Ancient Rome at its most grotesque. Malcolm McDowell is a tour de force in what many consider to be the most contreversial role of his lifetime. Yes, this Felini-esque epic was produced by Penthouse International. And no, it is not a porn, though the fact that every sex act is real rather than simulated certainly sets the film apart from anything else we've ever seen. Roger Ebert gave Caligula zero stars and described it (I kid you not): ""sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash."" Unlike Satyricon, Caligula gives us a lesson in history. Perhaps Ebert should study up; life under Ceasar's reign was no picnic, least of all for Ceasar himself. -

Kubrick's best work. Beethoven, ultra-violence and space-age fashion reign supreme in this artsy interpretation of the book by Anthony Burgess. Also staring Malcolm McDowell (see Caligula, #1 above). Though the film is near devoid of the philosophy and politics which made the book famous, it was nonetheless one of the most influential and contreversial creations of the 1960s.
