and watching the whole Season 1 and loving that as well.

Glee, you snaked in at the end of this decade, and if you can keep it up, I see you climbing this list - great first half of first season, but I also felt the same about the ladies on Wisteria Lane, so let's just say the jury is still out. Although the final season was significantly better than the penultimate, this show, like 6 Feet Under, got too over-the-top and dramatic over the years. Why do they do that on an HBO show for Chrissakes - they shouldn't need the ridiculous plot twists to keep people engaged.

I love that you have Friday Night Lights on your list. I thought only us gals fell for that show. Sigh.

P.S. Mad Men behind Rome? And behind Battlestar Galactica?? Both quality shows, I'll give you that. But this really is where the gender differences strikes, me thinks.

it took me awhile to get into first season of Mad Men, but I'm certainly looking forward to the current season like no other show, so if they nail it this season like they did Season 2, it will surely move up my Ranks

Friday Night Lights is a great show. The network has promoted it horribly - as some sexy soap-opera style thing with football. I can't blame them though, since Dillon, TX seems to have the highest density of attractive people in the nation. Good list.

Oz was a great show. If I had to complain, it would be about the wheelchair guy and his commentary. J.K. Simmons was a perfect white supremacist if I ever saw one, ha.

    Season 1 = perfection

Season 2 = hard to get into at first, massively awesome payoff if you stick with it

Season 3 = back to the rhythms that made season 1 so gripping

Season 4 = haven't started this yet, but give me a few weeks & I will amend this comment

Season 5 = So good it made me cry when it was over

The Wire in general = priceless.

Probably my favorite TV show of all time. I'm re-watching them all on Netflix and they are just as good as I remember them to be. That's a rare thing in a TV show. Usually, they are worse than you remember them. Take the A-Team for example. Used to think it was such a cool show, now I can't stand to watch it. But then, I was a little kid when it came out. Tastes change.

It started out surprising me with it's blend of nostalgia for the original show mixed with its unique take on the ideas and themes of the show. After a couple of seasons though the whole "who is a cylon and who isn't" thing got to be too weird for me.
