First I would like to start off by saying thank you to all the companies that look away from what the criminal history records show. I respect those employers, because ex-felons only want to start off fresh but it is really difficult when employers judge by past actions. Good luck to all those looking for a job with a record.

Furthermore, the economy is CRAP right now guys and even people without felonies are NOT getting jobs. I read an article about felons getting jobs and they did the following, in order to get a job:

    1. on your resume, you need to list that you are from out of town, preferrably another county, at least 6 counties away from the county(you were convicted in) or another state altogether.
When employers do background checks, they will check the county you last lived in and three surrounding counties (tri-search) Do not list any past jobs or schools that are located in the county that you were convicted as it is those counties where they do a background check. For example, if you live in northern california and were convicted in northern california, you want to say that you are from southern california and you just moved to the area. With that, on your resume, you want to list jobs that are located in southern california (far far away from the county you were convicted in). Ideally, you can say you were self employed in "southern california" for a majority of those years, so that they have no way of verifying employment. You can even add in a few companies where you "worked" and give a valid address, just state that the company was in business, but it has since CLOSED down. If you actually know of a real business that closed down, that is even better!! As far as education, state that you also went to high school in southern california (FAR AWAY FROM THE COUNTY WHERE YOU WERE CONVICTED,) and give the address of the high school on your master application. Most employers wont request a high school diploma transcript. They usually only verify for bachelors and masters degrees where the pay is high, and is based on an education.
    So understand this:
employers will do background checks in the counties that YOU tell them you used to work, live or went to school at. So therefeore, if you want to avoid being jobless and homeless, make it all up!!
I dont recommend doing any of this stuff as it is lying and probably illegal to falsify things on a resume. Now if you are going to be fingerprinted for a state or government job, DO NOT lie as they can charge you.

Hello, u have to lie on your resume if you want a job. DO NOT say that you have a felony!!!

List Of Companies That Hire Felons at 5/07/2012 9:58 PM
That is not a smart idea to tell an employer you dont have a past record. That is a very poor idea you are giving those out there that have hope. Yes you may get hired but once they complete all background checks and find out you lied. You will automatically get terminated. Be honest, tell them you were arrested and your trying to make a change a positive change in your life and you want a chance to prove to yourself and others you can make it. It may not happen all at once people like when your honest and be sincere when you talk in an interview and never give up but do not lie and say you were never arrested nor have a past record that shows poor judgement on your side. GOOD LUCK

Wow...this comment section just lowered my hopes more...lol. I have 3 felonies due to an addiction I had. Two possession charges and one retail theft. I have been clean for a year and a half (incl. alcohol) and am on probation for 5 years. I am in Illinois and have taken classes through probation that help slightly in connecting you with people who help felons get jobs (also took care of 100 hrs of the 150 hrs of comm. serv. I had).

Anyways...I received a job through a temp company that I thought might be a scam cuz they wanted workers immediately...I had to sign 2 quick forms-one stating I wasn't doing drugs (I told him no problem) and one stating I had no felony convictions...this one may be a prob I said...he said they'd give me a chance. THATS ALL I NEEDED! I worked 3 months on an amazing temp job at a school just down the street (perfect seeing as my beautiful car was repossessed and bus runs right there). Afterwards I was given amazing references and was suggested to the Dean of the school to manage a project with others placed underneath me! I was interviewed and my resume is amazing....I have years of administrative work experience, my AA degree and great references...I never heard back from them. :O( Heartbroken as this would have been a management job paying $20/hr and lasting a year or more with chance of permanent position in my own newly created dpt. Unfortunately, THIS IS A SCHOOL. Not only a school but a school for children-special education children.

That was my first REAL job not hustling in maybe 5 yrs or more. I was so thrilled and because of my background I made sure I showed them I was worth the hire (i.e. worked rigorously skipping lunches, breaks, coming in early, going above and beyond, displaying knowledge pertaining to the job at hand, trained on new scanning hardware and software and even training others on the software. Devastated that I haven't heard back from them....Regardless, that job ended Jan 27th and it's now a fewmonths later with constant daily applications and interviews...STILL NOTHING!!! The company hired me to do the job through this temp agency I explained my whole past briefly and they offered me a job at their own company as I had proved myself worthy however we both agreed it wouldn't be fiscally worth it because of the amount paid and how far I'd be commuting daily.

Ok...I am blabbing...but I really appreciated this whole section and everyone's comments. I stopped being honest on applications now to try soimething new since my honesty isn't helping me....Still nothing but worth a try. If they find out after hiring at least I might get a couple weeks of work? Might be embarasssing when the felonies come up but perhaps I could explain I had thought a lawyer I paid sealed them but obviously they didn't but I am more than willing to speak about them...maybe they'll still give me a chance after having seen me work?

I know this was a long comment...I'll keep it short next time...Just venting I guess...I owe the courts over 5,000 restitution of 1,000+ which I have slowly paid over half...but I have to live too! I had an addiction and made my mistakes...I don't expect anyone to understand or sympathize but DAMN! Bond me or something and take a chance! Illinois offers employment bonding for those with convictions and it costs them nothing. It's a quick phone call and then they are covered if they experience any problems or loss due to me...Damn I need help. I am 31 years old...I really need job help

Good luck everyone. I liked this comments section and I like snag-a-jobs blogs and exfelongirls blogs also.

guys I know first hand about being discriminated against because of a past felony, its like they want you to go back to jail, then complain that convicts are in and out of jail. doesnt make any sense to me. I found an opportunity, if you guys are looking to start your own internet based business, its free to start, go to www.exconopportunity.info dont be afraid to be successful. these people could care less about your backround..

There are jobs available. I have a drug conspiracy felony and I am working three jobs right now (felony is only 2 years old). One of them I work from home typing notes and editing documents for $10.00 per hour. The other I started as an intern making $10.00 per hour, I was just recently offered a permanent part-time position making $15.00 per hour with full benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401-, life, disability, and FSA) for 25 hrs per week (I have only been here for a year). The other position I work in HR at 15 hrs per week making $16.00 per hour with PTO -vacation and sick and other perks. Starting from the bottom may not be an option for a lot of you, but it will get your foot in the door. Two of my positions required reference checks only. And the other company did no checks (reference or background). There are some companies that are just more forgiving. When I got in the situation. I thought my life was over, but have faith and hang in there.

I'm applying at Target right now for a management position. I have pending felony charges for something right now stemming from a previous job 4 years ago. My lawyer states it could take another 6 months to resolve.
Will the Target background check questionnaire ask if anything is "pending." Would they see it anyways? I haven't been convicted yet.

My initial reaction was one of disbelief and a little harsh for the list of companies hiring felons...as another commenter posted his story, I do agree with the fact that you can't expect someone to help you in any given situation as far as corporate hiring is concerned...be the best you can and don't worry about the negativity...I for one have college degree and many years work experience haven't been able to find a job the last couple of years that have lasted...must be a reversal of fortunes at work...possibly the next four years will result in greater job growth...i would look into self employment opportunities...maybe mechanics, forklift operators, etc. I myself have a notion where I am ultimately looking to invest and purchase a business...best regards...and best of luck...right there with you...

I completely understand and agree with Caitlan. Here are your options: create a business of your own, work for a small business that doesn't do background checks(sadly it's usually labor intensive i.e.waitress, construction..) and almost impossible to find, or take the gamble and get a new identity. I have a non-violent felony from 10 years ago, served no jail time, only probabtion/fines, have superior education(2 college degrees, 1 with honors), great references etc... No one will even consider me. Don't waste your time thinking a job site, more education, ect is going to change things; it's not. I have supported myself by waitressing for the past 10 years and can no longer do that as a result of an injury. I am 45 and have no 401K, no financial security in site. Don't waste years of your life struggling to survive and hoping for a miracle; it's not going to happen. Even at this age, I am willing to change my identity in order to have the life that I deserve! Caitlan, please contact me.

Its not always about bad choises, sometimes a person is a victim themselves and because they were convicted of a crime they did not commit they pay the price right a long with those that did. My soon to be husband has spent 25 years of a life sentence for a crime he did not commit..he has spent half his life paying for someone elses mistake. Even the court said he didnt do it but because he was there at the time he was sentenced also..the other guy confessed but the court said he provided the means for the crime to be commited so he was quilty too..its very unfair for people to judge others before they have had a chance to walk in their shoes...only God has the right to judge.not you..

Where do these sort of lists come from? There are absolutely no companies who hire felons, i.e. NONE. Someone suggested a temp agency. A temporary agency will disqualify you once they find out you have a record. There are a lot of people offering false hope and calling themselves "career counselors" or vocational rehabilitation. It is all b.s. There is nothing they can do for someone with a felony except get themselves paid by the government.

I know of someone convicted of welfare fraud that works for Suntrust. She got in as a temp and they liked her work so they hired her for full time permanent work. I do not know if she is just and exception to the rule or what. But I have a misdemeanor and two college degrees and Suntrust will not even interview me. and the misdemeanor is for trespassing. I use xamire.com to find jobs that will hire me - a person with 5!!! felonies (some are violent) and got a job through one of their listings in my city. I tried walmart, but the person told me that walmart personally doesn't say no to felons, it's up to the person doing the hiring, and she just wasn't comfortable with it, which I had to act like I understood (even though im mad) but nevertheless, I got hired at some place better.

Attn: Copeland -I never thought very highly of someone who get arrested but recently I had a change of heart when my own family member got arrested for stealing money from a company. She tried paying it back but they caught her at the end. Since then, I believe that sometimes people do things without thinking and no one really knows what goes through someones mind. I dont think they are bad people they are just people that made a mistake in life. I tell her not to give up and in life we all make mistakes because is true. In one way or another will it be in law, relationships, jobs, etc we all make mistakes. So as I tell her not to give up, YOU DONT GIVE UP. So continue applying, continue to be honest with people and let them know you made a mistake and you paid your dues and you want a chance to show you can do better for yourself and admit to people what you did. People like when you admit to them when you did wrong and you will feel better. So do not give up in applying places. Try to see about getting a job working from home. Try going to school and apply for medical transcription courses and work from home. Customer service work and work from home. That is a start in the right direction. GOOD LUCK

      Hi there, James

My suggestions to your question...hope they help slightly? I was never incarcerated but did have to start somewhere with where to live and at least get food each month. I started in halfway houses and an oxford house then moved on to a place called F.I.S.T. which stands for "Fellow Inmates Striving Together". This at least got me on my feet with others in my own p[osition. I also applied for my LINK card (food stamps) and receive $200/mo. I couldn't and didn't want to go back home with my family and couldn't get into an apartment with no money and my background...This is at least a start for somewhere to live and get going on creating a new life...not sure about other states but P.O.s (parole/probations offices often have great suggestions also). Good luck and God Bless!

You can use www.xamire.com. It's a listing of employers and jobs in your city that hire felons. I've actually landed a job through their listing, and they really only post ones that will hire felons. They're new still though, and not every city has many listings, but hopefully people will help more that they've been on the news in many cities.

My husband has been out of prison for 2 yrs and served 10 1/2 years on a drug charge.and He has had a few interviews from Factories to Long John Silver and with hopes of getting these jobs unfortunately they passed him up but he has worked temporary jobs when they call but its off and on and he goes when they call. We live in Champaign/Urbana Rantoul Illinois area. I have 2 jobs to support our family and I thank God for that but my husband also had a cornea transplant last year with another one to follow after the first eye heals. He has the desire to work to take some of the burden off me. If anyone has advice to where he can look please respond. Thanks

My husband is just on probation for 2 counts of burglary & can not get a job. He was a successful Chief Technology Officer of a with-holding company that imports a pop**ar Japaneses vehicle, (I am not @ will to mention the name of the manufacturer-I don't need a law suite) he had 3,000 (yes) 3,000 employees under him. He lost his job 8 years ago due to budget cuts, & has not had a job since then. I've lost not only a lifestyle, homes, cars, college education for my 2 children, 1 graduated & 1 to graduate in 2012. But my siblings cut me off, they think my husband is being a bum and not looking for employment. No one that is in this situation will ever fathom what it is like to look for employment & never get a response back for years @ a time. Then we have probation up our ass wanting monthly payments or his probation will be revoked. We survive on my $14 an hour job if you want to call that surviving. Toys R Us won't even hire him to assemble bikes for Christmas. This is insane. He can't even get a job doing manual labor landscaping, you have to be bilingual these days, or so that is the answer they have come up with not to hire someone with a record. There is no light @ the end of the tunnel, he just wants a job, any job, he wants to feel productive and earn money again. Thanks for reading. Thanks for posting your thoughts so I know I'm not alone, he is not alone, & we are not alone in this discriminating world. Good luck to all.

List Of Companies That Hire Felons at 11/18/2011 2:17 AM
Most of these companies will not hire a convicted felon. Whoever made up this list did not call these companies to see if they have a policy against hiring felons. I have personally been to Walmart, McDonalds, Wendys, Arbys, Burger King, Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes, K-Mart, Kroger and many on this list only to be turned down because I committed Vehicular Homicide 17 years ago. The only people that will hire a convicted felon are small businesses and even then you may still have a problem with them. I have been laid off now since July 1, 2009 and have put in 10,000 resumes and have only received about 11 responses and out of those 11 responses I was told " Were sorry but we don't hire convicted felons". I believe the system has set up convicted felons to fail when they get out of prison so that they will return back to prison. The Federal government pay's Georgia $90.00 per day for every inmate that is in prison. I have the new clippings to prove this. The Ga prison system is a multi million dollar industry. Ex convicts need to band together at the White House and protest against the discrimination the companies are imposing on them. Every crime should be looked at when a person applies for a job. The nature, circumstances, the time the offense was committed, how long the person has been out of prison and other factors should be taken into account before the door is slammed.

You know, you're right. Ex felons DO need to stand together, but the pfoblem is they WON"T. Most of them are only strong when they are in a gang or use a gun. I served 10 yrs for 2 counts of robbery (purse snatching) and have been out for almost 6 yrs but no one; employers, society and certainly NOT the government gives a damn about whether or not you have been rehabilitated.

Mr. Andrews, My name is Rodger and i am from Florida. Like Ga., The Florida prison system is a multi-million dollar industry. Its the largest money generating machine above tourism. sad right. Since my release the only job i have had is Hooters. Once Hooters found out i was going to school for paralegal studies they diminished my hours to the point where the debt income ration was lopsided. I have submitted over 200 resumes and over 80 applications. The school i go to only knows how to take , take ,take. Yet they wont give an inch. What was really sad is i spoke to an ex-district judge asking him if a convicted felon could be hired as a paralegal. He says come to school and get your certificate and i will get you a job. Well, because i was a certified law clerk in prison, the legal portion was fairly easy. I earned a GPA of 3.8. I did everything i said i would do in those classes. I drove an hour and a half to school in hopes this judge would get me a job. He doesn't return my calls or emails. Moreover, every time i inquired about it he always sang the same song and dance. When a person commits a crime and pays his debt to society, for some reason society seems to extract an additional punishment from that individual. Consequently, the second punishment seems to last for the remainder of that persons life. Its damn sure not fair. No matter what the person does in an attempt to better themselves, its not good enough because society will only remember you for what you've done. A crime is what you did, but it does not define who you are. Some of the best talent in the world is sitting behind the fence. Society seems to write these people off. Just like people who are sick and infirm, society wishes to do away with them as well as convicted felons. They don't want us to better ourselves because they ,make more money off us when we are behind the fence. This does not help the unemployment problem, if anything it contributes to it. All the advertisements concerning temp agencies are all a crock. I've utilized one so much they asked me to upgrade my account, and pay so employers will see my resume first. What a crock. This is why recidivism is so damn high. Moreover all the ads one may see who may be hiring, that's a crock too. The government pays companies to post job openings when really there isn't. I am out of options. Any comments/

Come to http://www.xamire.com The Felony Friendly Employer Listing & Community!

We're trying to build the worlds first felony friendly network, with employer listings per state / city, as well as forums, community, answers (like yahoo answers) and more, just for you! Help us build this project up into something that can help millions throughout America!

We are currently working on a reward system for everything you do on http://www.xamire.com which includes items, and possibly cash prizes. Currently as a community member, every time you partic**ate in helping, or getting help, you will accumulate points you can use, at a later date.

We offer blogging as well, with your own ads, and your own adsense ad inside your profile as well. This can help give you a bit of income each month (albeit not a lot, unless you write quite a bit) but it can still help.

We are continually working on ways to help you out, and help you succeed! We are new though, and need to spread the word, and get more people involved.

Its a jacked up situation but also reality: society isn't very forgiving for those of us who've racked up jail records. Your best option is to rely on your own resources and create your own business. You don't need any special degree to go to work for yourself. I used to burglarize houses years ago. So I flipped that knowledge into a business where I consulted homeowners on how to burglar-proof their homes. And they know I knew my stuff; I had the record to prove it! A simple business license from the county, some free biz cards from Vista Print, and a free ad on Craigslist did the trick. I went from an inmate to biz owner overnight. Use what God gave you, and use your life experience. All it takes is a little ingenuity and a made up mind to succeed. Bunk getting discouraged! Discouragement is for sissies!

This is so pathetic reading what these strong black men have to say, still begging Massa to take care of them instead of using this forum to network and maybe crunch ideals to star your own business. when you get your GR check what do you do with it, buy some weed some liquor? there are bothers I see investing in car polish and equipment to detail cars. if you get good enough, that's 2hrs work or less at $80.00 per car do the math 40.00 an hr

This is just one suggestion but I know it takes effort on your part so it's a wash right.

Lol please!....you have no idea what the hell you are talking about.. And obviously need to go back to school to learn more grammar and English. I don't understand why you need to put your f*cking opinion here when this site that has nothing to do with you! You were probably that kid that was picked on or bullied a lot when you were young and now you have some type of brass balls to stand up against people hiding behind a computer screen. Lmao! You're the type of people in society that WE label as "sad, pathetic, and a dumbass!" its just because you probably have no life and are stuck at home with nothing but you're deplorable, petty computer screen as your means of communication to entertain your empty, sterile life. Why don't you Google EHarmony and get yourself laid. Maybe that'll motivate you to get a life!... And a job because your on here! Good luck and God bless your soul to be cleansed!

You guys kill me, Life is about choices whether you are young or old and you made yours I was young just as many of you were and I knew what was right or wrong just like you did. most of you decided long ago that you were not going to follow the rules and now you are paying for your mistakes. heaven and hell? sorry to inform you that they are both here. Just like Satan you have been cast out because of your crimes against society and we don't want you. Being your next victim as I read earlier, go ahead, the next time we catch you maybe you will kill someone and then you'll be be just where we want you executed or life in prison either way you will be put out your misery. When I think of all the people that struggled to make away working two or more jobs to support their families and now reading your cry baby whines discuss me. You are all losers and deserve whatever you get. The reason no one wants to hire you is because no one will feel comfortable supervising you knowing your past, where you see yourself as normal, we see you as sick and can't be trusted.

In the state of Virginia, anyone can go to a magistrate and take out charges against a person. People do it all the time when they are mad at you such as a girlfriend or boyfriend or ex wife/husband or friend. Virginia makes it very easy to have a person arrested. People then go into court and lie to help get you convicted. It is not always about choices. A friend called me a name and I called him a name back and he took out false charges and paid a white woman who worked for him to come into court and support him I was then convicted of trespassing and now cannot find a job even though I have two college degrees-a bachelor's and masters. IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE CHOICES WE MAKE BUT THE EVIL OF PEOPLE

Si I'm guessing even though you know right from wrong, you've never made a mistake or a bad choice huh? If thata the case then you're not Human... And for that fact as an employer I wouldn't won't to hire you with a mind setvluje that towards people ! Don't you get it? They post these companies with a link. You click on a link and they get some money. So many felons looking for work and they keep clicking away, while some other jack-ass gets paid. Do you really thin an airline will hire a felon? Do you know to work at an airport you have to be screened by homeland security. No felons are working for an airline or car rental company at an airport!

I went to an interview. The lady had a packett of questions... at the bottom of the first page she asked did I have any felony or misdemeanor convictions or charges. I answered yes. Then she thanked me for coming and said there were no more positions for the season and that I could apply next season. There was a line of applicants in the waiting area who would be interviewing after me. Kmart automatically schedules interviews when you apply online.

Aon Corp. at 7/05/2011 8:50 PM
Aon's policy is to do a 10 year background check, or less up to applicable by law. The final hiring decision is based on severity, length of time since conviction, and relevance pertaining to the applied position. They also take into account how the individual has attempted to improve, and what accomplishments have been made. For example going back to college and getting a bachelors degree. Being upfront and honest about your past history also helps. How do I know all these things help? Because I'm a felon and I did all these things and they gave me a chance and a awesome job.

I got offered a job at the Walmart in Howell NJ & they sent me for drug test which I passed & at time of the interview I disclosed that I had a conviction many years ago & they said it wouldnt be a problem I waited weeks & kept checking in with the manager at the store he kept telling me my background check was still pending well i got in the mail a letter from the background company that Walmart uses & they said I passed everything accept criminal background now I disclosed that felony at time of interview now mind you that felony dates back to original arrest date was 1989 & when case got finally into court it was in 1997 now I did dispute the report from the background company & they did a investigation & about 2 weeks later I got a letter stating that my offer for the job was taken back , I called corprate office of Walmart I spoke to a women named Michael & I explained that I disclosed that info at time of interview she said that she would handel it,she called me back and said she cleared me for employment, then 30minutes later she called me back & appoligized but she can not clear me foe employment in other words they really messed with my head & gave me the run around. I thought that as long as your felony dates back more then 7yrs that I can get hired & on top of that she telling me that im very close to the time frame that I could be hired but can not disclose hoe much time must past . really think that Walmaart is not a fair employer & I have a friend who works at Walmart and had a felony distrubution charge dated back from2004 and she got hired !!!!! If anyone has any sugestions on if there is anything legal I can do , If I can get a lawyer to file a disgrimination charge against them ????

They do hire a person with a felony. It iwould have to be one that does not require a security clearence and a non violent crime. Basically one that is explainable. Certian jobs like assembly or inspection is an available job. Also, they find expierence more valuable then education but with take a person with either or both. For felons, its a start i the right direction. Do not lie on the application about your background because they will find out anyways and you will not be able to get it based on dishonesty. Good luck!!!

I once worked for boeing in Everett Washington for 1 year. Had a car accident and decided to take a voluntary termination. In other words i quit the job. During the time after I was convicted of a class c felony drug related. It was the my first time ever in jail and my only time. I was told that I could re-apply after 3 years. After the 3 years were up i contacted Boeing to get my rehire indicator status. I was blatantly told that I would never be considered for re-hire for any position with the Boeing Co. ever again. And that there would be no possibility for them to reverse this decision. I was a model employee when i worked for them. I was a team leader, 5s and tool focal for my section. So i would pretty much conclude my one mistake is the reason they will never consider hiring me again.

I was hired by Wal-mart 2 years ago with a felony, after the background check. They only hire certain types of felons, however. You cannot have a violent crime, a distribution crime, or a theft crime. The supposed policy that if a felony is at least 7 years old they will not find it is hit and miss. If they do not hire you for an older felony, they may also be using it as an excuse to not hire you.

I agree that it is the company's perogative to except or deny the application of a felon. Nevertheless, I do not feel it is fair to discriminate against felons by not even giving the opportunity to someone convicted of a not so serious crime years ago that is unrelated to interfering with the job itself. I mean, there are people that were convicted during adolescence yet can not get a job as an adult and provide for children they now have themselves. I just feel that it is unfair to assume that because a person done something once they will do it again...EVERYONE CAN CHANGE...and some people actually do...and to talk about those that were inocent of the crime they were convicted of and how it is ruining chances for employment is another issue. I feel that the opportunity should be given to all with certain considerations such as time crime occured, record since crime, skills and abilities related to employment, etc.

Did walksh2o know that cyber bullying can be considered a computer crime. And could be prosecuted federally? especially if it were to lead to someone doing something like committing suicide or something. wouldn't that be ironic...

Sure would! But in sure they would just be ecstatic about that seeing that they have such hate towards people who they know nothing about! Just sad. :(

Filled out application and was interviewed at Avis in Austin TX. I was told they WOULD NOT consider me because of my criminal history, even a non-violen, non-drug related charge.
