One of the most talked about games to come out this year was Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But for all the praise it's getting, one thing has become clear: all guards in the world used to be adventurers before taking an unfortunate arrow to the knee. It seems that every single one has that story. It's so prevelant in the game that the excuse has filtered into every comment section on the internet for the last week, as well as to all the most popular memes.

The Skyrim Arrow in the Knee Meme is what you would call a cross-meme meme. It doesn't really have it's own specific look, the only thing linking all of them together is the phrase ""I used to be an adventurer like you. Then I took an arrow in the knee.""

    The Origin

    In the hugely popular game that came out in November of 2011 Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (usually just called Skyrim), when the main character approaches the town guards (who are non-playable characters), they NPC's spout out various lines of dialog that are obviously on some kind of random rotation.

    The most often quoted and notable of these is when a character really opens up to you and tells you ""I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee."

    This is repeated so often throughout the game, that FunnyJunk, Reddit and then the entire internet started making references to this.

    This is the first popular image that popped up pointing out how common this knee thing is.


    Then everyone began using it to explain their failure to accomplish something (anything). And, more importantly, it's a phrase that the internet was able to squeeze into pretty much every popular image macro in the world.
