John Cougar Mellencamp - John's Classic Music

List Criteria: All songs with lyrics written or co/written by John Cougar Mellencamp

John Cougar Mellencamp has had an interesting career. Encouraged by his management team to call himself John Cougar, reluctant and unable to completely commit to this plan, John worked hard and his musical talent and songwriting ability earned him some early success! As his management team continued to use him ineffectively and inappropriately, rebellion, especially in his song lyrics: YOUR NAME, IT MEANS NOTHING! AND THE DREAMS THAT WE LIVE?/ GONNA MAKE ME A BIG STAR, OR HAVEN'T YOU HEARD? AND IF IT'S JUST MY NAME, WELL, HELL, I CAN CHANGE IT! AND IF IT'S FOR THE FAME, I GUESS I BETTER GRAB IT FAST!/ and friction led to an early completed album not even being released!
His record company did believe in Cougar as a songwriter, and he did allow Pat Benetar to record "I NEED A LOVER" but John wanted to keep his songs for himself! John believed in himself as an entertainer even more than his company did. He continued to work hard and as his performing experience increased, his great songwriting talent continued to blossom!
With the release of AMERICAN FOOL a new American super-star was born! John Cougar had, and continued to develop a unique sound. Adding a country sound to his rock-and-roll success, his music was soon to be classified as Heartland Rock! John's lyrics and music did the talking as he dealt with the corruption of the American Dream, the heartlessness of Big Business, racism, and the plight of the common man! And sometimes with sex, love, rock-and-roll and having fun! John Mellencamp now classifies himself as a folk singer.
Cougar co-founded FARM AID in 1985 in order to bring help to, and focus on, the plight of the great American farmer and working man. A cause he is still involved with to this day! A cause which is unfortunately needed now more than ever!
John Cougar Mellencamp's commercial success kept him at the top of the charts for twenty years He has had twenty-two TOP 40 hits including ten in the TOP TEN! Suprisingly, only one, JACK AND DIANE reached #1!
