Candice Bergen, Kirstie Alley, Roseanne Barr and Helen Hunt took home the awards in the 1980s and 1990s while more recently newer actresses like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston and Tina Fey have dominated the category. Parker, along with Burnett, have each won the award four times, more than any other actress for the category.
In 2011, the category featured a diverse group of actresses, both seasoned and somewhat new to the television comedy scene. Laura Linney, who starred on the Showtime series "The Big C," took home the statue over Toni Colette from "United States of Tara," Edie Falco from "Nurse Jackie," Tina Fey from "30 Rock" and Lea Michelle from "Glee."
