My opinion of course. These are the albums that have moved me, inspired me, and sound bloody good to go along with it all. Not in order of preference.

EDIT 8.9.2012 : I now believe that The Soft Bulletin should rank among these albums, having listened to it a good 5 or 6 times, and it's Mr Oizo that will make way. Sorry Quentin!

List Criteria: No greatest hits albums.

  1. The shift to a more abstract, electronic sound certainly doesn't detract from the emotion and beauty of this album; if anything, this album is Radiohead's most emotionally charged recording. Hearing the opening organs of Everything in Its Right Place still gives my the chills.

  2. The album that propelled Waters and co to stardom is also something of a cornerstone for progressive rock. With lyrical themes ranging from greed to insanity, and a faint heartbeat that underlies the entire album, this is still one of the most influential albums of all time, and certainly an all time great.

  3. Possibly the greatest album to ever grace popular music, Revolver showcases the Beatles at the height of their musical powers. Although maybe not as influential as Sgt Peppers, this album contains some of the greatest lyrics and music to ever emerge from the Beatles, and introduced a number of studio techniques that have since shaped popular music.

  4. Untrue - Burial

If there was ever proof that electronic music can be powerful and emotive, this is it. Burials famous chopped-up drum beats and RnB vocal sampling are paired with rising strings and bassy undertones to amazing effect here, and the more ambient efforts such as 'In McDonalds' are some of the most powerful songs on the album.

  5. Richard D. James Album - Aphex Twin

Having pioneered intelligent dance music (or IDM), Richard D. James is an influential force in dance music. This is his greatest work for me; from the harsh, skittering drum beats to the gentle strings, it is a bonkers and quickfire ride, lasting just over half an hour, but in songs like the opener 4 and Girl/Boy Song, it shows its beauty and delicate touch.
