My Coachella 2012
Back from the desert. Here's what I saw, from best to worst - with one caveat that I won't pretend that context is sometimes more important than the artist themselves. The good I saw was really good, but the bad may not have been the artist's fault at all.

- 1When I first heard the Black Angels' drone sound a few years back, I immediately thought they'd be amazing live. After seeing them live, yup, they nailed it. Much more powerful live than in studio.BUY @ amazon

EMA
Pretty clearly my find of the show. She's the one I'm spending time now really getting her sound in my head. Her unpredictable vocals remind me of Bjork, and her bound's noise/shoegaze sound really compliments her well.BUY @ amazon - 3Not the religious experience it was for me seeing them back in 2009, but still very, very strong. No other new artist of the past few years has hit me like Beirut.BUY @ amazon
- 4Headliner material. No doubt about it. Epic voice that only seems to gain power as the stage gets bigger, and her songwriting has grown by leaps and bounds.BUY @ amazon

AWOLNATION
Awol (Aaron Bruno) was my personal quirky find of 2011. The song "Sail" is an absolute powerhouse, but in general the debut album is a bit too goofy and all over the place for me to rave too much about them. It's good work, and good to see an individual free himself from genre restrictions, but it's spotty. I wondered how they'd play live. Turns out, pretty good. Still a bit goofy, Bruno really plays with abandon. I don't know if I've ever seen an artist as who feel so heavy and light at the same time. He's a world class screamer whose not afraid to jump right in the crowd, but he's also downright chipper.BUY @ amazon
