Also known as the Little Hipster Mermaid, the Hipster Ariel meme takes the sweet main character of Ariel from the 1989 Walt Disney animated classic 'The Little Mermaid' and puts her into a modern hipster world. Similar to other Internet memes like the Oblivious Suburban Mom and the Most Interesting Man in the World, the funny trend features an image of Ariel along with overlaid text explaining Ariel's thoughts.
Things have changed since the days when Ariel simply wanted to join the human world and fall in love, though for the record she did want all that before it was the mainstream thing to do. Now Ariel has to deal with hometown bands selling out, skinny jeans, cardigans and finding that special balance between being first at things and being ironic. Such a tough life for a mermaid!
The Hipster Arial meme is the brainchild of Braden Graeber, who posted the first image in the meme on the Tumblr blog F*** Yeah Hipster Ariel in February 2011. Giving good competition to Hipster Kitty, Hipster Ariel gained traction and soon became cooler than listening to Esperanza Spalding, before it was cool.
In the months since Hipster Ariel has gained quite the fan base, with over 30,000 Twitter followers and thousands of friends and fans on Facebook and Myspace. If that was not enough, Hipster Ariel has become a real-life trend with girls around the world changing their looks to have the bright red hair and black plastic glasses just like in the meme.
While the meme has taken on several images and even jumped into real life, the original Tumblr blog on which it all started is still thriving. Fans of the meme can download the template, add a fresh message and submit it to the blog. Walt Disney must be so proud!
