The greatest scientific breakthroughs of 2012 include the biggest accomplishments and discoveries in the world of science throughout the year. These 2012 scientific breakthroughs are not just highly impressive, they are huge leaps into understanding our world better and doing things that were only pipe dreams not too long ago.

Arguably, the biggest scientific breakthrough came with the Higgs Boson discovery. Using five decades of research, physicists at the Large Hadron Collider discovered the god-like particle which is responsible for giving other elements mass. This breakthrough wasn't simply the biggest of the year but also considered to be the most important fundamental physics discovery in more than a generation.

Other breakthroughs came from out of this world places, in space. After successfully landing the Curiosity rover on Mars, NASA was able to use the on-board tools discovered what it believed to show evidence of water once on the red planet. In other outer space news, an earth-like planet was discovered orbiting Alpha Centauri and SpaceX became the first commercial craft to dock with the International Space Station.

But these important scientific discoveries only scrape the surface of the fantastic breakthroughs from 2012 with other discoveries into stem cell use, SNA, quantum teleportation, genome sequencing and even invisibility all deserve a great deal of recognition as well. Each will serve as a huge step into discovering bigger and better things in 2012.
