Most Powerful Female Octogenerians 2009
My Grandmere (she's from France, hence the French translation of Grandmother) once told me "I don't know why people worry about getting older, if you weren't getting older you'd be dead". This from a woman who swam and rode her bike every day until recent years when her physical and mental health began to go downhill. She still swims, and uses a stationary bike. She and these women are still pretty kick ass for being over 80. It gives me something to look forward too...although I'm more looking forward to taking 5 naps a day and drinking wine for breakfast.

Baba WaWa is still considered one of the most powerful women in media. At the age of 80 she is still executive producer and co-host of The View and published a best selling memoir, Audition. She is also one of my favorite celebrity impressions on SNL, done wonderfully by my heroine, Gilda Radner and Cheri Oteri and Rachel Dratch (watch the 30 Rock episode where Jenna is interviewed by Barbara Walters for her work in 'The Rural Juror') - 2
Louise Bourgeois designed the bronze and steel monument, Maman, a sculpture that paid homage to her mother after she was 80. At the age of 97, she has been the subject of a documentary film and a major touring retrospective. - 3
I hope I'm still writing when I'm 81. My lists will be about how I don't understand the kids today and various ways to yell at kids to get off my lawn. Mary Higgins Clark is a suspense and mystery writer having sold over 100 million copies in the U.S. In April of 2009 she released 'Just Take My Heart' which reached the best seller list. - 4
Liz Smith
Gossip Columnist and co-founder of wowowow.com, a website for older women. She is a contributing editor for Parade magazine and writes several times a week for publications such as Variety and The Chicago Tribune. She was fired from The New York Post in February after 14 years. She is 86 years old. - 5
You often hear that comedy is a young person's game, and then you see Cloris Leachman on the Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget and you know that's absolutely bogus. Leachman is an oscar and emmy winning comedian, best known for her work on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Since turning 80, she has competed on Dancing With the Stars, roasted Bob Saget and published a memoir, "Cloris". She is 83 years old.
