A list of the best muscle cars ranked by you. These are true muscle cars, not pony cars, and none of those new plastic toys claiming to be muscle cars. If you're looking for Mustangs and Camaros then check out my ranked Pony Car list. Old muscle cars are brash, blue-collar, fuel guzzling machines. They're factory made hot rods in which a huge engine has been placed within a medium sized car. What you get is a loud, exciting machine that turns like a boat. Gear-heads wouldn't have it any other way. Two doors and rear wheel drive are standard. Tracks are fine, but these cars are at their best when cruising and drag racing between the lights.

Nice list, but all of tthe top 5, at least are 1968 or later. In 1968, NHTSA invoked the first of the ant-smog rules on the car industry, marking the beginning of the end for the muscle cars. The zenith was 1967, when Chevy had the 427, Ford had a 426, 427 and 428, and Chrysler had the 426 Hemi and the 440.

"MUSCLE CARS" or what we actually Called SUPERCARS then..were in the 1960's mmaybe a few ExCeptions into the Early 1970s.. SSO you should put Joey Rosen's BALDWIN MOTION BIG BLOCK CheVrolet Products in there, and Norman Krauss's GRAND SPAULDING DODGE 440GSS DARTS, and Earlier GTOs like ROYAL OAKS PONTIAC with the 1964 ROYAL BOBCAT, etc.. THEEE RReally QOOOL! FACTORY HOT RODS,...while your at it anyway..... 7Grand POWERSHIFTS, JDF

I didn't include limited editions, but those are all great cars, so I'm tempted to make an entirely new list of limited edition factory hot rods. (Or you could do it.)

Were muscle cars really considered "super cars" back then? What about the Ferrari 250 GTO or the Mercedes-Benz 300SL?

Some gear-heads count pony cars as muscle cars, but I'm being a purist. I've got the mustang over on my pony car list, which you can find here: http://www.ranker.com/list/the-best-pony-cars/thebard

It's doing well right now in the rankings (but then it should be, since every other pony car was made to compete with it).
