I am a History teacher who has studied presidential politics my entire adult life (actually even before that). Re-ranked on 1/18/2013 after watching the entire excellent Ultimate Guide to the President's series on The History Channel.

TR changed the role of the president and turned us into an international superpower as well as improving the lot of the common America, and America as a whole through his conservationist, progressive policies.

President longer than any other American, FDR successfully guided America through the Great Depression and WWII and into the role of the preeminent nation on Earth.

The first, and in many ways, the greatest U.S. President.  Washington sets the standard high with his restraint as much as his leadership in America's infancy.

Lincoln is one of America's most highly regarded President's, and rightly so, but it didn't hurt that his presidency came at America's most crucial moment and was sandwiched between three of the worst Presidents ever.

In my mind, Jefferson is THE quintessential Founding Father.  An American Renaissance man he contributed so much to our country beyond his uneven presidency that it must be factored into his ranking.

Wilson was the right president at the right time.  Unfortunately, he was so far ahead of his time that America is still trying to catch up to his vision.

Like Wilson, Obama - America's first multi-racial chief executive, is a little too far ahead of his time...  unfortunately.  I really think that, if Congress would just let him, Obama could be one of America's greatest presidents.  But for some reason (racism?) so many Republicans hate him that he has actually achieved far less than he could have.  And that great internal divide may just be the greatest threat facing our nation.

Probably America's most successful single term President, Polk expanded America to the Pacific ocean and positioned us as the world superpower that we are today.  Highly underrated.
