My Coachella 2012
Coachella 2012 was easily one of the greatest weekends of my life. Here is a ranked list of the acts I saw, ranked. From the mind-blowing sounds of the third time I've ever seen Radiohead, to the surprisingly amazing set from 17-year old French kid Madeon, to the severely underwhelming Florence + The Machine.
- 1Alternative rock, Progressive rock, Electronic music More#1 on the ultimate list“ I'm enough of a Radiohead nerd to have scoped out their tour's setlists beforehand, so I was very ready to not hear the "Rock Band" Radiohead as much as the "Bleeps and Bloops" Radiohead. But they really did play a lot of new stuff. Mostly new stuff, actually, with Paranoid Android and Karma Police thrown in to get some of the non-fan audience back. There There was a fantastic surprise and everyone's head (especially mine) was going in all directions. A fantastic set where I came out liking songs I didn't know I liked. „
- 2Progressive rock, Heavy metal, Post-punk More#4 on the ultimate list“ Refused was one of the first hardcore bands I really liked. Since 1999/2000, I've been a huge fan, but growing up nobody had ever seen them live since they broke up in 1998. The set was exactly what I wanted and it was fantastic. „
- 3
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg
#8 on the ultimate list“ Every song they played was an absolute CLASSIC. Opening up with the greatest possible opener (The Next Episode), and bringing on people like 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, Warren G, Hologram Tupac and Eminem, it was easily the most unforgettable hip hop set I'll ever see. „ - 4
Madeon
#27 on the ultimate list“ This is a 17 year old french kid who knows his house like nobody's business. Above is the mash-up that went viral last year that put him on the map. „ - 5Punk rock, Indie rock, Art punk More#6 on the ultimate list“ They were surprisingly solid. I came out respecting all of these guys not only as musicians, but as performers. They really throw a party and play the hell out of their instruments. A rock solid and airtight band, which you really wouldn't expect just listening to the CDs. „
- 6Synthpop, Electronic music, New Wave More#14 on the ultimate list“ Another surprisingly air-tight band filled with a talented three piece in the front that switches instruments after almost any song. Definitely came out with more respect for this band after seeing what they were like live. „
- 7Electronic music, Dance music, Pop music More#26 on the ultimate list“ Girl Talk is the most artful pop music mashup artist out there. And every time you see him it is a god damn party. A non-stop god damn party. „
- 8
Jimmy Cliff and Tim Armstrong
#19 on the ultimate list“ This was nice to glance at while migrating from one thing to another. Tim Armstrong is ancient, but all those tattoos are forever. Sad I didn't get to go out there and join the few dozen people who were actually skanking. „ - 9Folk music, Folk rock, Indie rock More#3 on the ultimate list“ This was more of a watch-because-we-need-a-good-spot-for-Radiohead band, but I've started weeding through their catalogue and giving them a second chance was a damn good idea. „
- 10Alternative rock, Britpop, Post-punk More#5 on the ultimate list“ The lead singer is the ABSOLUTE f*cking MAN. He's one of the few people that really carry themselves like a true rock star. Their performance was pretty entertaining, and they played every song the crowd wanted closing, of course, with Common People. „
- 11Dubstep, House music, Trance music More#16 on the ultimate list“ Missing the first 20 minutes of this band was apparently the best decision I made, since most people burned themselves out really quickly on that first day. Their light show was unbelievable and they really filled up the field. You could feel their beats in your throat. „
- 12
Childish Gambino
#35 on the ultimate list“ Formerly hated this band. Now I don't. Amazing performance for what it was. „ - 13Electronic music, Alternative dance, House music More#30 on the ultimate list“ Had a Sophie's Choice to make between Justice and Girl Talk. Went with Girl Talk but saw the first 20 minutes of Justice and it sounded like they were doing a fine enough job mashing up their songs together, but I heard something was messed up in the set. If you know what it is, please post in the comments. „
- 14
Grouplove
Alternative rock, Alternative dance, Indie rock More#44 on the ultimate list“ Fantastic band. „ - 15Folk music, Pop rock, Indie rock More#22 on the ultimate list“ Not really a great experience here, but she played everything I wanted her to which was nice. „
- 16Neo soul#62 on the ultimate list“ A treat. „
- 17Folk rock, Jazz, Indie rock More#7 on the ultimate list“ Lots of newer stuff, but pulled it off incredibly well whistling in a scarf in the desert. „
- 18Alternative rock, Folk rock, Indie rock More#13 on the ultimate list“ Accidentally caught The Shins, and eh, they weren't bad. Just realized I know most of their songs from commercials. „
- 19Alternative rock, Pop rock, Soul music More#28 on the ultimate list“ Easily the most underwhelming band of the whole weekend. The band was great and the backups sounded perfect, but she neuters her songs by not singing out, making the CDs a much more intense and cacophonous experience than seeing her and her band live, unfortunately. It's kind of like when Bon Jovi doesn't sing the highest part of Livin on a Prayer. Just kind of ruins the best parts of the songs you love and makes them fall flat. „
- 20
Santigold
#58 on the ultimate list“ They did a fine job, I'm just not really into them. „ - 21
Wild Flag
Alternative rock, Post-punk, Indie rock#41 on the ultimate list“ They did a fine job, I'm just not really into them. „
