The Judeo-Christian God is an epic troll. If you grew up Catholic, Protestant or at all Christian, then most of these iterations of this meme will hit home hard. These are all questions we've asked ourselves, our pastors and our parents that can be answered with the fact that the Judeo-Christian God, as a character, is a mean, troll-like, hypocritical butt-face. Enjoy the best of the "Advice God" meme, just in time for the holiday season.

The particular jerseys total will not seem also distinctive from the particular jerseys given by Reebok the past ten years. Nonetheless, are going to manufactured from several diverse substance and definately will use a diverse sense from your jerseys with the previous a decade. Possibly considering that the Steelers carry out employ a standard seem making use of their outfits there was clearly you should not select several, when virtually any, adjustments inside the graphic type, no key adjustments have been predicted.

'ello. Agnostic Atheist here... I was a christian who became an agnostic atheist a couple of years ago so I am pretty educated in both fields. I study philosophy in College now. These would be funny for me, if most of these weren't based on misconceptions. Some compare the bible's statements, with those of the catholic church and display contradictions between the two(eg. Aids is killing...No condoms). Some ignore motives that the bible explained god would have (Jews are my chosen people...lol holocaust; Read the end of Leviticus). And some are golden, like the one about the logical fallacy involved in the adam and eve story (decision involving right and wrong, when not having the knowledge of right and wrong). All in all, don't laugh ignorantly to most of these because you are displaying your ignorance in the topic. There are plenty of contradictions in the bible, but most of these just reveal how little people know about them. If you're bashing on this "god", then don't bash customs created by an already established, corrupted church...

I don't have much to say only a few things I do believe in something do I care to express it to every1, not really because you don't matter anyway. It does not say in the bible you cannot kill anyone it says murder there is a big difference and that being murder is done out of a need that is not necessary where as killing someone is more from self defense of yourself or family. People negate this law buy tricking unsuspecting people with lower than average iq to commit murder for them buy deceiving those people and making them hate the victim. that is evil-live working it's MAGIC to gain asscention buy negation . Words are very powerful more than most people will ever understand, that's why if you have not got anything good to say you should not say it unless it's absolute truth otherwise anything you say can and will be used against you and most of the time it's from those closet to you trying to gain a free ride to paradise on the coat tails of the obvious angels, be careful of the questions people ask you especially friends and ask yourself why would they be asking that question if it sounds out of place beware and open your eyes a little might help you out, secondly it says in the bible be very wary of who you call the fool it is a big no no considering the only person who has a right to call themselves a fool are themselves not others an opinion is an opinion that is all that it is ,to call someone a fool based on an opinion alone may very well be a more foolish action than the person who had the balls to express a thought and opinion , where as abusing that person buy calling them something derogatory may vey well be more damaging to ones self in the long run. There ya go 1 for each side everything = , last but not least people's give up stressing about absolute crap actually give up stressing about most things, it is people's WORRIES(curses) that cause everything to happen not just good but bad as well, bad more often than not buy your family and friends because as much as they want the best for you the are always the ones who think the worst and compound your problems , be happy everyone there is no such thing as good and bad , good=love and bad=hate , hence it's a love hate relationship, all is good in love and war. Funny how evil spelt backwards is live , and god spelt backwards is dog , devil- lived very amusing might be a clue ..? I will admit this the bible does put a lot of constraints on people there for making them constantly WORRY(curse) themselves and others buy constantly worrying(cursing) on the pretense that they are doing good buy other people worrying(cursing) for them where as the inherently good people are actually doing more harm than the evil-live people who don't worry there for don't curse , a perfect system to use good to destroy good couldn't think of a better or more lazy way to do it , the Jews are not gods chosen people they are just very smart at gaining acention but negation to a place they have no RIGHT to be.

I hate it. This post/s might be from an atheist or non-christian. Whoever you are. You're free to say whatever you want against something. Anyone does. So, let me tell this. You're not using your brain. Very Funny post,.. So foolish of you. ^_^ I wish you wouldn't spare a repentance. I hate it though most of you loved it. No worries. Let my/our God do His work. Ooopss. No one will try to disgrace my belief. I have my own. We have our own like what you have yours. ^_^ If you had the privilege to say bad things with my Deity, well.. I have the privilege to say I hate that post. What a foolish act without noticing that it is a part of your dumb actions. Such immoral. ^_^ How pitiful. Doesn't know how to respect the belief of others. =)))

You believe what you believe only because you were told what to believe because of where you were born. If you were born in India, you would likely be a Hindu... if you were born in Yemen, you would most likely be a Muslim. We've come a long way in 2000 years, and granted, we have much further to go... but don't be stuck believing a story that a bunch of ancient, uninformed, silly politicians carefully compiled nearly 2000 years ago in order to secure their influence.

Most atheists / agnostics think this is hilarious because, after reading the bible and other religious texts, they are well-versed in the huge amount of contradictions in religion.

Most believers think this is stupid / insulting / juvenile / inaccurate because they have a strong sense-of-identity built into their faith, so their brains instinctively dislike anything that challenges these foundational beliefs. Also, they probably haven't read the bible.

this is why i dont call myself an athiest--i dont want to be lumped in with this guy. when people ask what my religious views are, i reply that i am simply not religious. i have no problems with religion, as it is essentially a force of good, advising people not to steal, kill, whatever. thats great. just keep it to yourself, please. the same goes to people like this guy -- please stop considering yourselves superior, and L2tolerate.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 11/28/2011 4:29 PM
I don't see death as a punishment. It's the finish line. When death comes, I get to go to sleep and stop worrying about life. Sorry, I know this reply is a little late, but I just wanted to add another perspective on the matter of death.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 9/14/2011 5:00 AM
Actually, according to your argument, religious people and Christians in particular are even worse because they see eternal misery in Hell after death as an appropriate punishment for anyone who doesn't believe in their dogmatic, outdated and frankly ridiculous beliefs. You're disgusting AND an idiot.
1. Amanda
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 10/09/2011 7:45 PM
Well, actually, to an atheist death would (presumably) be the ultimate punishment, since there is no life after death, and is therefore equivalent to hell for a religious person. So, to me, people that feel like the OP and a tyrannical preacher are EQUALLY the 'worst people' by wishing the worst on those who do not agree with them. I could be wrong, here, but I still think any sort of wishing of pain on anyone, no matter what you believe, is vile, primitive, and crippling to a better f*ture. Perhaps my initial response was indeed a bit aggressive and hypocritical, but I do not take back the statement that this particular post disgusted me.

Despite the few minority of Muslims that strictly follow Sharia Law and believe in being martyrs and killing for their religion, most Muslims around the world typically tend to be much kinder and compassionate than Christians, even many atheists. Ever met one? Don't follow mainstream media.

There are two problems in this whole discussion. One: You lot have no f**king idea what you're talking about. You have TEXTS and THEORIES. Anyone have personal experience? Seen God? Denied his existence in person? Been there for the Big Bang? Didn't think so. Stop being f**king smartasses and laugh at the f**king memes.

Two: Some people stated, if you don't believe in God, you go to Hell. Do you realize you condemn everyone who doesn't share your opinion? What about the Muslims? The Hindi? The Buddhists? Taoists? Jews? They deserve an eternity of burning in hell, damnation and eternal pain because they don't share your beliefs? YOU DISGUST ME.

Because when somebody does something wrong, you set an example by showing them how to do it right. While I agree that a very large number of Christians condemn others for their beliefs, not all of them do, and even if they did, so do others. If you don't like that "Damn everyone who has a different opinion!" mentality, show them that you can be more mature than that. Show them the "to each their own" mind set. Eventually, they might learn to do the same.

You know, this entire series of "facts" is fallaciously used to propagate a straw man argument. It's an attempt to string together disparate and superficial facts in an attempt to make the Christian position sound ridiculous. If you want to analyze someone's proposition, you can't ignore the methodology they use to justify that proposition. For every single graphic here, there is a justifiable methodology in the Bible or in very simple theology, that can repudiate what this post sophmorically tries to do. We should all be able to acknowledge that Christianity, a religion and way of life, that a third of the world adheres to, deserves to be, in the very least, treated seriously. Take some time to learn about what you criticize. It may change your mind and it may change your life.

Wow you tried very hard to sound smart, didn't you? It is a joke but I still don't see the straw man arguments, please point them out. Everything that was said points out the illogical thinking of the religious. Sure you can rationalize anything if you try hard enough but that does not make it logical. "that a third of the world adheres to", can you say argumentum ad populum? If a third of the world believed in pink unicorns should we treat them seriously? Many atheists know exactly what they are criticizing. Myself for example was a christian for 23 years.

Actually, this "entire series of facts" is, in fact, being used to propagate "jokes". This is something a lot of people don't understand when it comes to making fun of religions. A wise man once said "Take some time to learn about what you criticize. It may change your mind and it may change your life." I would take that advice.

Christians to this day are polytheists. They all worship demi-gods, or Saints, as they call them. In Italy, Jesus is definitely not the first deity to be prayed to in time of need, nor God. Hilariously, they are pretty far down on the list. If you think this is false, it is stated by a priest of the Vatican in the film, "Religulous."

Big misconception. We don't WORSHIP Saints. We simply acknowledge their existence and pray to them for help as they have the ability to speak with God. Essentially, we pray to them to pray for us. That's basically it. Get your facts straight.

wor·ship /ˈwɜrʃɪp/ Show Spelled [wur-ship] Show IPA noun, verb, -shiped, -ship·ing or (especially British) -shipped, -ship·ping.

noun

1. reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred.

2. formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage: "They attended worship this morning."

3. adoring reverence or regard: excessive worship of business success.

verb (used with object)

6. to render religious reverence and homage to.

7. to feel an adoring reverence or regard for (any person or thing).

verb (used without object)

8. to render religious reverence and homage, as to a deity.

9. to attend services of divine worship.

10. to feel an adoring reverence or regard.

I have my facts straight. Praying to anything; saint or God, is "to render religious reverence and homage, as to a deity." Recognition of saints as "divine" is WORSHIP. Feeling adoration of say, Saint Nicholas; is WORSHIP. To pray to them to pray for you is to show WORSHIP. Know matter how you rationalize it, you all WORSHIP saints. That's basically it according to the definition of the word. "Get your facts straight."

Okay, what distinguishes saints from god than? You pray to saints, you pray to Mary, you go to priests for confession when part of the reason Jesus came was for people to have a direct connection with god and not have to go through man, you where pendants with saints, you hang crucifixes and depict Jesus still hanging on the cross, etc. What exactly do you do differently when worshiping god that you do not do for saints or man?

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 7/10/2011 1:17 PM
Saints do not have the power that God does. And the whole "Jesus came for people to have a direct connection with God and not have to go through man..." is more of a Lutheran belief. Hence the Pope being such a major figurehead amongst Catholics. Jesus on the Cross is a symbol of his sacrifice, a reminder of what God put him through to pay for our sins. Personally, being raised Catholic but having Lutheran relatives, I've gotten a good perspective of the differences. I honestly prefer the Lutheran perspective where we don't necessarily need a Priest or Pastor to tell us forgiven. I think anyone (ordained or not) can have a legitimate connect with God. I've had one. But what it comes down to is...the saints are connection to God, a way to channel our prayers. (Honestly, it seems silly, but it helps, I think.)

But I guess for clarification, a priest gives us guidance. I mean, how many times have you actually physically HEARD God tell you something? I doesn't communicate straightforward, so when we go to confession, we're relieving the burden of sin, getting reassurance from someone we look up to that He has forgiven us (because we as Man rarely feel as if we deserve His forgiveness). It helps to have physical evidence.

That, and it helps to have someone that's studied His Word to interpret it for us, to convey the true meaning (or what the Priest claims it to be...I have my doubts about their interpretations sometimes...).

Does that help? I've just kinda been rambling...not sure if I really answered your question or not...

The Holy Trinity is not 3 separate Gods, like Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. They are three names for the same entity that embody three forms. One entity is depicted awesomely in these memes. The other is his "son" (for lack of a better term) that walked on Earth. You may know him as Jesus. The third is the seen as a white dove and known as The Holy Spirit. (btw, the Holy Spirit is NOT a white dove. That is simply symbolic of the Holy Spirit.)

Good try, but not quite. Depending on which region of India you are in can determine which of the gods you worship more than the others. In Hinduism, all Gods and Deities are recognized and acknowledged, but they each bring different elements to the table. God/Jesus/Holy Spirit are all of the same essence, whereas the gods of modern Hinduism include the chief gods Shiva, Vishnu and the Mother Goddess Shakti as well as a myriad of local community gods.

He believed that he was the son of God which he was. so he took judaism and preached his own word of God that later became known as christianity.

Shouldn't someone have to prove that something actually exists first? I'm only saying this as someone who was christian for 14 years and recently became... well nothing actually (Not atheist or anything). Maybe I'm wrong and it turns out that there is a God, who knows, but like I mentioned earlier; it would make more sense for something to be proven than for it to be dis-proven.

You are correct, Brienzi. The position that it is reasonable to believe in the existence of God until someone proves that he doesn't exist would open the believer up to believing in every other deity or fanciful creature that ever crawled out of someone's imagination. The appropriate response is to say that you will prove God doesn't exist as soon as they prove leprechauns do not exist.

Hey, iiii, how do YOU claim to know Jesus' intent? You weren't there and, yes, neither were Yupp or his cohorts; but how can you claim that those two (highly educated) individuals have no idea what happened and in the same statement claim that you do? And if it's the word of the Bible you're following than please consider the following: Christianity did not start until after Jesus died; Jesus was a Jew not a Christian and the Bible was written by men that are fallable, corruptable, and out to survive in a world were answers and wealth are the only way to do so comfortably. Just like you, my friend, these men heard stories and they cherry-picked the ones that helped in their agenda. The stories they heard were the Bible, but all those stories already existed in some other religion.

Also, the men who wrote the Bible had to control masses of unintelligible, hungry, hostile and deviant people. How do you do that? You create some sort of construct with rules that condemn you to a place of either divinity or torture depending on how you choose to live, i.e. the Bible. Not just the Bible, but any religious text that offers random moral code and punishment for not following it.

Another point for both sides of the coin: Jesus has never been proven to have existed. Argue about him all you want but you're arguing about a man who might not have ever even walked the Earth.

Of course these point to a plethora of fallacies held by religion. That's obvious to the objective mind. You won't convince a religious person that, though. They will always have an imaginative explanation for anything you use against them (hence blind faith)

Facts to address:

Yes. There are a lot of Christians who are dicks. Doesn't make them right, but it doesn't make the Bible any less true.

There are Christians out there who are actually quite accepting. (Shocking! I know!)

Humanity is full of assholes on both sides. I know a s**t load of atheists who are total douchebags and a bunch of "Christians" who are the same way.

Just because someone says they're Christian, doesn't make it so. You actually have to make some sort of an effort.

And lastly, there's a lot of people out there that talk about how much "God" hates gay people, or "God" hates muslims. But really, God doesn't hate anyone. He gave us free will to do as we please and while it makes Him sad to see people walking down undesirable life paths, he's not the cause. There's a very real God out there but there's also a very real Devil. Who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. God admires and rejoices in so much of humanity, and the only thing giving him a bad rap is humanity itself.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/24/2011 8:07 AM
First, the Bible has many fallacies in it so it doesn't need Christians being dicks to make it less true. Second, God created everything (If you believe in Him, of course) so it stands to reason that he created homosexuals and Muslims with the ability to be as they are, but why? Especially if he thinks they are "walking down undesirable life paths," If it's undesirable than why create people that way or with the ability to be that way? Third, the Devil doesn't reign over Hell, he was banished there to suffer, just like any other sinner that supposedly goes there in death. To assume the Devil has any powers from within that domain, such as, the ability to cause people to sin, is ridiculous because God is all powerful. His restraint on Lucifer, I would imagine, would go far enough to restrict the demon from having any influence. Fourth, the picture everyone has in their minds comes from Dante Aligheiri's Inferno, not the Bible. Don't believe me, well I'm an agnostic so I had to do the research so I could decide for myself what to believe. Blind faith is someone telling you something with no evidence and expecting you to believe it. The Bible gives no evidence so it is foolish to just say that the men who wrote it knew what they were talking about.
1. yeah
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/24/2011 11:39 PM
the bible gives no evidence to what? the devil in the bible is seen simply as the tempter. he is on God's court and God uses him to tempt His people. i agree that the image of the devil does not come from the bible.

why is there such a problem understanding free will. No s**t God wants you to use free will His way, but God is selfless in the way he didnt put any limitations on what people can be or believe. He could have us all be the same and obey him and follow him but He wants each of us to enjoy our life our way and for those who dont use free will his way will have consequences later on, but they have the choice to be Muslim or gay without restriction.
1. kylemr87
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/25/2011 11:08 AM
So your point is that God gives free will; the ability to make decisions and figure things out on our own with no limitations. We are free to kill, rape, pillage, steal, etc. But if we do any of those things we are banished to Hell to be tortured alongside the supposed "Tempter." However, if we followed the vague, generalized rules outlined in a book written by fallable men that has been changed and mistranslated for hundreds of years we will be allowed to walk through the gates of a paradise in the sky, or our minds, or some alternate dimension, or some grand place I can't even imagine?

And I have to ask; if I was given the role of the slayer of Lucifer, or whatever, and I actually perform this task and kill Lucifer; would I be condemned to Hell for murder?

Where is the lines with His rules? "I give you the oppurtunity to be straight and Catholic, but if you choose bisexuality and Scientology you're screwed." That doesn't sound really appealing as a religion I want to follow.

And the jealousy. God is so jealous, or proud (both sins) that he seeks to destroy Job's life because what? Oh yea, Lucifer told Him that he could get Job to denounce His "divine" presence. That's the act of someone mad with power, a megalomaniac; no more holy than His counterpart. If our lives can be a game to Him than why would I take His rule seriously?

One last thing, why is the story of Noah and the flood found in Sumerian myths dated far older than the Bible and the time period it proposes for the flood to have occurred. Probably because the men whom invented the religion were lacking creativity and needed old myths to spice things up. How do you put fear of divine retribution for sin into the hearts of millions? You could probably assemble a book of tales about how when doing things that are immoral you must remember that there is some unseen entity that is keeping tally all the bad things you do. And when you finally die this entity will decide if you're "pure" or if you should be punished for eternity (Far longer than your lifetime and anytime you spent commiting sin).

None of it can be proven. You say, "Why question it?", I say, "Why worry about it?" There will always be a way to question the rationalities people have for existence; for instance, if God is real, what created Him? What gave Him power? What gives Him the right to orchestrate how we live? On the other side; What caused the "Big Bang?" How do scientists explain conscious thought, beyond chemical reactions? Why do we have the capacity for love or hate or any other emotion? How does science explain the psyche? Because nothing is an exact explanation, we will most likely never know.

I'm going to give you a bit of the education "uhhh dudee" and the rest of us think you need. First of all, just because you can't go 2 hours without slammin' down SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS doesn't mean somebody else can't! And not every Christian faith serves wine during communion. Especially not the Mormons! And you're a f**king moron if you think that God really wants us to eat His Body and drink His Blood. It's called symbolism. (Or Symbology if you're a Boondock Saints fan)

As for your whole "why the hell is pot illegal? god created it !"........Ever heard of something called "the separation of Church and State"? And I personally love how you can claim to go alllll f**king day while saying something as flimsy (and self-contradictory) as "why dont mormons drink,,, adam n eve probly got f**king hammered off those old fruits".........Seriously? "probly"? Yeah, that'll stick. That's like saying, "Hitler probly didn't even apply to art school!"

This is going to be a fairly long rant. I am tired of Christians not understanding why someone can't believe in God. Well here are a couple of answers. First, you get mad when someone dismisses your religion while you dismiss all the current and previous religions without a thought, think about that for a minute. Second, logically based on current evidence of the universe all creation stories are false meaning all religions are wrong. Lastly, humans are the most pompous creatures in existence. To think that the universe was created specifically for humanity when we are smaller that a grain of dust and have only been around for less than a blink of an eye in comparison to the age and size of the universe.

I think humans desire and require something to believe in. BUT, humans also need something to control people, the masses. Government can't always control it's pop**ation because the people know that the government is run by other people. So what do you do? Make a government much scarier and much more powerful than anyone can ever imagine. And the consequences? Oh no, you don't get sent to jail for a couple of years. You burn for eternity. I can respect other religions, but I refuse to be part of a community that hopes for the worst for the other 80% of humantity.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/17/2011 2:51 PM
I think the last point may be one of the most important aspects in the development of religion; it's so hard to imagine that fundamentally our existence is meaningless and therefore so natural to find meaning in whatever way we can.

I can't recall but I believe it may have been Swinburne who suggested that a believer who does not acknowledge the possibility that they might be wrong is not showing true faith as they have not come to a judgement in which they accept the one state of affairs and reject the other.

I can appreciate that - having come to that conclusion - a believer may have the right to have no doubts as to their faith. I have no God, but over the years I have accepted that other people do; to a greater or lesser extent we all must believe in something, even if that something is the assertion that there exists nothing other than the physical world and the human entity.

As a Christian, I can understand your point as well. Having developed an interest in a variety of cultures and religions, I can appreciate the interconnectedness of it all. But at the same time, I find it very hard to imagine life without any sort of belief in a higher being, whether it's God or another deity.

Hate to rain on your parade but if you consider any other religion to have merit, other than what you claim to believe in, you are an agnostic. So if other cultures and religions make sense to you than you can't be Christian.

I agree, however, I AM an agnostic. I don't have any special answer to why we are here or what/who created us, but to assume that everything happened by accident is foolish, there may be no meaning to it but it couldn't have been random. How did that car start without someone turning the key? Atheists would assume it was nothing; an accident, religious zealots would tell you some grand story about an unseen entity and its propensity for good and evil. But its as simple as someone turned the key. There probably is some divination to our creation but no rhyme or reason. That could explain why religious people feel a "presence" of something but atheists can point out the absence of a true "God." Whatever caused the Big Bang was more divine than anything on Earth but is no longer around and is certainly not looking over our shoulders expecting us to do good amidst all the bad that was also created. I'm ranting now so I'll end it here.

you dont see them? i do.

you know how angels are portrayed by being surrounded in glowing white light. thats what i mean. i dont mean that you can hit a switch and turn on an angel when you need to. replace the word light with just angels. "God said 'Let there be angels.'" that might help.

you dont know me. i am not naive. i have studied the bible along with other religion's texts. we're not all mindless people following the churches, some know what we're talking about and actually believe and have faith in something. but what do i know, im just a child. however, everyone thats on here arguing is just a child because we're not gonna make any progress, no one will change the other's beliefs, especially since its about something none of us can begin to solve, know, nor understand. if i were to group all people who dont believe in my faith as arrogant and shallow, id be just like you calling all christians naive. but i know you're not a stubborn little b***h, you just have your opinion as i have mine. just please dont go categorizing, and i wont if you wont. i have firm belief that the 'unhappy ending' to my life will be the happiest most fulfilling ending i can have, that anyone can have. thank you for your time, katie.

Ummmm, or we could look at this from a logical standpoint. Or better yet, a scientifically proven one. Light comes from a spectrum of radiation that is created by many sources, none of them being angels.

"Examples include sunlight (the radiation emitted by the chromosphere of the Sun at around 6,000 Kelvin peaks in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum when plotted in wavelength units [6] and roughly 40% of sunlight is visible"

Even humans put off light, it is just at such a low frequency that it has to be viewed through a device other than the human eye. X-rays are light and that's why we can create images with them.

God said let there be light (According to the Bible, nothing else existed yet, so I guess he said that to Himself) but it seems foolish for him not to also inform whomever he was talking to of the complexity of light and how extensive knowledge of it can be useful to survive through some diseases and other anomallies to effectually allow people to do "good" for a longer period of time.

You have your beliefs and I have mine, that is a good thing to stand by, but if you are going to pick at someone's beliefs you should do some research first. Angels can't be light because we've already eliminated that scenario with science.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/24/2011 11:47 PM
if humans give off light themselves, why cant angels? like child said in his first post, sun isnt the only source of light therefore when God said let there be light, maybe he allowed everything to give off light, like angels because they were the only ones there then as he made other things like the sun and humans, they gave off light. plus he never said he believed that one, he just said that the source of light is not the sun and that he wasnt sure what God exactly meant by light. before you go picking at his beliefs you should read into what he said fully and not just one theory that he suggested that he never confirmed that he believed in.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/25/2011 11:25 AM
He also said, "replace the word light with just angels. "God said 'Let there be angels.'" that might help." This implies that when God said, "Let there be angels." He was stating that light is angels? Or angels are light? Either way OUR light doesn't come from angels. OUR light doesn't even come from us, the light that comes from us exhibits as temperature. Visible light comes from the sun or more expansively the all visible light comes from the billions of stars that exist.

Don't get me wrong, angels may exist, God may exist, I have no idea. But I do know that unless angels are highly radioactive, than they probably aren't a source of any substantial light.

Also, I did read what he said fully, "we're not all mindless people following the churches, some know what we're talking about", when I read this, I'm sorry, I thought he meant he knew what he was talking about.

In the Bible, if you pay any attention at all, you will realize that when God said, "Let there be light" (In the Vulgate it is literally 'Fiat lux' or 'Let light become') he was not creating the sun and moon, he was bringing the light of his presence to a world which was 'waste and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep'. Note: I am a Pagan, not Christian (never have been christian, wasn't raised in the church at all), but it sometimes pays to be educated in multiple religious theories. It's not nice to be disrespectful of another's views simply because they don't work well with your own. As Child said, we are all entitled to our own opinions. Sometimes we simply have to agree to disagree!

(I am not religious) However, it would be naive of me to say that they didn't argue and speak in a more respectful manner than the others. If you really want your opinion to be taken seriously you should try being a little more mindful of what you say... In response to aradiasongbird and child, if god truly does exist and the bible is correct then could you explain the existence of the Egyptian gods and their prophet. He predates the beginning of the bible and has exactly the same story as the christian prophets. Same number of disciples, same stories of turning water to wine etc... Food for thought...

Actually, studies show that Atheists know a lot more about the bible than Christians. The Christians read what they want to believe and the Atheists read everything. You can't just pick and choose what you want to follow. It's like picking and choosing which laws to follow in society. During the time the Bible was written, people believed the Earth was flat. People believed the Earth was only a few thousand years old. People believed in sea monsters. Also, the Bible says that you won't get in to heaven if you believe in God "just in case." All religion has done is destroy people's lives. I refuse to be a part of a community that wishes the worst (burning in hell for eternity) for the rest of the 80% of humanity. All religion tells me is that you need a book and some guy in the sky to tell you what's right and wrong and that you can't determine it for yourself. Some God he is. "Believe in me or you suffer the consequences." That's right. Sounds like religion to me.

Yes, the understandings are far beyond our own capacity; this is what the second half of the Bible is about. Jesus came because we could not live up to these expectations. God set the expectations high because that is what life is supposed to be like and Jesus came to save us from not living up to perfect expectations. I am a Christian, and I state that the Christians who are judging are doing it wrong. I admit that many Christians are doing Christianity wrong, but do not let them deter you from Christianity. I am a Christian who does his very best to accept all people and be kind to everyone, this is what Christianity is supposed to be about. Do not base Christianity off of looking at Christians who are doing it wrong, please.

Interesting scenario, bella, I like it. Is it so hard for Christians to believe that they are in control of their own lives? I mean, I'm not Atheist, but I'm certainly not religious. I believe that you're supposed to do good because it's the right thing to do. Doing bad things or things that are "sins", you really are just slowing the progression of civilization because you're forcing to many people to have to deal with your "sin." However, starting wars and condemning people because of thousand year old beliefs and parcels of land that are really useless in the scheme of things drastically slows human progression. How can we better ourselves if we're all arguing about some dude in the sky? It really worries me that most of the people in charge of the world are religious zealots that can't say worth a damn whether or not what they believe is true.

Okay, explain to me why the story of Noah and many of the other stories in the Bible existed far before it was written or the time period it claims these events occurred?

The story of Jesus is completely ripped off from the story of Osiris

If you except that God spoke to Moses than why not John Smith?

I'm Agnostic, I can see from both sides of the coin. God may exist, Jesus may have existed, but I have been waiting, since childhood, for someone to make even the slightest bit of sense out of the Bible. Even if God exists, it can't be accepted that the men who wrote it are not God. They are fallable; corruptable and easily swayed by sin. It stands to reason that even if God told them what to write, the pen was in their hands, not His. They could change the stories, not fully understand what they are writing, misinterpret, etc. There are so many mistakes that could have occurred and if you think is has been untouched since its beginning, you're a fool. Even today, in order to maintain old documents we need advanced technology. From a logical standpoint, it should be assumed that with oral passing of these tales, until they were written down and the hundreds of years since that they have been tainted or changed in some way or another, as well as, taken from older religions that pre-date Catholicism.

Why the events occurred before it was written down? I don't know. Ask God when you see Him. It takes faith to believe God inspired Moses to write these stories after they occurred, much like it takes faith for your body to work each day or the faith it takes in the grocery store to not poison your food.

Jesus and story have nothing in common. I bet you got that idea from 'Zeitgeist'. Please see this link and read everything: http://conspiracies.skepticproject.com/articles/zeitgeist/part-one/

Also, we have over 5600 manuscripts of the New Testament alone, the earliest coming under 100 years after Jesus lived. The manuscripts over the hundreds and thousands of years match in interpretation and word.

How many other ancient writings can you say that about? None. The next in line is Homer's 'Iliad', which only has 640-ish manuscripts, the earliest coming at least 500 years after he lived. No original. And Plato's 'Republic'? We got the first of only seven manuscripts about 1,000 years after he was around.

To discount the reliability of Scripture means you have to discount the writings of so many ancient philosophers and writers colleges and people have come to love. See here: http://carm.org/manuscript-evidence

I said it before, if a car starts it's not because it was random of scientifically supposed to happen because of the right conditions in space, as Atheists would assume. It's also not because some grand entity willed it into existence, already started, as religious people would assume. The real answer is something IN BETWEEN, someone turned a key and the car started. This someone is neither "random", nor are they a grand entity.

There are exactly an infinite amount of possibilities as to why we are here or what created the universe, earth, or people.

I have a question that i am hoping could be answered by any Judeo- Christian.. Where was Cain forced to go after he killed his brother Abel? The Bible states that Adam and Eve were the only two on the planet. They then had two sons, Cain and Abel. The Bible clearly states that these were the only four people on the globe. After Cain kills Abel, God gave him a mark, AND CAIN WENT TO THE LAND OF NOD AND MET HIS WIFE!!! What? Where did this town and all of these people just come from? There was supposed to be no one else on the globe!!! How do you expect people to believe this farce? It sounds too fairytale to me.. Please enlighten us.. By the way, all of this can be found in Genesis 4, 16.. Feel free to check it out yourselves. Thanks for reading.

I once asked a similar question to the man who use to preach at a church i use to attend. I asked him why the names of parents weren't included in the text.. his response was that:"it wasn't necessary. If i told you a story about how My name is Cheyenne and I went to the grocery store today...i wouldn't include the names of my parents if i wrote a story about my trip to the store". his response made sense. although i am a believer i still find the bible hard to grasp at times. but i've always believed that it is much better to question it than to follow it blindly. i hope my answer was of some help to you.

Starfish, the Bible states in genesis 5 that the purpose of the book is the generations of Adam. It states that Adam lived for 930 years, in that time a man may have had more children. Including daughters. It would take pages and pages, and pages to explain just how exactly it may have went down. It could be understandable why the ancient authors never included every last person that was born. It only included the first 3 sons. But never mentioned daughters. Infact if you continue reading down the tree it really doesn't mention any daughters. Men was seen as more important in that time. So one theory is that Cain knew his wife who may have also been his sister. It just wasn't believed to be important to mention that they were siblings.

All of you Atheists patting yourselves on the back for being so much "smarter" than Christians: What is wrong with you? Saying that you are certain that there is no god is just as ludicrous as saying that you are certain that there is a God. You feel that belief in God is foolish because there is absolutely no proof of a god? That's fine; be Agnostic. However, saying that you know there is no god is merely the opposite side of the same coin as Christianity. You all look like self-righteous morons right now.

Thanks, I have been thinking the same thing and you wrote it better than I could've. I'm Agnostic. I believe that any scenario of our existence is possible (most make little sense) but I can't ref*te them because absolutely no one, not even the most intellgent or highly pious person on the globe has even the slightest clue as to the answer to most of our questions. Especially, "Is God real?" It would seem not because of His apparent absence, however, if anything in scripture is true than there must've been a God at one point. I have no idea, no one does. Everyone take a step down from their pedestals and have some humility.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 5/02/2011 2:07 PM
....No. I'm an atheist. So what you're saying that we think we are smarter than you for not believing in god? No, we are smarter because we are more realistic, and we side with whats been proven. For example a Christian might pray to god for a miracle whatever it may be, say I want a million dollars. The odds of your prayer being answered are probably worse then your odds at hitting mega millions. Are you really ignorant enough to think a giant invisible man in the clouds will shout a spell and poof all your problems are solved? And adam and eve? So your telling me we are all inbred? Cause I mean if Adam and Eve were the only 2 humans they f**ked each other had children then what? they made more humans out of mid-air? Nooooo. (Thats not how humans are made silly Christians) There has to be intercourse, which means...yea. Gross. So before s**tting on someone else for believing they are smarter than you, make sure you know for a fact they aren't before making a stupid point. There is no evidence of there being a god, there is evidence for there not being a god....a lot of it actually. I'd say siding with evidence and logic makes you smarter than believing in things that break ALL laws and regulations of nature and life. Not to mention 90% of world conflict has been over who's religion is right or wrong. So if you're so accepting and forgiving why did your people need to kill people and force people into their beliefs? And every religion is different with so many possibilities why do you think yours is right?

IF Christians are 100% right, wouldn't they have to force someone as narrow-minded as you to believe it? I don't think Christians are right, but you certainly are not. You may believe in a lot of science or factual information but none of that information gets you close to having an answer. I CAN say that with 100% certainty because all the correct information on the globe gets you nowhere near having an answer. All "Ughhh" was saying is that you're a self-righteous moron if you're an Atheist and actually think that you can say with any certainty that God does not exist. You can't. Go all the way back to the Big Bang with no God, who caused that bang to occurr? You say it was random, which may be, but at some point, far enough back there was some conscious planning as to how this universe would exist. Maybe not a person, but definitely some kind of thought that no self-righteous Atheist will understand. Have you heard of the "God particle", or the Akashic Field, or even the Integral Theory of Everything? All these theories are recognized by the scientific community, and all three require a designer or creator. Even science has God and they have a lot of "evidence" to support it. What's your evidence that there is no God?

Christians are most likely wrong about their beliefs, but Atheists come nowhere close to understanding what's going on. Yea, your facts about science have been proven but the existence of God has not.

Why so certain that there must be a creator at the beginning? And if there was a creator, who created the creator (and who created that creator, and so on)? And if you're answer is, the creator is eternal, why can't atheists say the universe is eternal?
1. kylemr87
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/27/2011 4:19 PM
Atheists can't say that because the universe didn't exist before the Big Bang. That Bang marks the beginning of our universe, even if you except that we sprang from a prior universe. OUR universe can't be eternal because it HAD a beginning and will reach an end when expansion breaks apart time and space.

As far as scientists know, there was nothing before the Big Bang not even the vacuum of space.

And I'm not at all sure about a creator, but neither are you even if you think you are.

There are scientific theories that allow for an eternal universe, such as a continually expanding and retracting universe. And if universes can naturally spawn other universes, then why can't atheists say, the multiverse is eternal? No need to assume that, "at some point, far enough back there was some conscious planning as to how this universe would exist."

obviously youre past the point of no return, however i think one issue many atheists have is that God isnt a man. He has no form, He is a power and a spirit. and it is our fault for calling Him "He" because thats misleading but there is no "guy in the clouds", no eyes watching you, just knowledge above us. and im sorry but until there is proof of how matter entered existence (because we all know the big bang explains nothing for how did the two large subjects of matter become. all it says is that these 2 things collided), i will believe in a higher being so i do think its fair that that is your burden of proof. i look forward to hearing it

I'm not sure, just a theory of mine, but with the Big Bang there was the presence of anti-matter. Anti-matter is the negative half to matter and when equal masses of each come in contact they cancel each other out in a violent eruption of energy. (This is all proven) My theory comes in with the Bang. I believe that a large mass of matter and a smaller mass of anti-matter collided in the vacuum of space. The mass of anti-matter could only cancel out as much matter as its own mass, so in the end there was a lot of normal matter left over. This matter scattered with the violent eruption of energy and is the universe. The initial Bang is what is causing our universe to expand.

This doesn't leave out God, however, because something or someone had to set all that in motion. Maybe it was an entity, maybe it was just a build-up of matter and anti-matter in the universe that collided. I like to think that a multitude of factors came together, even a divine presence.

No Atheist or religious zealots knows for sure, but it's nice to speculate.

What evidence is there for there not being a god? Is there really "a lot" of it? There may be evidence that the Bible is not literally true, but it's impossible for there to be evidence that there's no god of any kind. At best, there's merely a lack of evidence for there being one. If you want to claim higher intelligence, be careful about what you state as fact/absolute.

I think most Christians wouldn't say it takes faith to not believe in Santa Claus. Rather, there just isn't enough evidence to make belief in Santa Claus a reasonable proposition. This is how I, and other atheists I know, feel about God. And while you can't prove that something doesn't exist (no one can prove that Santa Claus doesn't exist), the facts are consistent with his not existing. Of course it's possible that Santa's handwriting on the to/from notes on my christmas presents was the same as my dad's, but it's much more likely that my dad was impersonating Santa. In the same way, many of the facts of Christianity make sense when you assume God doesn't exist. To take one example, why would God first reveal himself to a small group of people instead of to everyone? Imagine the global strife that could have been prevented if God hadn't initially chosen a subset of humans. But if we assume God is make-believe, then this makes perfect sense, since not every people group could possibly think up the same God. Here and in many other investigations, the evidence is consistent with God not existing.

Nuh-uh, don't pull that s**t. "You guys"? I'm on your side, man. I'm just calling you out on your claim that there's proof that there is no god of any kind. Of course the burden of proof is on those that make extraordinary claims, but that doesn't mean we can make s**t up about there being mountains of proof that there is no god of any sort. Such an undertaking is impossible, since a god doesn't even have to be on our mortal plane of existence. We'd have an easier time proving that there are no extra-terrestrial aliens in the entire universe, because at least those supposedly have to obey the natural laws, and you can imagine how difficult that would be.

Maybe we could all go to 'The Church of Agnostics'....wait a minute.... At least the people who say they are atheist have made up their mind (and that's not to say that with sufficient evidence they wouldn't change their mind). When someone says they are agnostic there are 2 possibilities 1) The person really doesn't know. 2) when the person says "saying there is no god is merely the opposite side of the same coin as Christianity" they are afraid to die. There is no proof of a monster under my bed; in fact, there is no evidence that there could possibly be one. Therefore; I don't believe in it. There is no proof of life on other planets; however, there is a good probability with the vastness of the universe that there are aliens on other planets. Therefore: I believe that there could be aliens on one of the billions of planets out there. But until there is proof I am not sure.

I just think it's idiotic to side with one extreme or the other because it's something that no one could possibly know and therefore, there will always be doubt as to which side could be right. Especially when real logic would have the true answers lie somewhere in between the extreme. If anything can be proven it's that people lives are black and white or good and bad but a blend of both ends of the spectrum.

But most importantly, I don't think He speaks any earthly language, because like I said, He's in a coma and therefore took no part of the creation of human facial caves producing hap-hazard noises that society interprets as speech. When He wakes up He's going to be so desperately confused as to why He has so many voicemails on his Godly Prayer Answering Machine(GPAM) and most likely retire and start a new universe somewhere else. :)

you're clearly not Christian because you would know that is not hypocritical in any form. everyone knows we sin, it's impossible to be flawless, all that matters is having faith in God. that's what Jesus told us. the Greatest Commandment was to love God with all your strength. then Jesus, the pure unsinnable Son of God, died for no reason that was of his faults. so why did he die? he died so that we could sin and be forgiven. we are all going to be saved no matter our faults as long as every night we say "i'm sorry for my sins, God." I would not judge you if you had relations with an underaged girl and neither would God as long as you realize what you did wrong.

this is my biggest problem with christianity. do anything wrong and just saw you're sorry for it. thats like not having a religion at all because you probably have NO MORALS if you think this way. like hmmm if i dont sin, then jesus died for nothing, right? ill go sin now! maybe ill kill someone, but ill say sorry after so it'll be justified. NO! that is the most flawed thinking. I have morals so therefore i won't do bad things (aka sin). I'm not going to pretend like doing bad stuff and then saying sorry for it is okay, because thats far from okay.

Paul addresses taking advantage of God's grace in Romans 6. When someone truly experiences God's love, they will be transformed. They will no longer embrace the sin they did before.\n\nTo see another example, google Matthew 7:21-23.\n\nIf a 'Christian' has a works theology where they can be saved by doing something in particular (like saying sorry to God), they are clearly not saved and don't understand salvation in Jesus. No one can save themselves -- that's why it's all based on grace.

I am doubtful someone will wind up reading this... however I'd like to provide a simple reason why no religion has what is happening in the universe correct: Mankind. Mankind has had something to do with every fairy tale out there, every boogeyman and every deity. The dismissal of these stories is easy once you realize the truth. We could not possibly comprehend the REASON for existence. not when there are stars that have burned for 10 billion years, not when we are some of the latest species to arrive on the planet. We give ourselves far too much credit for being able to communicate, form complex ideas and invent things. We still believe we are the center of the universe even though it is apparent there is no center, and through the lens of the universe we are indistinguishable from any other part of it. From a sub-atomic particle making up a tiny piece of a sculpture, to an entire galaxy, we can't say how large or small we are, since we can't tell if maybe everything we've been able to see is simply a molecule of something larger. And if that overly conflicts with the way you want to see things, let me make it easier for you to accept... You have nothing to do with the way things are, you are as insignificant as a grain of sand on the bottom of the ocean floor.

The real ignorance is assuming that Micannon is the only one rational enough to think we should have humility. Human's are c**ky, c**ky enough to claim that one of us might be the son of God.

Also, there ARE billions of religious people and far, far, far fewer religions. Catholicism is followed by millions; Micannon doesn't need to ref*te each Catholic just the ideas that they share.

Instead of callously trying to antagonize people try offering some intelligence to the conversation, you might actually convert some random idiot to your beliefs.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 4/22/2011 12:32 AM
Your reason might be simple, but not foolproof. Mankind can create false ideas like the earth being the center of the universe, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster religion, but we always eventually discern the truth of the situation, by using observable and/or mathematically provable facts (and if you want to say, well we haven't figured out which religion is right yet, or that we haven't identified the whole nature of quantum physics, I say give it time). Furthermore I don't see why we "could not possible comprehend the REASON for existence," even if we may not currently. Also if the observable universe is only so many lightyears old, and thus has finite dimensions, then it would have a theoretical center, just as all macroscopic objects have a center of mass. The universe is a big place, stars with planets and rotating iron cores are not unique to our solar system, maybe complex life might exist elsewhere. BUT it probably is not as advanced as us. Our brains are the most complex thing in the entire known universe. The tens of billions of nuerons that cause thought, ideas, and memories, fire thousands at a time when you just read a word. That's a permutation of 10 to the tenth power, (that's ten zeroes) to the thousanth power. Ten thousand zeroes, that's more than the number of elementary particles in the universe. Our mass might make up a negligible fraction of the universe, but we are not as insignificant as a grain of sand. We are, so far as we have explored, the epitome of the everything that has ever been. The crown jewel of all creation.
1. kylemr87
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 6/27/2011 4:53 PM
So life can develop elsewhere in the Universe, but it can't be as smart as us?

Assuming that we are the only INTELLIGENT life is foolish. I don't believe that aliens come to visit or anything but we can't even see the exact surfaces of most of the distant objects in space, for that matter we can't even see the planets that orbit the stars of closer galaxies. What we see is just a galaxy or a cloud of space dust, to assume that there is no life there is like another intelligent life looking at the Milky Way galaxy seeing stardust and saying, "There's PROBABLY nothing intelligent in that galaxy, let's move on. No need to explore."

No one will understand the REASON for existence because it is most likely not one finite answer but a conglomerate of information that explains it. But even though we can say that a cat is a cat because of four legs, fluffy tail and it meows; we still cannot explain a cat 100% because no one knows every detail about them.

Way to go pseudo intellectual A. Listen, your philosophical point of being insignificant is just as easily combated with the argument "we are all crucial pieces in a universe that is made of trillions of crucial pieces" I enjoyed the simile at the end, how much creative energy did you spend on it? Listen I'm not saying we are important or crucial, but for the same reason we cannot say we are important, your dumbass can't say we aren't. Nobody can definitively say anything on the subject. At what point have you outwardly effected or been significant to anything but what is on the planet? The planet being another grain of sand amidst the Universe. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great man; affected millions; changed the status quo of America; still insignificant to anything actually important in the Universe.

In the same way, he is completely significant to us as we struggle to live with each other.

Significance is relative. A shark on land isn't doing anything significant, but in the ocean he is a ferocious predator maybe becoming significant to a school of fish about to be eaten.

Take an astronomy class. You'll learn how gravity and the conservation of momentum helped to form galaxies and further formed into solar systems where planets sometimes form orbiting a star. All the data used to see how the Earth and our sun and all other stars are proven by the laws of physics. They just applied the same laws of physics that work on Earth to see how everything else in the universe has been created. Some thing are still unknown, but the way the solar system was made was proven to be by the laws of physics, not god. I guess you could believe that god ordered the solar system to be made in that way, but that wouldn't really be following what the Bible says then. There you go, you're welcome for enlightening you. I don't know how you didn't know that already.

God obviously doesn't work by human rules: People can't create something from nothing. I agree that it doesn't have to be the Biblical God, but if it is God would have to work by human standards because he proclaimed (to somebody) that he was creating us in their image. Yet, another loop of misinformation created by the men who wrote the Bible.

To all atheists: A fossil of "whatever" is found in the desert. No one can explain how it got there. Atheists would say it was random? But your science proves otherwise. We know, because of your science, that a creature died and left its mark on the planet.

Whatever created us probably isn't around anymore. We can't explain how we got here. Atheists would say it was random? But your science will prove otherwise.

We may not come from a man in the sky, or two elemental continents colliding (Norse myth) but science dictates that it can't have been random.

So here is a question I challenge any christian to answer. God is omniscient, meaning he knows everything. So by definition God knew that Satan would tempt Eve and that Eve would take a bite of the fruit of the Tree of Life. God knew that Eve would offer that fruit to Adam and he would then eat of it. What troubles me is, how is it fair that God knowingly put Adam and Eve into a situation where he already knew the outcome would be bad and then punish them for it? And don't tell me "God wanted to see what would happen" he knows everything remember.

The idea of a omniscient god goes completely against the christian idea that god gave humans freewill. To propose another question said by the wise old philosopher Epicurus "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"

God knew that bad things would happen yet he still created Adam and Eve, because he knew through all of the pain and suffering that would occur as a result, that the end result would be more beautiful, and fulfilling than any of the s**t that we do. To answer the second question, God is all knowing. At any given moment, he knows that there are people being killed/robbed/raped/and hurt, but he knows that good can come out of suffering, and hope can come out of pain. It's less a matter of what he "allows" and more of what Satan chooses to do.

Satan is not the devil in the bible, nor is he the serpent that tempts Adam and Eve. Satan is seen first in the book of Samuel and all he does there is "tempts" David, again in Job, and again in the Gospels "tempting" Jesus. He is the opponent, the adversary, a tempter. The idea that he rules h**l with fire and a pitchfork is from mythology. God knew what would happen if Eve gave into the temptation and took the fruit. We would have the beautiful world that we all know today. He also knew what would happen if Eve left the serpent and did not give in. Eve had free will to decide right up through the moment she took the apple. Going back to the story of Job: without Eve taking the apple we wouldn't have suffering in this world, and Job shows us that no one gets out of the world without suffering, whether it's fair or not. Life requires suffering so that the good may be held in high regard once achieved.

I read this stuff and never reply, however, the idea is that Satan tempted Adam and Eve with the forbidden fruit from the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad" saying it would make them "like God" thereby questioning the authority of God to rule. As God is just, he could not simply kill Satan or Adam and Eve without giving them the opportunity to justify their claim; that they COULD do a better job of ruling then Him. THAT is why we have had disasters, suffering, horrible atrocities etc. God is giving humanity the chance to rule for ourselves. When it has been conclusively proven that we can't He will take back his authority and do away with those resistant to His rule. As far as the length of time, we have tried multiple versions of government from the tribal leader to monarchy, dictatorships, communism and many more, all the way to democracy, all possible types of governments need to be attempted to truly prove we're incapable of ruling over ourselves. We are living through our own failure waiting for a much needed intervention. The whole theme of the Bible is Sovereignty; who has the right to rule and how it will come to take place.

I realize that this will not change the mind of anyone, that was not my intent, I just wanted to adequately answer the question of why God permits suffering.

yes. that's what he said. how can we appreciate life without experiencing disaster. If everything were good, how would you know what bad was. If nothing could go wrong why would you do anything. "Everything happens for a reason." I don't care if you see/understand the reason because God does. The holocaust was decided by Hitler and N***s. That's free will. Nuclear disasters also have free will tied to them as well as war.

Atheists just don't get it. The dimension of spirituality is entirely missing from their lives, and that is so very sad. Have your few minutes of fun taking snide potshots at a devout segment of our pop**ace who refuse to fight back. They know true and lasting happiness, while any pleasure you experience is base, empty and very fleeting.

quit trumpeting gideon. i am an atheist. a non theist. and i find my spirituality all the time. whether i'm playing with a dog, walking in the woods, sitting in a field, or standing on the beach, i not only feel overwhelmingly connected with every living thing on earth, but know that i am, as we are all made of the same ingredients that all came from the same place. if you'd like to tell me my pleasures are fleeting, base, and empty, i will tell you this: i know that i appreciate life more than you because i know that this is the only life i have, and that when i am dead, i will become the nutrients for other life to grow live. suffering happens. it does not happen because god wants us to be a little bit smarter and more afraid of him when we get to heaven. it happens because there are bad people who do bad things because they have bad morals, and many of these people do these things in the name of religion (911, for example). and if there is a god, i don't necessarily jump at the thought of worshipping him for eternity. you can go and drink wine with your pedofile popes and whatnot while you laugh about how jesus pulled that stunt that one time... i'm going to drink beer and have some amazing conversation with Plato and Galileo. while we listen to jimi hendrix sweat it out. maybe beat the s**t out of hitler while we're down there. the possibilities are endless!

I've only met one unhappy atheist and his lack of happiness had nothing to do with his lack of religion. Besides the reasons don't fight back against comments and jokes like the ones on this page is because they don't know what the f**k to say. Our "potshots" are quite accurate of the Christian religion which you guys just choose to ignore as our ignorance when it is truely your own for believing in such an absurd idea.

The bible doesn't say that it's our job to kill atheists or gay people....that's completely against what God and the bible says....humans don't have the right to take anyone's life! I'm a Christian, and these comics are bad....but funny. I mean, Christians just need to lighten up, honestly. I'm sorry to all of the atheists on this page that have had bad experiences with Christians. Please don't judge God and the bible based on what humans do or say-we're NOT PERFECT and don't accurately reflect God's love, no matter how hard we try. There are a lot of things about the church and Christianity that I don't agree with, and that are very hypocritical and put Christianity in a bad light. Personally, I don't really look at my faith as a religion (because religion and most institutions of it are so flawed) but as a relationship. That's just my opinion though! But in all seriousness, feel free to ask me ANY questions at all! No judgment, no lecture, no bible-thumping-I hate that too. This goes out to anyone....

"The bible doesn't say that it's our job to kill atheists or gay people..." Really?

Lev. 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

2 Chronicles, 15:12-13 And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul, but that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman.

Those both sound pretty cut-and-dry to me...

Oh trust me, we don't judge God or the Bible by what human say, we judge them by what the Bible says. And any god that commands his people to commit genocide against the Midians, Amorites, and the rest of the Canaanites, in addition to prescribing death to homosexuals, people who work on the Sabbath, and kids who curse their parents is not a god who I would want to base my morality on. Y'know, if I believed he was an actual god in the first place, and not just the product of the mythology of a particular group of Bronze Age nomads.

homosexual acts dont equal homosexuals...God created homosexuals and its clear that for many homosexuals, that is whats natural to them. God's message is to not go against what is natural and in the years of the bible, homosexuality was not recognized as anything, no one knew a man could be attracted to a man or a woman to a woman, they knew not to do it because it wasn't natural to them.

Actually, in my experience, Atheists tend to me more educated than those devoted to any one single way of thought. Especially on the subject of religion. It seems counterintuitive at first, that the 'enemy' of religion knows more about it than the followers, but this is often the case. Most Atheists I know have studied MANY religions, and have actually read the books that you sheep seem to just carry around for dramatic effect. And it's hard not to judge christians, among others, since the vast majority of them are uneducated, and incapable of thinking for themselves. Whatever the church and government tell them is the only reality they will ever know. Now, that rant being said, I personally am not an Atheist, nor am I a follower of any one religion. I am of the mind that "whatever it is you seek, you fill find". Nothing is true, all things are permitted.

Saying that you've studied religions and he can ask you anything doesn't really defeat Pope_Mindless23's point. He said "tend to be" and "the vast majority of", he didn't say every single christian was uneducated. And he's right, I'm agnostic and I have debates about christianity with friends of mine who are christian and I always come out on top in them because I know more things from the bible than they do. It's not even that I've studied religion thoroughly, I just had to go through the same religion classes as they did and I actually paid attention to what our religion teachers were saying. I don't know much about other religions and I only really know about the christian religion because I was raised catholic. I even wanted to believe in magic and a god and stuff because I thought it would be cool (personally though, I hate God; if he exists he's kind of a dick) but I just never really felt any sort of belief. My rationality works against me I guess. And I really hope that the reason you're the most fulfilled person you know is because you've done impressive things with your life, not just because you have a strong belief in God. It'd be kind of depressing otherwise. I'd like to say 'pathetic' but it sounds ruder than I mean it to be. I guess I could just say that I'd pity you. Personally, I frown a lot but that's just because I've made poor life decisions. They have nothing to do with religion or a lack thereof. I can easily smile and laugh and I exercise that ability plenty. I am not and have never been afraid of death. And I don't expect or even want to live to old age. That being said, I enjoy every moment of being alive. Even when I'm depressed I can just think about how great it is to feel things and exist.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 5/15/2011 3:19 PM
That is the problem, modern Christianity tends to focus on what PEOPLE tell them and what PEOPLE say, rather than actually read the Bible, likewise what had happened in the Crusades and whatnot, it was one persons interpretation on how the Bible was read, if anybody were to actually read and act upon what was written then the world would have difficulty hating Christians, sadly as I sad before many people claim things in the name of God, when in fact only few people have spoken with God and know what he wants, even as a Christian I must be very wary of what people want, due to the fact that as humans we all want to serve our selfish desires, the problem is many "Christians" fool themselves into thinking what they are doing is Gods will when in fact it is their own. \npaintman_4@juno.com

I take it you are a christian Jaane. Tell me this... you christians always go on about absolute morality and how we atheists cant possibly tell right from wrong without god... oh yeah? The bible does not only tell you to love thy neighbour, it also tells you to commit genocide in gods' name, it tells you to stone homosexuals and anyone who commits adultery to death... it tells you to kill anyone who tries to win you over to another religion... it tells you that you should rather give your own daughter to a rapist than your guest (who happens to be male), you can ofcourse kill her afterwards in shame. Absolute morality? Not something I want. Over the centuries we have come to reject some of these implications from the bible, not because god told us they were wrong.. hey! why would he? he supposedly wrote it... no, because most of use are sane, reasonable, logical, ethical people... science and philosophy have taught us everything we know of ethics and morality. Not God. and one more thing. To believe in absolute christian morality, is to say "if god didn't exist, I would be raping children and killing them". are you prepared to say that?

"Only a Sith deals in absolutes" Obi Wan Kenobi, Star Wars.\nit means; Only the "evil" (here I would like to use the word pessimistic) see in black and white. If God didn't exist, I would be raping children and killing them is the most black and white statement I've ever heard. first off if God didn't exist no one would be here therefore I would be unable to rape or blahblahblah. Christians do read the Old Testament, but we live by the rules Jesus gave us in the New Testament. "Love your neighbor" You're wrong in every way, but you don't realize, but I still love you and hope you find light.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 5/17/2011 3:38 AM
.......Your argument is stupid. You reject his idea completely just because it has the hypothetical that god doesn't exist. Since you're so narrowminded, try looking at it like this: To believe in absolute christian morality is to say "if god hadn't told me not to, I would be raping children and killing them". Does that work for you? And if you just go by the New Testament, that's also pretty stupid. Forgive me for being impolite, but it just is. If God is omnipotent and all knowing, he wouldn't have changed his mind on the things he said in the Old Testament and then sent Jesus (or himself, I guess) down to earth with a new way of doing things. And if someone says that it's okay to commit genocide, murder people for being gay or for trying to convert you, and to give your daughter to a rapist, would you just ignore all that when later on they're like "Oh wait no, love everybody. My bad."? Because that's basically what happened since Jesus and God are the same person. And at the end there where you say Aven is wrong in every way? That's the problem with some Christians when they debate this. You just flat out said that everything he said was wrong even though everything he said was actually right. Without any real argument to help either, just a flat out "You're wrong". At the ending his wording could have been different but the point he was making was a sound one. To be fair though, you do get points for referencing Star Wars. Just because Star Wars is awesome though, not because you had a whole lot of merit to what you were saying.

Oh, the "incorrect readings of the Bible"-thing again. I notice we never get any specific examples telling us what the correcter version is :) But I'll make a better lol than the ones above then. One that is indisp**ably accurate - not to the "correct" reading of the Bible, but to human history: God: Create long book full of very, very ambiguous language. Make people convinced that they can know the "correct" way to read it, even when millions read it an entirely different way. Watch and do nothing as millions of people kill and torture each other horrifically over various "correct" religions. Don't do anything to clarify what is meant or what the correct religion is - just let people guess some more, while many of them continue to oppress and hurt people in my name. A little longer, but more accurate I think (if God existed, that is).

I'm going to have to disagree on that front. I'm not a devout Christian in the strictest terms but theological study is something I'm very interested in and something a lot of people don't have. Which is sad because, at this point, it requires a lot of work to counteract all the negative conceptions about Christianity that the non-Christian pop**ation has that are caused by all those extremely vocal religious "leaders" who get it wrong and think they've got it right. It's really distressing.

The belief that Scripture contradicts itself is owed to the same improper reading that I referred to before. I used to think of the Bible much the same way as you described (however, I have never been a Satanist). Then I found some professors who weren't just trying to indoctrinate me and actually wanted to answer the questions that I had and defend their points with something more than "this is what the Scripture says." It was eye-opening for me. I can't say it caused any immediate religious epiphanies in my life but it's help me understand what I believe in and decide if I actually DO believe it. So, to follow their lead, I'll promote religious study (all religions, mind you) for the sake of being true to one's own self, not just for the sake of being true to an institution.

If you think that all Christians subscribe to a literal interpretation of the Bible, then you're sadly mistaken. It's only fundamentalist Christians that seriously believe the world was created in 7 days. So if you were trying to imply that I think that science is wrong and that the Bible is all that's needed, then you're wrong. I'm actually a very avid evolutionalist. That doesn't interfere with the strength of my faith at all.

It should because the Bible was written to be taken literally. They didn't write it to be allegorical. It's just know that most people are too smart to believe in much of the Bible and instead of doing the rational thing and recognizing it as not a Holy Book, people are afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone and just claim that it's not supposed to be taken literally. To recap, either believe in the Bible how it is (because what else is the point of it) or don't believe in it at all as a Holy Book.

No, its not supposed to be taken literally, especially the Old Testament. Just a bunch of stories told to communicate a message. Multiple priests have confirmed this to me, if that makes a difference or not.

All priests say different things. Theology is basically the study of looking at something halfway and closing your eyes for the rest and screaming "I'm right! I'm right!" I study both philosophy and religion. The bible was originally meant for a literal interpertation until we grew up a little and realized it was b******t so then we said it wasn't literal. Telling people to k**l g**s and atheists and people who didn't believe in what they did is morally appalling literal or not. Besides which texts are supposed to be taken literally? The ones that even the christians can tell is total b*******. . What about later when we discover more about the universe; are more things in the bible going to be only metaphorical? Is God just a metaphor too?

...just because something has been around for a very very long time does NOT mean that it should be taken for truth. ...when you look at history, seriously, you'll actually see that more often than not, the opposite is more accurate. It's delightful to see so many people willing to submit themselves to an idea that was conjured up when 'humans' were in their intellectual infancy - especially since the topic at hand was scribbled down by the dumb folks of that time period. It's not like christianity is originality either; this garbage has been countlessly shown to be lifted from many other sources! To stevie: congratulations, you have found sources for the 'christ' or 'christos' ....which happens to be a TITLE, not a name. People have tacked that onto jesus's name to say that he is the anointed one, but that came much later. In fact, when you really start looking into the matter, you may be surprised to find that there are very high odds that the one known as 'jesus' never even existed at all. ....there are even higher odds that 'jesus' and the tales about him, were lifted directly from some of the solar deities from far beyond his time; you might be fascinated by the parallels between jesus and horus for example. “I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”

Not quite sure what you mean here. There are plenty of secular references to Christ. . In AD 64, Tacitus explains the word "Christian" by saying "it is derived from Christ, whom the procurator Pontius Pilate had executed in the reign of Tiberius." Pliny the Younger calls the first Christians "adherents of a crude superstition, who sang hymns to Christ as to a God." Suetonius said of the emperor Claudius "He expelled the Jews (49 AD), who had on the instigation of Chrestus continually been causing disturbances from Rome". One passage of Josephius appears to have been doctored by early Christians, but one is entirely authentic: "James, the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, was stoned in (AD 62)" Even in the ancient Talmud there are references to Christ. They call him the (illegitimate) son of a man called Panther named Yeshu, said he worked magic, ridiculed the wise, stirred up and seduced the people, gathered disciples about him, and was "hanged" on the eve of the Passover. It is said that even the opponents of Christianity never doubted the historicity of Jesus.

Good grief! You guys are so obsessed with trying to slam Christianity, you disregard even what few stone cold facts come your way. Just do a little research on the subject. Ask any serious historian or Bible scholar; they will cite the exact same evidence I did. I'm not trying to persuade anyone that Christ was divine; just that he did in fact walk the earth as a man. You can go back to slamming the faithful now.

I'm an Atheist, and I think Stevie has some merit here. A lot of the "Jesus never existed" ideas were spread by the movie "Zeitgeist," a propaganda piece that distorts and even outright makes up facts to suit its agenda (including the incorrect statement that Mithra/Horus/Dyonisus were all nearly identical to the Jesus story). I am an atheist. I don't beleive there is a god, and thus I don't beleive that a Jew born two-thousand years ago is his son. But as always, I would rather get the facts right, and so I recommend not biting Stevie's head off and instead go and do research yourself. Denial of Jesus' existence (at least as a man) can be just as dogmatic as insisting he's the son of God.

As an atheist (who was raised in a devout christian family and who attended a very religious high school) I have spent a lot of time researching the opposing sides of Christianity. I am pretty sure that there are two and only two mentions of Jesus Christ from secular scholars around his time. The first one briefly mentions his crucifixion and the second one notes an uprising in Rome started by "the followers of Jesus Christ." But there are plenty of claims of other messiahs at the time who also had followers that claimed "their" messiah had risen from the dead. To say that there are NO mentions (or A LOT) of mentions about Jesus around that time from scholars is just wrong. There are very few. But who cares really. Will it affect Christians or Atheist? No.

That's how you know that you shouldn't hire people that have been to prison (most of them are repeat offenders or will become so). Ever heard of an FBI profiler? Their entire job is to judge. And guess what? They catch bad guys. Telling people not to judge is like telling people not to breath, it's impossible and it is how we survive our world. I have but one thing to say. I admit, the Bible is a good book. It does teach some valuable lessons, much like Aesop's fables. I have read most of it (the Bible), and stilll find no reason to think I was "Made" by anything other than my father's sperm meeting my mother's egg. There is no reason for me to think that any/all of the stories in the bible are true. I honestly am more inclined to think what I mentioned before: the bible is (very generally... VERY) a guideline to moral ambiguities. Which is followed by most people of western culture, religious or not.

I realize this is somewhat rambling. Don't call me out for it; lack of sleep. In conclusion, I say this: the Bible is just a book. A good book, but nevertheless, merely a book. And, it is not the only book.

The bible is as thick as a brick as well as are many of it's adherents, not all, because there are always exceptions to bricks being thick. I would rather come to my own moral conclusions based on a bit of reasoning and sound observational judgement than utilize the bible's form of moral ambiguities and contradictions as a basis for a constructive society. My point is I doubt the validity of a "Good" book that seems to be at odds with itself over what is right and wrong and still professes to be the word of god. Do you hear thunder!? God tells US not to judge because we do not have anywhere near the amount of wisdom it takes to be able to judge. How can you try and tell me I have a thorn in my eye when there's a plank in yours? This is a basic theme for us to live by, we can't judge each other because we are all on the same level. God however being the creator of everything would obviously have the capacity to judge right and wrong. He doesnt say it's a sin to judge, just that it's a sin to judge something or someone to which you don't have complete knowledge of. To make it easier think of it like this, in a classroom the teacher would be able to judge the students in his/her class because that's their job and they are on a much higher level than the students. While the students would be wrong to judge each other becasue none of them know anything more about life than any other. And if they think they do theyre wrong

how is free will a bs argument? God knew that there was the possibility of suffering, but he created the world to be perfect. He didn't create suffering, suffering is just the product of people trying to do things on their own. I've seen people that would appear to most as people suffering through life, living with disease and bodies that dont work. These people were some of the happiest people I've ever met because of their relationship with God through Christ.

While I agree Atheist's argument is invalid, I have to agree with him that free will is a BS argument for God. Simply put, God is supposed to be omniscient, but omniscience is impossible in a universe in which even one creature has free will. If that creature can make his own choices, nobody can truly know the f*ture. Even if one was to argue that "God knows all possible f*tures," your God would not know WHICH f*ture is THE f*ture. Thus, God, as an omniscient, omnipotent being, cannot exist if free will does, creating a heinous contradiction.

Faith is nothing more than an excuse to ignore reason, and common sense. To ignore all reason and act or believe based purely on what is often referred to as "Blind Faith" is to chose ignorance. I am not saying this to in any way bad mouth religion or those who believe. The fact is if in fact you do indeed believe in God, then you have to ask yourself. Why would he give to us science, reason, common sense, and curiosity, Why would he create this beautiful and infinite Universe, only to tell us to ignore it, shun anything that is interesting or different, and spend our whole lives living in the dark and worshiping a book.

If in fact you can be happy choosing to live your life in ignorance than I am honestly and truly jealous of you. To live your life in a world of black and white, good and evil, and right and wrong, with absolutely no middle ground is something most of us lose as a child.

When I was young I believed, I was the perfect example of the faithful lamb of God. Then When I was 12, it came time for my younger sister to make her first communion. I was really excited because my parents had chosen me to film the whole ceremony. My sister and her Sunday class with 8 other students showed up for their big day, all of them taking their assigned seats, that is except for my family. On arrival we were told my sister would have to wait till the mass was over for her to make her communion.

My sister is Autistic. She is the sweetest girl you will ever meet but because she was different they tried to stop us from being part of the ceremony. The Bishop actually went so far as to say that she should be institutionalized. Thanks to the support and decency of some of the other families and a fantastic organization that helps in cases such as this she was able to still have her first communion, none the wiser that a "God faring member" of the lord's clergy looked at her in such a way.

Neither myself or any member of my family has set foot in a church since that day. I am proud to say that the two families that spoke in our favor that day stopped going as well. If you need God to be a good person then I like to think if he exists then even if he loves you he is disappointed. If he is real I think he would want you to be a good person on your own not because he said so.

Oh and a side note F&*$ all of you who think being gay is a "Hell worthy sin"... Sorry just have to add that to any religious discussion I have.

Eddie, He does not tell us to ignore those things, and the point is not to worship a book. I'm very sorry for your terrible experience, it sounds like you went to a church with very confused "God faring members". Any true man of God would understand that it's not any persons place to judge any other person, we are asked to love everyone as equals - basically impossible for any human to do, which is why we have to look to God for help. And no, being gay is not a h**l worthy sin, one of the biggest mistakes people make is taking the interpretations of the Catholic church and assume that that is what God says. We are all loved equally in His eyes, that seems to be the hardest thing for people to believe

If he knows everything, for example, it is impossible for him to be surprised. If he cannot be surprised, he cannot be disappointed, as he often is in the Bible. He can't be disappointed that we are sinful--he must know exactly how many people will go to h**l, why they will go, and how he could prevent that, if he wanted to. He knows because he set up the whole system--and he set it up so that many people will go to h**l to be tortured for eternity, and many, many people will suffer during their lives.

He didn't have to set it up that way. He chose to, and he could change it anytime he wants to. For that matter, why should we feel grateful that he sacrificed his only son? He knew he was going to sacrifice him all along, sent him to earth and let him lay in a manger and argue in the temple, all along knowing that JC would be crucified. He didn't have to take that route. He's god. He could have forgiven all sin with a wave of his hand. To chose to do something that was totally preventable, and completely unnecessary, is not a sacrifice. For that matter, how is it possible for an all-powerful being to lose anything? And if you can't lose something, you can't sacrifice. Is the death of Christ's earthly body really a loss for God? That doesn't make any sense. Unless there are limits to his omniscience and omnipresence, and I don't think any Christian would agree to that.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 1/13/2011 1:42 PM
The problem arises not from the fact of his omniscience, like I've been saying all along (even though it's simply a theory like all other religions) God could willfully choose to limit his power on the earth itself. If he created us out of love and for the express purpose of loving Him and each other, than you would have to agree that he couldn't intervene on our daily earth issues. If in this way he gives us a free and separate will from His than he simply cannot intervene or hed be breaking his own rules. Itd be like a shotgun wedding, yes there can be a relationship there, but it most likely wouldn't be true love. The whole point of living a peaceful Christ filled life is to make your life and the lives of those around you more enjoyable.

About your point on him being unable to lose anything, of course we know that if God is omnipotent than he would know all that has and will happen. Just think about the unfathomable complexity that is just our little planet, let alone the universe, things like chaos theory that imply that the flap of a butterflies wings can cause a tsunami across the globe, or the double slit experiment www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfPeprQ7oGc).

Just because he knows the terrible things that will take place doesnt mean they dont tear at his insides as much as they do to us even though we are surprised by them. What's even more sad from his perspective is knowing and being unable to do anything about it because we must each make our own free decisions to follow him before we are able to accept his help.

First problem with your argument; "If he created us out of love and for the express purpose of loving Him and each other..." why would a being that is pure and all knowing even want/need something to love said being in return? To even address the question with an answer implies that God is imperfect for having a want/need. Would not a supreme being with infinite power/intellect have any need for such petty emotion? Second problem; “Itd be like a shotgun wedding, yes there can be a relationship there, but..." God is all powerful etc. he would be able to create an environment in which no matter what anyone did or thought they would all still do what he intended them to do, this also encompasses the free will debate (I personally am a hard determinist). In other words if he truly loved and cared for everyone then he would have made a universe where at the very least suffering was outweighed by happiness or to the extent that there was no suffering (period), and that would only be possible with infinite power. So if God did not create such a suffer free environment is it because he is not all powerful or because he is not benevolent? Or are we some side project in a far more advanced civilizations science experiment? Third problem; natural disasters, all knowing can equivocate to seeing the f*ture with utmost certainty. So God creates planet with natural disasters even though he knows that over time countless lives will end needlessly all for the sake of not having a shotgun wedding. Seems like quite the cost to pay just to have "real" love. Which leads me to my next point; is it love only due to the claim that if the follower does not love God they will be damned for all eternity. In a nutshell God says love me or be damned. Is it out of fear or just love that the follower accepts God? Fear is a very powerful motivator. Something that I feel most religious people do not understand is the concept of infinity. To understand something that is truly limitless is so far out of their grasp that they do not realize it is the downfall of most of their arguments. God has no limits yet it is the case that things are out of his hands and he chooses to do nothing about them. But why would God choose to do nothing if he is benevolent? It makes no sense. Reductio absurdum. The only thing that religious followers would have to do to make their claims countless times more plausible is to say that God has limits. Another way to think of the problem of infinity is when I ask “is it possible for God to make a lunch so large that even he cannot finish it?” God is limitless so he can make a lunch to be so large that he would not be able to finish it, but to say that would say that God has a limit. Or, God is limitless he would be able to finish it said lunch, but to assume that would imply that God does not possess the power to make said lunch. My email ian_lt88@yahoo.com

Hey,
I'm a fairly devout Catholic, and there is one argument I have never been able to understand.

How do horrible deaths in the world suggest God could not exist?
I mean if there is a perfect afterlife then wouldn't we want Him to let us die?

Thanks.

God looks down on things like this that spread hate with nothing bud sadness. Most of these take a specific interpretation of the bible (that God created evil), which is an idea created by man, and then claim that that (insert horrible event) is God's will. God is only good, everything bad in the world is that way only because it is without God. If you choose to read the bible, do so objectively and with deep reflection. Don't listen to the thousands of interpretations that are thrown at you daily by people who truly know next to nothing. I don't know everything about it either, but a few things we can be sure of are that God created the world and He created love, and because of this love he cannot force any one of his creations to do his will. It's the free will that he gave us all because he loved us so much that prevents him from saving us from immediate real world danger. He can't control the free will of people who choose to not do His will, that drunk driver that killed your best friend or family member was acting on his own. The world can be a horrible place when free agents are all doing their own will rather than following Gods'. So no He will never hate you for being gay, or for making mistakes, or even for claiming that He doesn't exist, in fact He loves all of those people just as much as He loves the guy who cured polio or who rescued those miners in Chile. He will always love you and want for you to come back to him, he just hopes you keep an open mind when he tries to get your attention.
1. free will
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 2/05/2011 3:21 PM
how can you love someone when you dont even know who they are? And if he did know who we are, then he made us knowing that is how we we would be, or else he couldn't love us...so either he loves us without even knowing us, or he made us knowing what we would do, therefore taking away our "free will" since he made us knowing we would do it, therefore our will can't be changed. If the first is the case, he is irresponsible, and if the second is the case then he made evil... also, if god loves us so much that he doesnt want to interfere with our own free will, yet watches as we suffer because of our bad choices, how can he be so loving? Think about the case of r**e...the victim is completely powerless no longer having their free will to take into account...if God was so loving, surely he would understand the situation and be able to momentarily help out? But if he did then he is interfering with the other person's free will, so either way he would be neglecting either of the person's free will...so shouldn't he help out in a way that will allow the victim to be able to express their will as opposed to letting the harasser get away with it? idk...if i had the power to help others instantaneously, i would...i think thats the loving thing to do. free will takes into account perspective...and you cant give everyone free will when we are sinners because that entails someone's will overpowering another persons. we dont live in a utopia, and god knows that, and by giving us free will he knows that people will have different opinions that will never allow for a utopia, therefore he knows that such evils are a possibility...the god you speak of is quite the gambler then and irresponsible. And if you say that god is allowing us to do that, and still loves us, it goes back up to my first paragraph...

I couldnt make it past the midway point of your second sentence. First off, if God does exist, how do you know what "He" looks down upon, and secondly, all ideas are created by man. The ideas conveyed in the Bible are all ideas created by man because they were written by men. Unless there's an even more unbelievable part to the bible where god hands down literature to the apostles and says "these are my words, spread them." Didn't happen. Because God doesn't exist. Jesus' ideas were pretty good for the most part, though.

Pete, I used to be a devout Christian and believed strongly in everything you just said. But I was wrong then and you're wrong now. Saying that God is only good, the world is bad, we have free-will, etc, etc. is only one of thousands of interpretations of the Bible. Don't be so arrogant as to claim your views are automatically above those of others.
I would like to make a point on free-will. I assume that you believe before anything was created, there was God, and that God created all things, correct? The cause-effect chain of any and all events within the universe ultimately leads back to God's actions. The outcome of all events rest squarely on God's shoulders. Everything that takes place--good, evil, pleasure, suffering, holocausts, believers entering heaven, non-believers condemned to h**l, EVERYTHING--is God's sole responsibility. He crafted our natures and the ways we behave. He foresaw the suffering that would take place if he gave us free-will; if He put us in the garden with forbidden fruit. God is the parent that left a loaded gun on the coffee table for his children. Is that a just, responsible, or loving thing for a parent to do?
1. Pete
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 1/06/2011 12:27 AM
I dont believe that he is solely responsible for everything that happens in the world. Yes he crafted our nature and the nature of everything - the laws of physics for example - which is exactly why he can't interfere with the plan already set in motion. If he wanted to create robots who submitted to his will he would have, instead he gave us the option to say no and go our own way, even though it breaks his heart when we do. God does everything within his power to help every given situation, the problem most people have is in grasping that he has limited his own power on Earth. He created a world with free agents with the capacity for love, and then created physical laws for that world to abide by. He cant defy his own ground rules and perform what we would consider to be miracles because that would take away the need for faith. Let me put it this way, the only way to have true love is for both sides to have seen all their options and both have openly chosen each other, it doesnt work if you are placed with someone and told to be together for life. In the same way, God wants to give his people the option of following their own free will, but he wants everyone to come back to him in the end. And because so many choose to do their own thing we end up with death and destruction

Catholicism isn't christianity. I havent studied the bible enough to know answers to most biblical questions, but I do know that it says Jesus performed miracles and that after him there would be no more until his return. People are so cold towards christianity because of the huge stigma towards believers that we are crazy and we dont accept facts, I look at evidence and make the best decisions I can based on that. No it would not mean he's not omnipotent if he explicitly limited his own power on Earth. If his goal was to use love to bring all of his creations back to him in the end than it would be literally impossible for him to use all of his power to change the minds of the free agents he created. It would be a contradiction if he gave us all free will and then used sheer power to make us love him back, the whole point is for each of us to make a free decision to love him back. To answer your question, i'm not ignorant, I believe in evolution and modern science. Modern technology has nothing to do with faith, and I can't afford health insurance anyway

I am a christian and I thank God that he gave me a sense of humor. Although most would find these pictures offensive, I found them funny. I don't agree with your beliefs, but that's what makes us human. You may be an atheist, you may believe that I am a total idiot, but I can assure you that God believes in atheist. He believes that we all have good in our heart. You can say, "Well, if God were real then why did he create evil?" I can't give you an answer to satisfy you I'm sure, but I'll give it a shot. God created possitive and negative, both ends of the spectrum. We all are born in the possitive, but soon we encounter the negative, look at any newborn child and what do you see? Innocense. It's like lifting weights, why do we lift more than we are comfortable lifting? We do it so that we can get stronger, and thats why there is negative powers in the universe so that we can push ourselves. If there was nothing but possitive then we would never grow mentaly, physically, or spiritually. I too have had my doubts at times as to wether there is a God but that is just those negative thoughts in my head. So one day I hope you realize that God is real and he loves you very much, until that day I'll pray for you ...God bless

And the problem with the Biblical god is not just that evil exists, but also that he often endorses immoral things that we humans -- using REASON -- have cast aside as evil. AKA slavery, child abuse, mistreatment of women, etc.

Actually, according to your book, we're all born with the stain of original sin for a fruit that our many-generations removed ancestors ate. So we're not all born in the "possitive"(sic), we're all born into sin and must spend our pitiful existence atoning for it.
Try telling a 5 year old starving, HIV-infected, disease ridden African who has known nothing but the perpetual agony of an empty stomach and dehydrated body and sickness for his entire life that he suffers so that he can "grow mentaly(sic), physically, or spiritually" in the name of the jealous, zealous, genocidal god of a Bronze age barbarous tribe. He would cry with laughter if his body had the water to create tears or the energy to waste on mirth. Does your smug condescension reach such depths?

''There is nothing that an omnipotent God could not do.'
'No.'
"Then, can God do evil?'
'No.'
"So that evil is nothing, since that is what He cannot do who can do anything.'

God cannot exist because this is a fundamental theory of logic.
If a condition exists, evil, and the only cause of that condition cannot be, God doing evil,
then the condition cannot exist. BUT IT DOES, ERGO GOD IS FAKE.

Sorry John Doe, if that really is your name, but God did create evil:

Not to mention the fact that it is completely illogical to believe in a man in the clouds setting capricious laws given to an ancient culture in an ancient language but expected to be followed for millenia to come. I don't see why we all have to judge each other! Live and let live, love and let love, everyone is wrong when they try so vehemently to prove themselves as being right (rather than listening to each other and seeing that we can all be right and wrong at the same time). We are human, not religion. This will only stop being an argument when we realize that we can not change each others minds, so why keep trying? I understand from both points of view that "he said she said he did she judged" etc. We should all band together and work on spreading love, not hate, not judgement. There are extremists in every religion AND non religions, they are the most hurtful, but maybe they would be less so if we showed them that we can all live harmoniously, even with our differences? Just an idea. I don't think I'm right, I just want more love and less hate is all.

I'm in Catholic school right now and I'm Agnostic. I have a 100 in Theology while the devout Catholic kid that sits in front of me (who by the way yells at me everytime I challenge the teacher) is failing. My teacher is really disappointed in my "low moral standards" because I'm so intelligent but i've "betrayed the Heavenly Father and will, unfortunately, burn in h**l for that".

I don't get how anyone can believe in the Christian God...

No, Jesus would have to be stoned with his mother Mary for raping her. According to Deuteronomy 22:23-25: "If there is a girl who is a virgin engaged to a man, and {another} man finds her in the city and lies with her, then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city and you shall stone them to death; the girl, because she did not cry out in the city, and the man, because he has violated his neighbor's wife. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you." This gets weird to think about: Is Jesus an eternal part of the Trinity? If so, then he existed before his earthly mother, who he eventually raped (she wanted to have sex with her son?) so he could be born human. He violates several incestuous laws found in Leviticus 18.

i think the person used a male because most of the ppl who follow the old and new testaments think that any god would be a male because when the bible was written the wirghter coulnt consider that a women with power as a possible thinkm acctualy i think they would think that any women who showed any power would be evil. for example "n Jewish folklore, from the 8th–10th Century Alphabet of Ben Sira onwards Lilith becomes Adam's first wife, who was created at the same time and from the same earth as Adam. This legend was greatly developed during the Middle Ages, in the tradition of Aggadic midrashim, the Zohar and Jewish mysticism.[3] In the 13th Century writings of Rabbi Isaac ben Jacob ha-Kohen, for example, Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him"

it's funny that you're called open minded. It just seems your brain thinks something, you tip your head and it dribbles it out... what a nonsensical comment, even atheists should discourage something that silly
now even as a Christian or xian as someone said (which i didn't much appreciate but i forgive) i find some of these quite humorous but some of the atheists here are just showing the other members how you are so caught up in slating religion you can't see past that and most people (religious and non-religious) are seeing into what seems like an intelligent group of people and just seeing arrogance and ignorance. Am I saying your the only problem? no. Am I saying every atheist is like that? no. Christians can be just as idiotic on the opposite side but nobody enjoys the h**l bent lust of a person to try and belittle people who think differently from them.
I like the comments that take into consideration all parties. Is this offensive? yes. Should people be irritated by this? yes. Comment on what you think but equally respect other people's perspective!

It's not nonsense, it's philosophy.

Every choice you make is brought on by your previous experiences. If you had two parallell universes where everything went exactly the same up to the point where you make a specific choice, you would always make the same choice.

This means we are all as deterministic as any machine. Hence conciousness being an illusion.

I'm not sure that thought experiment proves non-determinism, just that you can't know all the variables. But I don't know enough about the field, so any quantum mechanics are free to put me in my place...

Well, I would agree that the universe is MOSTLY deterministic on a macro scale, but I've been reading a lot about the crazy crazy world of quantum mechanics lately, and while it's true that non-determinism on a quantum scale to a noticable degree, but when you consider the number of particles in the universe and the timescales involved, those negligible effects really build up. I don't think it would be appropriate to say that the universe is entirely deterministic, even if it is more or less so in a general sense.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 12/29/2010 6:28 PM
Actually, humans have been proved to not be deterministic, but chaotic. A good example of this is the simple strategy-based zero-sum game Rock-Paper-Scissors. It has been shown that this game is chaotic, does not fit the Nash equilibrium, and as a *simple* version of human intellect applied to strategy, it is clear that human choice is not deterministic, but chaotic (although from a macroscopic view it *appears* deterministic, from a microscopic view - 500 choices or fewer iterated - it is clearly chaotic).
1. axelandren
God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 4/05/2011 9:32 AM
Basically I just believe that the chaos theory applies to humans, in that if you know all the variables you can predict the outcome with 100% certainty. As such, if one knew every single detail about a person - thoughts and memories and all - and everything that might influence their actions, you would know how a game of rock-paper-scissors would go. Or, just as we have "if you push this trolley like so it'll move with this velocity and direction", we also have "if you get this thought in that situation, then your next thought will be like so", and this recurses indefinitely. As opposed to "you can have any thought at any time, randomly". Hence the argument of free will being an illusion.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 1/02/2011 9:05 PM
Well that would be true but I still think that Axel is correct because even the act of one round* of Rock-Paper-Scissors can influence the next round. Therefore, the original round is determined by all the previous experiences. The second round is then determined by all the previous experiences and the first round which became a previous experience to the second round.

*round being the time in which two (or more) players choose rock, paper, or scissors and show them to the other player, deciding the winner.

Oh... right, an institution's actions should not be held to the scale of their beliefs... that's some real sound logic if that's what this whole thread is "discussing". But on that case, most of the history of the various "Christian" churches should be ignored in favor of allowing them to reinvent themselves as however they want to be perceived, regardless of a long, long history of war, abuse, genocide, greed and all around douchebaggery in every single institution. Under such logic, the beliefs of the Nazi party should not necessarily be debunked by the fact of their extermination of millions of people of various minority groups. I hope that you can see the logical fallacy therein... Not like anything said on a thread about a cartoon meme is going to change anyone's indoctrinated beliefs or anything... As each of these is rather trivially easy to ref*te - example "Create Homosexuals, Ban Homosexuality" can be skewered pretty easily by substituting one of any number of traits one might be born with, good/bad/neutral and observing that being born with something in no way implies that "God made me this way" - I have to wonder at the credulousness of atheists. Believing that you (mankind) are so important that you couldn't possibly exist without some reason or purpose is an absurd conceit. Believing that we cannot possibly one day cease to exist is a manifestation of desire and, IMHO, the epitome of denial. When you completely resign yourself to God, you stop questioning Him. Everything else is pure circular logic. Faith couldn't happen if God's rules were at all logical because then they could be subjected to proof. These memes are funny and do represent what many theists believe. What you believe is very personal but at the end of the day you are listening to nothing more than the inner voice of your own desires.

You are as ignorant of the atheist position as you accuse them being of yours. Athiests do not claim that there is no real purpose but to exist and then to cease to exist. They simply realize that there is no evidence for god. It's quite obvious that there is a lot more to the universe than we know. I suspect that the truth about why we are here is more wonderful than anything we could invent, and there is evidence for that. Nature and the universe surprise us in wonderful ways with every turn. There is no need to make up a story and hide behind it. It's laziness at best, cowardice at worse.

I have studied the bible - a work of fiction highly open to almost any interpretation. Throughout the ages societies have projected contemporary moralities into its ancient texts. So much has been rejected (we no longer stone adulterors or naughty children, we prosecute murderers and genecidal leaders, we no longer tolerate slavery or racism) that the whole book has become a pointless irrelevance.

God is an Epic Troll: The Best of the Advice God Meme at 12/31/2010 10:43 PM
Okay. I've read it and I'm still seeing contradictions galore. Strobel is not the one to quote here if you're trying to convert atheists. If you describe atheists the way Strobel does "I was living a very immoral life and a drunken life [..] without a moral framework, my personal life was out of control, the drinking, the carousing...I had no moral sense of right or wrong.") I don't think you'd get many agreements here. He lists behaviors, read that again; behaviors, that he had and attributed them to atheism. He may have not had a belief in god, but that does not make him an informed atheist like he portrays himself as. How about you read Dan Barker's Godless? An evangelical preacher turned atheist. Tit for tat.

neither make any "sense" but it takes a huge amount of of faith to believe either because you can not disprove or prove God exists. Christians and other religions have a message of hope in the after life, atheists don't have that hope. If atheists are right we all enjoyed life and everyone dies happy because we lived a life that we perceived as full but if Christians are right we are going to heaven and the upsetting fact is others are going to h**l. That is why Christians are trying to spread this hopeful message because we want everyone to join us in heaven. Sometimes we don't do it in the right manner and offend people by being to forward and sometimes even demeaning but we have the right intentions because we want to see all in the kingdom of God, If you find this offensive I won't apologise because this is what I believe and I have as much say as anyone else here :)

Good luck knowing when your deathbed will be. Couldn't you be hit by a bus tomorrow and die immediately? God is forgiving, but He's also just. He can't do anything but punish people that fall short of the law (everyone) unless they turn to the propitiation in Jesus Christ. If you were to die without doing that, then God wouldn't forgive you because He has to uphold justice.

Where is the justice in the rape/molestation of young children? No court proceeding can heal these wounds. Applying the "test of character" argument shows a lack of compassion, which is itself an imperfection - and provides a contradiction with the assumption of perfection.

Miracles happen every day. The birth of a child, the victory over cancer, survivors of car crashes and of bomb explosions, people are healed of illnesses. I have witnessed miracles on three different continents and I've never seen true poverty or been with those who aren't as privileged as us. You tell me that 27 years of prayer and then watching my brothers mental illness disappear isn't a miracle. Explain that away.
Why is the Gospel spreading on continents like Asia and Africa? Because it's a message of hope that can heal the wounded soul, it gives them hope in their sometimes dire situation, in religious oppression and when they have nothing else.

You just used three entirely different definitions of the word "miracle". Since you know more than our body of medical knowledge, you must be famous! (You may want to research the word "coincide" and the concept of "game theory"). You know, Fraser, nearly all of your arguments boil down to "I'm unwilling to learn therefore nobody else can have knowledge that I'm unaware of". We really do have a body of knowledge, us humans. Shame you're so afraid of it.

Gladly. But I'll do it with a series of questions. What about all the other things you were doing those 27 years? Watering the plants, riding your bike, masturbating to tentacle p**n... How do you know those things didn't cure him instead of the prayer? How do you know it wasn't something completely independent of your own actions? How do you know it wasn't something completely natural? What exactly is the mechanism you propose that imbues prayer with a causal connection to your brother's case? Without that, this is called a false cause fallacy. Logic: you're doing it wrong.

There is a reason that poorer, more desperate masses cling to religion, it's a coping tool psychologically. I'm really happy you've seen these awesome miracles, but unfortunately that doesn't prove that there's a God (or which God did it at all). If you claim that the birth of a child is a miracle and the work of God, then you must also credit God with any children born who don't survive, same thing for those who survive a car crash or an explosion. If God made them live, then he also is responsible for all who die as well, so it's kind of a 50/50 thing.

We don't have to since there are no "miracles".

Simply using a shower would be a "miracle" 400 years ago.
Those people were easy to scam since they mostly didnt know anything. People who knew something could take advantage and use it for gain of power like the Catholic church.
Someone is almost dying of Scurvy, eats an orange and starts feeling fine again! No one can make the connection that the disease was caused by a lack of Vitamin C and the orange took care of that and BOOM! you have your "miracle" in 1620.
