Activist Jason Russell is a co-founder of the non-profit group "Invisible Children," which focuses its efforts on raising awareness about the use of child soldiers in Uganda. In March of 2012, the group - and Russell - gained a massive global following with the release of a 30 minute online video called "Kony 2012," opposing Uganda's militant Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and its leader, Joseph Kony. The purpose of the video, which included footage of Russell explaining the LRA and Joseph Kony to his young son, was to get a worldwide movement going opposing Kony and to fundraise for further anti-Kony efforts. The video had created some amount of early controversy by those who questioned Invisible Children's real motives and accounting practices. (Some implied that they were attempting to build support for an American invasion of Uganda, or that an excessive amount of the funds raised went to the founders' travel and personal expenses.)

Within a week of the video's spread around the Web, Russell was detained by police in San Diego for allegedly masturbating in public and vandalizing cars. Video footage distributed by TMZ shows a brief scene of a nude Russell, appearing to be under the influence of some substance, standing on a street corner in the nude and hitting the sidewalk with his hands.

Obviously, the Internet - which was already captivated by the Kony/Russell/Invisible Children saga - sprang to life in mocking and sending up the entire situation. Within minutes of the public announcement of Russell's arrest, both the #Bony2012 and #Horny2012 hashtags were trending on Twitter, and sites like Imgur, Reddit, ICanHazCheezburger and Facebook were contributing to the spread of Russell and Kony jokes.
