A list of the richest non-profit charitable foundations in the world, ranked by the size of their endowment. Charitable foundations are an organization established to fund other charitable organizations or provide funds for their own charitable endeavors. In the United States, we have private foundations and public charities. Private foundations are generally funded by corporations and individuals, where as public charities are funded by money gathered from the general public. Originally many of these foundations were simply tax shelters, however, legislation over the last half century has been established to curtail this practice. The charitable foundations on this list are all, of course, the real thing.
