The Best Found Footage Movies By   [161 more lists]

""Found footage"" movies are films shot in POV, presented as being created accidentally, by people using video cameras in ""real life"" situations. These first-person films are fictional, but attempt to simulate reality, either in a ""mockumentary"" style or directly implying that the movie has been ""discovered"" somewhere and then distributed to viewers. The first-person gimmick is most often used in horror movies, as the heightened realism of watching ""amateur""-shot footage can enhance the tension and suspense.

Often, the conceit is taken one step further by making the audience themselves a character in the drama. In ""Cloverfield,"" for example, it is assumed that the audience is part of the government and has been granted security clearance to watch top secret footage classified ""Cloverfield."

""The Blair Witch Project"" from 1999 - a hit from the Sundance Film Festival - is often credited with kicking off the found footage craze, which then became even more popular as mobile devices and YouTube made the concept of amateur videos far more commonplace and popular.
