Martin Scorsese's Top 85 Must-See Films

A list of 85 important films as chosen by director Martin Scorsese during an interview with Fast Company magazine. In December of 2011, a lengthy discussion between Scorsese and reporter Rick Tetzeli of Fast Company touched on a number of topics relating to Scorsese's long career in filmmaking, and particularly his Oscar-nominated 2011 release "Hugo." Over the course of the discussion, Scorsese frequently brought up examples of classic movies that he thinks all students of filmmaking should watch to better understand the medium. This list collects all those referenced movies in one place, as a basic guide to Martin Scorsese's favorite or most essential pieces of film art. Vote for your favorite Martin Scorsese film of all time here.

The list includes a number of well-known films from famous directors. Billy Wilder's satirical "Ace in the Hole," Visconti's epic "The Leopard" (which Scorsese calls one of the best movies ever made), John Ford's groundbreaking Western "Stagecoach" and Sam Fuller's edgy "Shock Corridor." The list also includes a number of films that are relatively underappreciated, many of which Scorsese has previously drawn attention to in interviews and documentary films. These include the John Garfield noir "Force of Evil," Powell and Pressburger's "A Matter of Life and Death" and the often-overlooked Vincent Minnelli melodrama "Some Came Running" with Frank Sinatra in a non-musical role.
