Mormon Politicians
List of notable or famous Mormon politicians. These Mormon leaders and government employees are all members in good standing of the Church of Latter Day Saints, and are considered practicing Mormons. In 2012, Mormon politicians received a lot of attention, as not 1 but two former Mormon elected officials - Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman - participated in the Republican Primary. (Huntsman dropped out of the race after a poor showing in some key early battleground states, and eventually endorsed Romney for the nomination.) Huntsman had been the governor of Utah and Romney had been governor of Massachusetts and a candidate for the GOP nomination in 2008. Romney's father, George Romney, was also a Mormon and a politician, serving as Governor of Michigan in the 1960s.
Though most Mormons in representative government were elected in the United States, where Mormonism was born, there are a number of Mormons who hold elected positions in other countries as well. All are included on this list, such as Moroni Bing Torgan of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies and Keiko Itokazu of the Japanese Diet.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (sometimes known simply as the LDS Church or the Mormon Church) is the largest denomination in the "Latter Day Saint Movement" inspired by the message of Joseph Smith. The church currently claims 14.1 million adherents around the world, with 50,000 missionaries currently serving worldwide. The church models its teachings and organizations on Joseph Smith's original Church of Christ, founded in 1830.
