What other genre is full of more lovable cliches than sports movies? Romantic comedies might come in a close second place for saccharine reassurance, but sports flicks are one of the few entertainments that can be simultaneously cheesy and energizing. Sure, a movie like Mighty Ducks, or even Hoosiers, won't win Oscars for screenwriting, but they don't give out awards for the goosebumps a young skater gets when they see that flying V, now do they? Rudy gets more unbelievable with every viewing, but it's still damn satisfying to see him get that final tackle. Then again, sports documentaries could constitute a whole other list--Hoop Dreams isn't so much inspiring as it is deeply human and affecting. Oh, and Slap Shot is just on there because it's inspiring for the Hanson Brothers alone.
