Favorite Comic Book Movies By   [40 more lists]

List of comic book movies from good to bad. Not meant to be exhaustive, I've only included movies I've seen relatively recently (we'll just pretend Batman & Robin doesn't exist for now).

Also, not including films from graphic novels that don't feel like "comic book" movies. Road to Perdition is good, but I don't have great compulsion to rank it against superheroes.

Rank   Name Release Directed by Genre(s) Actor(s)
  1. 1
    2008
    Christopher Nolan
Drama, Thriller, Action, Action/Adventure, Crime Fiction, Superhero movie, Evil clown More
Aaron Eckhart, Gene Fojtik, Christian Bale, Edison Chen, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Michael Jai White, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Ron Dean, Cillian Murphy, Chin Han, Nestor Carbonell, Eric Roberts, Ritchie Coster, Anthony Michael Hall, Keith Szarabajka, Colin McFarlane, Joshua Harto, Melinda McGraw, Nathan Gamble, William Fichtner More
Superheroes at their best can be used as modern mythology. Dark Knight utilizes this almost perfectly to tell a story that is at once timeless and timely.
  2. 2
    2009
    Zack Snyder
Drama, Mystery, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure, Crime Fiction, Superhero movie, Film adaptation More
Matt Frewer, Patrick Wilson, Carrie Genzel, Darryl Scheelar, Jerry Wasserman, Apollonia Vanova, Frank Novak, Ron Fassler, J.R. Killigrew, Steven Stojkovic, Walter Addison, Rob LaBelle, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Carla Gugino, Stephen McHattie, Laura Mennell, Gary Houston, James M. Connor, Mary Ann Burger, John Shaw, Robert Wisden, Don Thompson, Danny Woodburn, Dan Payne, Glenn Ennis, Greg Travis, Salli Saffioti, Brett Stimely, Leah Gibson, John Kobylka, Martin Reiss, Stephanie Belding, Clint Carleton, Niall Matter More
Not a perfect adaptation, but still not unsuccessful, and considering how far above other comic book movies Watchmen is in sophistication, that's still good enough for #2.
  3. 3
    2005
    Christopher Nolan
Drama, Crime, Thriller, Action, Action/Adventure, Superhero movie, Reboot More
Tom Wilkinson, Gerard Murphy, Christine Adams, Gus Lewis, Mark Boone Junior, Christian Bale, Richard Brake, Rutger Hauer, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Ilyssa Fradin, Rade Serbedzija, Roger Yuan, Sara Stewart, Karen David, Ken Watanabe, Linus Roache, Emma Lockhart, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Cillian Murphy, Colin McFarlane More
Really not on the same level as Dark Knight, this is still a film where in the end it comes down to a fight scene. Lucky for me, that obviously doesn't bother me too terribly much. Very solid movie that did deal with some big issues, performed the classic re-booting I didn't realize could be done.
  4. 4
    2003
    Bryan Singer
Fantasy, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure
Hugh Jackman, Brian Cox, Anna Paquin, Shawn Ashmore, Alan Cumming, Kea Wong, Kelly Hu, Ian McKellen, Aaron Stanford, Shauna Kain, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Daniel Cudmore, Rebecca Romijn, Bruce Davison, James Marsden, Katie Stuart, Famke Janssen More
X2 continue the trend of making excellent decisions on how to use the roster of characters in the X-Men Universe. Plus it tightened up the story telling a bit, and reached into societal issues more throughly and with more grace than the first movie.
  5. 5
    2000
    Bryan Singer
    Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure
Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Sumela Kay, James Marsden, Ray Park, Bruce Davison, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, Rebecca Romijn, Daryl Karolat, Anna Paquin More
This was, for me, the beginning of the good times for comic books in Hollywood. Every major decision the filmmakers made, the chose right. The Xavier/Magneto relationship is introduced well. Wolverine's intensity is capture. Additionall, the choice of Rogue as entry point for viewing of the mutants was spot on.
  6. 6
    2006
    James McTeigue
Drama, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure, LGBT, Superhero movie, Film adaptation, Dystopia, Political thriller, Future noir More
Stephen Rea, Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, Roger Allam, Tim Pigott-Smith, Sinéad Cusack, Rupert Graves, Guy Henry, John Standing, Natasha Wightman, Natalie Portman, John Hurt, Stephen Fry, Hugo Weaving, Ben Miles More
I always feel like I should like this more than I do. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but it just feels too loose to me. V just doesn't feel real enough. I do appreciate though the attempt to get strongly political.
  7. 7
    2008
    Jon Favreau
Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure, Superhero movie, War More
Gwyneth Paltrow, Will Lyman, Clark Gregg, Shaun Toub, Paul Bettany, Bill Smitrovich, Gerard Sanders, Jon Favreau, Leslie Bibb, Terrence Howard, Robert Downey Jr., Faran Tahir, Tim Guinee, Stan Lee, Jeff Bridges, Sayed Badreya, Samuel L. Jackson, James Cramer, Nazanin Boniadi More
Excellent choices made in terms of showing the development of the character, and the casting and performance by Downey were absolutely perfect. On the other hand, the actual conflict of the story is a complete cliche.
  8. 8
    2004
    Guillermo del Toro
Fantasy, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Adventure, Action/Adventure, Supernatural More
Karel Roden, Brian Steele, James Babson, Kevin Trainor, John Hurt, Bridget Hodson, Rupert Evans, Corey Johnson, Brian Caspe, Guillermo del Toro, Jeffrey Tambor, David Hyde Pierce, Selma Blair, Ladislav Beran, Ron Perlman, Doug Jones More
I'll summarize both Hellboy movies here. Not the most ambitious in terms of intellect, but what they focus on they do well. Del Toro makes beautiful movies, and Ron Perlman is a lot of fun.
  9. 9
    2008
    Guillermo del Toro
Comedy, Fantasy, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Adventure, Action/Adventure, Supernatural, Superhero movie More
Andrew Hefler, Seth MacFarlane, John Alexander, Guillermo del Toro, Ron Perlman, Doug Jones, Mike Kelly, Selma Blair, Luke Goss, John Hurt, Roy Dotrice, Jeffrey Tambor, Anna Walton, Iván Kamarás More
  10. 10
    2005
    Francis Lawrence
    Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Action, Horror
Jose Zuniga, Gavin Rossdale, Michelle Monaghan, Max Baker, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Matthew McGrory, Nicholas Downs, Suzanne Whang, Rachel Weisz, April Grace, Tilda Swinton, Jesse Ramirez, Shia LaBeouf, Keanu Reeves, Peter Stormare, Francis Guinan, Djimon Hounsou, Larry Cedar, Laz Alonso More
This movie has gotten some scathing criticism for its deviation from its source material, Hellblazer, and its not entirely undeserved. On the other hand, taken as its own work, its still pretty good.
  11. 11
    2006
    Brett Ratner
Fantasy, Thriller, Science Fiction, Action, Action/Adventure
Eric Dane, Omahyra Mota, Bill Duke, Halle Berry, Michael Murphy, Ian McKellen, Ellen Page, Olivia Williams, Rebecca Romijn, Daniel Cudmore, Ken Leung, James Marsden, Kea Wong, Vinnie Jones, Haley Ramm, Aaron Stanford, Ben Foster, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, Kelsey Grammer, Shawn Ashmore, Dania Ramirez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Cameron Bright, Shauna Kain, R. Lee Ermey More
I feel the need to keep saying that these lower rankers aren't bad movies. Obviously, I'm a fan of this genre else I wouldn't be making the list, and so most of these movies I'm going to like. The 3rd X-Men movie had some really great parts, but on the whole, the great decision making of the first two movies went out the window. No longer do the filmmakers pluck out juicy bits to sculpt a coherent movie, now they throw absolutely everything in one movie creating a mess.
  12. 12
    2003
    Ang Lee
Science Fiction, Action, Adventure, Action/Adventure, Superhero movie
Josh Lucas, Sam Elliott, Mike Erwin, Daniel Dae Kim, Nick Nolte, Michael Papajohn, Jennifer Connelly, Stan Lee, Eric Bana, Kevin Rankin, Cara Buono, Lou Ferrigno, Celia Weston, Paul Kersey More
Ang Lee's Hulk just never came to life for me. He's clearly a great filmmaker, and he was trying for more than a popcorn flick. But in the end, I didn't really take away anything from this.
  13. 13
    2002
    Sam Raimi
Fantasy, Action, Adventure, Action/Adventure, Superhero movie, Coming of age More
Jack Betts, Joe Manganiello, Gerry Becker, Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Bill Nunn, Randy Savage, K. K. Dodds, Randy Poffo, Rosemary Harris, Cliff Robertson, Bruce Campbell, James Franco, Ted Raimi, Lindsay Thompson, Lucy Lawless, Stan Lee, Kirsten Dunst, Michael Papajohn, Ron Perkins, J. K. Simmons, Stanley Anderson, Elizabeth Banks More
I have to admit I don't really get the Spider-Man movies. They just aren't that compelling. But then I feel the same about the comic. Still, not a terrible movie.
  14. 14
    2007
    Mark Steven Johnson
Drama, Fantasy, Thriller, Action, Adventure, Action/Adventure, Superhero movie More
Raquel Alessi, Nicolas Cage, Donal Logue, Sam Elliott, Peter Fonda, Wes Bentley, Eva Mendes, Laurence Breuls, Matt Long, Brett Cullen More
A pretty terrible movie. Saw this semi-accidentally when it came on television. Just seems like one of those movies that got picked apart by the process until nothing coherent remained. I'm amazed this was actually a hit.
