Set Your List Options
Just underneath the title of your list and the "description" box, you'll see a button marked "More Options." Clicking there brings up the List Options menu, where you can adjust the list's settings. These include:
List View vs. Blog View:
You have two options on how to display your Ranker list. The first option is to "Display as List." This is how most Ranker lists look, and it's the easiest and simplest way to display a lot of your items in not a lot of space. (Also, it's much easier to vote on a list that's displayed this way, so if you want people to sound off on your picks, this is the option to choose.)
The other choice is to "Display as Blog." This will give more space for each of your items, highlighting any photos or videos you've added and displaying a lot more text. If you want to write a list with more explanations for why certain items have been picked, or that's focused more on media (like a list of great photos, or favorite music videos), choose "DIsplay as Blog."
Numbering Options:
This section of your settings contains 2 options. First, "Display list with numbers next to each item." This just means your final Ranker list will appear ranked. Including numbers on your list is checked by default, but you have the option to uncheck this box, in case you are making a list where you don't feel numbering applies. Like "All The World's Religions", and you realize that ranking those might be *ahem* controversial.
You also have an option to make your list a "Countdown." This swaps the numbering on your list from counting up (1 to 10) to the classic counting down format (10 to 1). It's great for when you want to build a little tension or suspense or mystery around the #1 item, like David Letterman does with his Top 10 lists or movie critics do with their "Best of the Year" lists.
Allow Voting?
Clicking over to the "Voting & Contributions" tab of List Options, you'll see a box called "Allow Voting?" This gives you a choice about whether or not other Ranker members can vote on your list. REMEMBER: If other people vote on the items in your list, we'll move them up or down to represent the consensus of all the voters. So if you want to keep the list in the order you selected, choose "No user voting" here.
Make Your List an Open List?
Making your list an Open List means that any other Ranker users can add their own items once it's published. It's a great way to get more good suggestions for the topic you're listing.
Allow Your LIst to be Reranked?
Selecting this box means the "Rerank this list your way" button will appear on your list, encouraging other Rankers to make their own versions of your same topic.
Ultimate Lists
Moving over to the "Settings" tab, you'll see a section allowing you to "impact an Ultimate List." Ultimate Lists on Ranker gather together different lists from different users, and identify the consensus between all of them. (So if we have 20 different lists about the Best '90s Sitcoms, we can put them all together and figure out what shows the MOST PEOPLE liked the BEST.)
Going into your list and clicking on the drop-down menu here will bring up some suggestions for Ultimate Lists that might share a similar topic. Pick one if you'd like your selections to figure in to our overall rankings.
Unpublish My List:
This gives you the option of saving your list, but hiding it from public view.
Tags
Adding a few relevant tags to your list makes it easier to find. Just make sure that any tags you add on this final tab in the "List Options" menu are very relevant to the page that you're on. So "The Best NFL Quarterbacks" should be tagged things like "Athletes," "Quarterbacks" and "NFL," but not "Sports Teams" or "Running Backs." - 2
Add Commentary
For each item on your list, you have the option of adding your opinions and discussions of each item on the list, and explain why you think this item belongs. When editing, just start typing in the blank box next to the name of any item.
REMEMBER: If you add a lot of text to all of your items (more than a sentence or so each), consider selecting "Display as Blog" so everyone can easily read what you've written! - 3
Add Photos
Images make your page more readable and inviting, and give it some added personality, as well as readability.
If you're in ""List View,"" add an image by clicking on the green button with the camera icon next to each item. In ""Blog View,"" you will see a button marked ""Select New Image"" underneath each item. Clicking here will bring up the image menu.
You have three options for adding a photo to an item:
- Select an image from your computer: If you have a certain photo on your computer that you want to associate with the item on your list (which will populate to that item's page on Ranker, so make sure it's a relevant image), open up the image editor and click the ""Browse"" button on the top line. This will allow you to choose a file from your computer that will then be uploaded to the site and displayed. Once you have chosen your file, click the ""Upload"" button.
- Link to a photo from a URL: If there is a photo on the Web you want to feature alongside an item, please leave the URL for the photo in the blank marked ""From a Web URL"" and click ""Upload."" You must link to a photo directly (typically the URL will end with a file type, such as .jpg or .png) for it to show up; just linking to a blog post that includes the image will not work.
- Select from our image library: Within the image menu you will see a variety of photo options with the option to scroll for more results. Clicking the ""Select"" button underneath any of these photos will automatically attach it to your item.
REMEMBER, ONLY POST PHOTOS TO RANKER TO WHICH YOU OWN THE RIGHTS or that are licensed for use by Creative Commons. Ranker does not permit copyright violations on the site. - 4
Add Videos
Whether you're making a list about famous people, movies, music, or anything else, pretty much any discussion can be enhanced by video examples.
Adding video is very similar to adding images. Just look for the "+ADD" button and select "A video" from the drop-down menu that appears.
This will bring up a menu very much like the one for images. You don't need to hunt down an embed code or anything. A box appears allowing you to search through videos available from YouTube, view them and consider which one you want to include on that item. Just click on the video frame to view it, and when you find the one you want, click the "Select" button underneath. - 5
