  1. 1
    Neal Stephenson
    1995
Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Cyberpunk, Postcyberpunk More

Everybody has that piece of art that spoke to them at a formative moment. Diamond Age has actually been that for me at more than one age. To me this is the book where Stephenson's hitting on all cylinders: mind-blowing ideas and images by the bushel plus emotional depth.
  2. 2
    Frank Herbert
    1965
Fiction, Philosophy, Science Fiction, Military science fiction, Planetary romance More
    10
The book all other science fiction should be compared to. I've yet to see world building as effective as this anywhere else - Tolkien included.
  3. 3
    William Gibson
    1984-07-01
Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Dystopia, Cyberpunk
    9.6
Should be required reading for anyone who likes sci fi. Turns the whole genre on its ear.
  4. 4
    Vernor Vinge
Fantasy, Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Hard science fiction More
    9.4
Vinge really hit a home run here. Everything he's trying to achieve, he nails. No writer has done more to try to document human life in the shadow of super-intelligent beings, and this is the book of his I'd point to if you're only going to read just one of his.
  5. 5
    J. K. Rowling
    2000-07-08
    Speculative fiction
    9.3
I unabashedly love the Harry Potter books. Still, tough to pit a single one of those books against great standalone novels.
  6. 6
    Orson Scott Card
    1986
Fantasy, Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction
    9.1
The rare sequel that exceeds the original. Something that's really only possible when the author attempts something very different than before.
  7. 7
    Robert A. Heinlein
    1961-06-01
    Fiction, Science Fiction
    9.0
Heinlein's a very impressive writer. Easy to see why he's as honored as he is, but I've only read the two books here.
  8. 8
    Robert A. Heinlein
    1966
    Fantasy, Fiction, Science Fiction
    8.9
  9. 9

    Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

    Susanna Clarke
    2004-09-08
Fantasy, Speculative fiction, Historical novel, Alternate history
  10. 10
    Connie Willis
    1992
Novel, Science Fiction, Time travel, Speculative fiction
    8.3
  11. 11
    Neil Gaiman
    2001
Fantasy, Novel, Fiction, Children's literature, Science Fiction, Horror, Speculative fiction More
    8.2
I love me some Gaiman. My favorite of his work though is in the Sandman series.
  12. 12
    Orson Scott Card
    Fiction, Science Fiction
    8.0
I've got some history with this one. Loved it when I first read it - still good - but the supergenius kid stuff bugs me more now. Particularly the subplot with the siblings.
  13. 13

    Foundation's Edge

    Isaac Asimov
    1982-06
    Novel, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction
    7.7
Love Asimov, love the Foundation series. This book continues the series admirably, but it still doesn't have the same impact as the original trilogy for me.
  14. 14
    David Brin
    1983
Novel, Fiction, Children's literature, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction More
    7.5
  15. 15
    Vernor Vinge
    1999-03
Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Hard science fiction
    7.2
The book is well done. I really do fundamentally object to the usage of the character of Pham Nuwen here though. Don't want to say more, other than - Read "A Fire Upon the Deep".
  16. 16
    Philip K. Dick
    1962-01-01
Fantasy, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction, Alternate history, Dystopia More
    7.0
  17. 17
    Vernor Vinge
    2006-05-16
    Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction
    6.6
  18. 18

    The Uplift War

    David Brin
    1987
Novel, Fiction, Science Fiction, Speculative fiction
    6.1
I have a real tough time seeing with the opinion that a continuing series is producing the best work from a genre in a given year. Could have leveled this criticisms in a few places on this list, but this is the sequel with the least charm for me.
