While heavy metal
is a decidedly more modern style of music - let's say from late '60s with acts like Black Sabbath and even Led Zeppelin serving as the forefathers of the genre - the imagery that surrounds metal has certainly been around for a long, long time. For hundreds of years, there have been artists creating bad ass paintings, later adopted by metal bands to depict the darkness, depravity, Satanism, and gore represented in their musical style and lyrics - artists like Gustave Dore, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, William Blake, Caravaggio, and Hieronymus Bosch.
In some instances, metal artists have even directly used these works of art for their album covers
, such as Celtic Frost adorning their LP To Mega Therion
with H.R. Giger's 'Satan I,' and Acid Bath, who used a "self-portrait" painted by serial killer John Wayne Gacy for their album When the Kite String Pops.
So take a look at the metal paintings below, from some of the most macabre minds of the past several hundred years. Here are 15 of the most metal works of art of all time... Collection Photo: user uploaded image
