The Greatest Guitarists Of All Time By reggiecollins [1 more lists]
Some were blindingly gifted, genius-level innovators. Some merely played a guitar like a ring on a bell. In a few cases, their appeal wasn't about technical chops at all. But they ALL had heart. Keep in mind that these are MY particular favorites, as I'm well aware that there are several conspicuous absences. AND, after the top ten or so, the order in which they're listed is completely arbitrary, so don't get all hot under the collar if one your favorites isn't ranked "higher." It's just a list. It's MY list. That being said, enjoy.:)
- 1A very small handful of players can perhaps match his chops, but no one, in my estimation, approaches his imagination. Hendrix was rock's equivalent to Miles, Coltrane & Bird. R.I.P.BUY @ amazon

- 2Cropper wasn't flashy and didn't play a lot of leads. But he his rhythm and style greatly enhanced all of those great '60s-era Stax records. Additional kudos to his equally talented bandmates Booker T. Jones (organ), Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass) & the late, great Al Jackson, Jr. (drums).BUY @ amazon
- 3To me, no one personifies rock 'n' roll for better or worse than Keef. If all that he'd ever done was to play virtually all of the guitar parts on The Rolling Stones' masterpiece, "Gimme Shelter" (despite the appearance of Mick Taylor in this clip, who is miming to the original Keith-dominated recording), that would've been enough. But then, of course, there was "Tumbling Dice," "Honky Tonk Women," "Jumping Jack Flash," "Brown Sugar," the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!" live versions of "Carol" & "Little Queenie," "Down The Road Apiece," the entire "Beggars Banquet" & "Let It Bleed" albums, the first half of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" (particularly the intro)," and...where do I stop?BUY @ amazon

- 4The first guitar hero, perhaps? Most of us are well aware of the folklore of aspiring blues musicians congregating with the Devil at the crossroads, and selling their souls in exchange for jaw-dropping skills. Dunno if there's any truth to that, but Robert Johnson's talent was not of this Earth. It's too bad that no film footage of him exists. In fact, there are only two known still shots of the guy. How appropriate. R.I.P.BUY @ amazon
- 5The Purple One's jaw-dropping prowess on the axe is usually an afterthought in most people's minds 'cuz he does so many other things insanely well. He may look strange (and, in this clip in particular, that atrocious 'do has GOT to go), but I'll put his skills up against just about anyone you can name. Dig, if you will, the Minnesota half-pint rippin' on some BLUES. Click "play," and THEN we can talk.BUY @ amazon
