A great basketball dunk can make for some of the greatest and most exciting sports highlights. The term "slam dunk" was originally coined by LA Lakers announcer Chick Hearn, and it has become such a staple of the game that now there's even an official Slam Dunk Contest held each year during the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Often, a truly inspired basketball play can make an individual into an Internet legend. That must have been what all these people were thinking. Unfortunately, as we'll see, it doesn't always turn out that way. This is a list of funny or embarrassing videos of basketball players trying to dunk, and failing, sometimes miserably.

Not Quite Above the Rim

Another halftime dunk contest, another guy launching himself directly into a basketball hoop face-first. Now, it's important to be able to see your target when you are attempting to slam dunk, but it's really not all that necessary to get your face all THAT CLOSE to the hoop. That's the mistake this person seems to be making. We know your moves are impressive, sir, but perhaps consider waiting to check them out on the TV replay later rather than trying to watch yourself dunk in real-time.

Dunking Over Ladies

Think of this as a public service message warning about the dangers of pointless showboating. On a public basketball court, a skilled amateur attempts a particularly impressive maneuver. He brings 4 (count 'em, four) ladies into the key, right in front of the hoop, and then attempts to leap OVER them, a la Evel Knievel (but thankfully without the motorcycle.)

Everything is pretty much going according to plan until his crotchal region slams directly into the face of the fourth girl in line. Both come crashing to the ground (though, to be fair, the ball DOES go in the basket). Both will likely talk about this with therapists in the years to come. I hope they get the help they're going to need...
