Created in 2009, the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader or MO8G is a young, smiling girl who has absolutely no clue about musical artists past or present. Though the vast majority of the bands and artists are well known for anyone not living under a rock, Musically Oblivious 8th Grader has no idea what she is talking about, and it shows.
The Internet meme includes two main parts, an artist, band or musical genre as the question, and an off-the-wall reply. Living up to her name, rather than providing an intelligent or accurate response to the question, the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader gives head-scratching replies which make it clear that she has no clue about music whatsoever.
In the rare instance the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader does know the musical artist, clearly she has no sense of good music with favorites including the notorious Rebecca Black and Nickelback. Alternately, if the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader knows the artist, clearly any earlier artists with the same sound is stealing from the newer artist, such as comparisons that Madonna actually copies from Lady Gaga and definitely not the other way around.
Interestingly enough, the idea for the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader meme was inspired by a real person who was beyond clueless about music. Back in 2009, friends Grace and Emilie encountered this clueless individual and were blown away by her musical unconsciousness. Rather than putting the girl on blast, which surely would have led to tears and hair-pulling, by using her photo, the Grace and Emilie decided to take Emilie's eighth grade photo and start the meme in the girl's honor.
What followed included dozens of images featuring bands, songs, genres and even a few that didn't involve music at all, though the obliviousness remained the constant theme. Though the meme slowed a few months later after nearly every band or artist had been featured again and again in different context, the memory of the Musically Oblivious 8th Grader lives on.
