Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay

By Joanne | Los Angeles
In light of prominent anti-gay activist Roy Ashburn recently being caught walking out of a gay bar, and proving once again that conservative voters have little to no Gaydar, here's a list of 10 conservative anti-gay activists who turned out to be gay themselves.

  • Troy King Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
This top entry, Alabama Attorney General Troy King, plays itself out in beautiful symmetry.

Known for his vocal opposition to gay rights and for his attempt to outlaw sex toys, King was caught by his wife while having sex with a local homecoming King (see what we did there?) from--wait for it--Troy University.

Someone get the mascot over here and have it do a little dance.

  • Jim West Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
Spokane Mayor Jim West has worked really hard to debilitate gay rights in his community. He supported a bill to ban gays and lesbians from working in schools, daycare centers, and some state agencies, as well as a bill that bars the state from distributing pamphlets informing people how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS.

He's proposed that "any touching of the sexual or other intimate parts of a person" among teens be considered a criminal act.

However, for 25 years, West was having sexual relationships with boys and young men from his community and was, before he was caught, frequenting the very incognito website--just to show you his ninja skills--gay.com

All under the covers, of course. He even offered to find boys he'd "befriended" jobs with the city of Spokane in exchange for sex.

Some handcuffs, please. And no, not that kind.

  • Richard Curtis Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
This Washington State Representative has an anti-gay rights voting record--he voted against domestic partnerships for gays and opposed a bill prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Oh really now? Well, it wasn't before long that Mr. Mega-Compensation resigned from the House due to reports of his sexual encounter with a male escort being made, you know, "public" and all.

The reputed male prostitute, Cody Castagna, with whom he was cavorting, told police that Curtis offered him $1,000 to have sex with him and that Curtis purchased two gay pornographic films from the hotel for them to watch in his room.

Even more, this all went down with Curtis wearing a red negligee and Castagna has pictures to prove it. Pictures he only took as revenge when it was discovered that Curtis only had $200 in his wallet.

That's something to smile about. For us.

    Bruce Barclay
Bruce Barclay Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
Bruce Barclay, the Republican commissioner of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, is practically the gay porn star of politics. Due to an allegation of rape by 20-year-old male Marshall McCurdy, police obtained a warrant to search Barclay's home on March 31st.

They didn't find evidence of rape.

Instead, they found videotapes of hundreds of sexual encounters with men that Barclay filmed on high-tech surveillance cameras. It was apparent that Barclay and McCurdy had consensual sex.

It was also apparent that his personal Republican stance was not as right-wing as he'd led people to believe.

  • Roy Ashburn Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
On March 3, 2010, this conservative California State Senator, who always votes against any gay-rights bills, should have just stayed in for the night.

But then again, if he did, he wouldn't have accidentally outted himself in such a grand way.

As the story goes, after leaving a gay bar with an unidentified man, Roy Ashburn was arrested for DUI.

Despite his classy reveal, the point is this: he left a gay bar with an unidentified man. Since then, Ashburn has admitted that he's gay to KERN radio host Inga Barks, but that his voting record reflects his "responsibility to [his] constituents".

Kinda feels like he has a whole new demographic of constituents now that could use a liiiittle more help.

  • Larry Craig Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
Former Idaho Republican, Larry Craig, who served 18 years in the U.S. Senate, supported the Federal Marriage Amendment which banned marriage rights to same-sex couples and has a 0 rating from the Human Rights Campaign group.

His rating for lewd conduct, however, was raging high when he was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on June 11, 2007 for cottaging an undercover police officer.

Can the HRC give out negative ratings? Please?

  • Ed Schrock Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
Ed Schrock vehemently opposed gay-rights issues during his two terms in Congress. From same-sex marriage to allowing gays in the military, he was 100% against anything gay happening anywhere on, or near, the grid.

Meanwhile, off the grid: August 30, 2004, Ed Schrock dropped out of the race for his third term in Congress after being caught on tape soliciting sex from a gay prostitute.

Don't know why it was so incriminating he didn't even run, he could have just said what the next guy did when he got caught for the same thing...

  • Robert Allen Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
The truth comes out in a public restroom yet again. Florida State Representative, Robert Allen, was arrested for offering to perform fellatio to an undercover cop in the men's room of a park for $20.

The politician backed himself up by saying he only offered the policeman oral sex because he was afraid of black people and "didn't want to become a statistic"... which makes about as much sense to us as it does to you.

Statistics, though, show that Allen--who is married with children--has always voted against gay rights legislation.

His voting record is over 90% in line with the Christian Coalition, an advocacy group for anti-gay amendments.

He has achieved quite a bit, though, in going from anti-gay, to racist, to hypocrite, all the way to contradictory math error all in one day.

    Hats off!

Known as Pastor Ted to his congregation at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ted Haggard was outed by prostitute, and professional masseur, Mike Jones in November 2006 for paying him to engage in sex with him for three years.

He was also purchasing, then using, crystal methamphetamine ("Crystal Meth", for all the kids out there) with his pay-for-play partner.

Haggard had supported Colorado Amendment 43, which bans same-sex marriage in the state.

In his own words, he's not a homosexual, he's just a "heterosexual with issues."

  • Mark Foley Top 10 Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay People
    Oh, Mark Foley.

A man formerly in charge of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children (which dealt with legislation protecting Americans against sexual predators, and made stricter guidelines for tracking them) was caught having unlawful internet conversations via IM and email with two former pages (aged 16 and 18... oh, the irony).

Later, two news organizations quoted anonymous former pages saying they had sexual liaisons with Foley after turning 18 and 21.

Foley's answer to this, after all was said and done (through his lawyer), was that he had never "ever had inappropriate sexual contact with a minor in his life" and that he is "absolutely, positively not a pedophile".

His lawyer also said that Foley was a victim of sexual assault by an (unnamed) clergyman as a child and that the inappropriate conversations he had with the pages were due to alcoholism. Which is all a pretty convenient way to promote the right-wing "gay = disease" angle while still going down in flames.

His lawyer also stated that Foley is gay, even after Foley described even the thought of early allegations of his homosexuality as "revolting and unforgivable".

Apparently, his homosexuality had been an "open secret" in Washington for years.

Ha ha ha !! it is very funny. It really made me laugh whole heartedly.

  by anonymous at May 24, 2010 15:11
This is awesome, although I agree that the list probably needs to be expanded (and, of course, updated about WEEKLY as every new instance of hypocrisy arises). I'm not sure when you did this list, but I did miss seeing the Congressman "Tickle Fight" from upstate NY, I believe. Maybe not enough HARD evidence on him, and just lots of same-sex harassment.

by soundsgoodtome at May 10, 2010 10:28
joanne, this is an awesome list. PLEASE remove the limit on 10 entries, and just make it the "Top Anti-Gay Activists Caught Being Gay." Or at least bump it to 15, then 20, etc., as more and more of these idiots show their true (rainbow) colors!

by addie at April 22, 2010 20:58
I don't understand the last one. It supports, even demonstrates the guys point that homosexuality is wrong because he only IMed a male teeneager because he was drunk (not the teen, roy)?? So then Royboy's behavior was excused and actually shown to be a good thing?? Is that what happened?? Wouldn't it be better to just admit to being a child molester than let people know you are as stupid as Royboy, clearly is?? If he also sleeps with adults, real adults, gay or straight, you would think he would be glad that it came out.

  by anonymous at April 10, 2010 20:32

by Keith at April 08, 2010 18:34
It ought to be the most widely broadcast list in the new political wars.

by Perplexed at April 02, 2010 06:29
I still can't believe Gay Rights is even an issue. With all the problems we face in this country, who the #@$& cares how two legally concenting people choose to live? This isn't and can't even be compared to pedophelia, so stop with that crap. And the "sanctity of marriage" has been a joke for years. Get off the soapbox, live and let live, and start trying to put the USA back on track with real issues that affect us all every day. I trust the next generation of rich, old white males will be a bit more tolerant (or at least more capable of exercising common sense). I'm curious to see who catches the ire once gay people are allowed the same civil recognition that was finally granted to Irish, Jews, women, blacks...etc. I'm betting it's the athiests. Or maybe cat owners?

by addie at April 22, 2010 21:16
perplexed-- it's sinple, We, here in the US, have a magnificent constitution, but for a very long time, it has been over-ridden, nearly, issue for issue, by the catholic church.

These guys would make me laugh, if they hadn't been so destructive to gay rights before getting caught. I just hope I never see any of these guys in the Castro.

by StephChavez at April 22, 2010 15:47
:) My dream is to move to The Castro just for those special times when groups decide they want to walk there and spout their little conservative BS. I'm gonna need the Rick Roll song on a loop, some good audio equipment and something to chuck.

by please at March 29, 2010 00:30
just because the oppose it doesn't mean they don't struggle with it themselves. Its like an alcoholic who goes to AA and then messes up and drinks. these men believe that a homosexual lifestyle is wrong, and they also happen to struggle with it themselves. It doesn't mean that homosexuality is right.

I lived in the West Palm area for a number of years and it was an "open secret" for years that Foley was a big ole' queen. There was a wealthy gay (but somewhat closeted) businessman out in Wellington that had a holiday party every year that was very gay and Foley always attended. Mark my words, eventuality the current governor will come screaming out of the closet or be Outed by someone.

by Brettski at March 22, 2010 12:06
Reading about some of these activists really make me worried. it coincides with the secrecy of our government. shady business

by Tom D. at March 21, 2010 09:02
Professional anti-gay activists should be presumed gay until proven otherwise. These hypocrites have raised money by opposing full civil liberties for gay and lesbian citizens for too long, without being called to account for their hypocrisy.

by Canaduck at March 25, 2010 16:34
Well said. At this point the gay anti-gays seem to outnumber the straight anti-gays!

  by anonymous at March 20, 2010 17:45
So should we throw out all the laws banning sex with children and rape because these people are hypocrits and are accused or guilty of these acts? I say it shows that everyone is human, no better than the next and we are all as capable of being caught in questionable circumstances and as capable of doing something that we said we NEVER would. Especially if alcohol or drugs are involved, but certainly where power is involved. Power is very corrupting.

  by anonymous at March 24, 2010 13:40
this has NOTHING to do with sex with children OR rape or that laws that prohibit those atrocities. These are individuals who publicly speak out against the rights of two consenting adults who are not given the same rights as their neighbors in this community we call a country.

by IHateEverything at March 21, 2010 02:13
You've missed the point entirely. The main reason that these guys are so anti gay is because they can't come to terms with their own true feelings, so they try to distance themselves from it as much as possible. Yes, we are all human and hypocritical in some ways, but these men have built an entire castle of lies and deceit, and will not accept what they are doing is either wrong (pedophilia), or not wrong (homosexuality). Power is not the issue at all.

by Lukas, NY at March 19, 2010 09:12
And why are people surprised by this? Politicians routinely lie to get elected, husbands routinely cheat on the their wives with men and women, wives routinely cheat on the husbands with men and women, etc.etc.etc. The sooner people stop putting politicians, sports stars and the likes on pedestals, since after all we don't REALLY know anything about their private lives, and take charge of their own lives with responsibility and values, the better!

  by anonymous at March 20, 2010 17:52
Nobody put them on a pedestal. The reason this is different is that these guys were secretly gay while working to hurt other gay people. They had the option to either vote for gay rights or just vote the "wrong" way and keep quiet on the subject. But no, they became crusaders for bigotry... against their own kind. Disgusting.

  by anonymous at March 23, 2010 10:26
AGREED!! #1. Gay is OK. #2. Hurting other gays to cover up their own gay feelings, despicable! Outing them...Priceless.

hahah yeah. obviously they didn't get away with it if their face is on a list called "top 10 anti-gay politicians caught being gay" the keyword there is "caught."

by dodger at March 19, 2010 13:40
The same way all those liberal politicians get away with fooling around on their wives.

by badger at March 20, 2010 17:04
Actually, there is a difference. No one bats an eye when liberals get caught cheating on their wives because liberals don’t campaign from a platform of moral superiority. They might campaign as intellectually superior, but not morally. So when liberals get caught in sex scandals they aren’t necessarily considered hypocrites. These people all are hypocrites.

by Fran at March 18, 2010 08:32
I agree that these Republican hypocrites are scum and add Gov. Crist. to the self hatred list But that doesn't make closet cases in the Democratic Party less stinky. Not a one of them supports full equality or sexual freedom. Let's face it :If Mrs Clinton isn't lesbian, no one is. And Ed Koch is just a monster.Shame. If power is worth trampling on your lovers, you are the most immoral.

by BRS at April 04, 2010 12:34
I can't speak to Hillary Clinton's sexuality; however, I've noticed that all independent-minded women (me included) get taken for lesbians. That's one's not about sexual orientation at all. I think many people are still confused at a woman whose identity does not place men at the center like the sun in relation to the planets. This becomes even more confusing if the woman actually does prefer men sexually/romantically.

by Canaduck at March 25, 2010 16:35
YOU MISSED THE POINT.

by JKR at March 19, 2010 12:47
Wow, is this all you could come with? And if so--Mrs. Clinton or Koch are not anti-gay. It as all about the HYPOCRISY, stupid--not about being gay.

* Republican benefactor of conservative Christian groups, Richard A. Dasen Sr., was charged with rape for allegedly paying a 15-year old girl for sex. Dasen, 62, who is married with grown children and several grandchildren, has allegedly told police that over the past decade he paid more than $1 million to have sex with a large number of young women. * Mary Kay LaTourneau...teacher, pedophile, and child rapist is a staunch Republican who’s father is John Schmitz, one time right-wing Christian Republican Congressman from Orange County, CA. He also was a pedophile and had sex with minors fathering a child out of wedlock. * Former South Dakota Republican state Rep. Ted A. head spinning reading these lists... this is paedophilia. there seems to be a correlation between being gay and being a paedophile in circles of power?

  by anonymous at March 17, 2010 16:58
This list isn’t speculation or conspiracy...sadly its a matter of public record. * Republican anti-abortion activist Howard Scott Heldreth is a convicted child rapist in Florida. * Republican County Commissioner David Swartz pleaded guilty to molesting two girls under the age of 11 and was sentenced to 8 years in prison. * Republican judge Mark Pazuhanich pleaded no contest to fondling a 10-year old girl and was sentenced to 10 years probation. * Republican anti-abortion activist Nicholas Morency pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography on his computer and offering a bounty to anybody who murders an abortion doctor. * Republican legislator Edison Misla Aldarondo was sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping his daughter between the ages of 9 and 17. * Republican Mayor Philip Giordano is serving a 37-year sentence in federal prison for sexually abusing 8- and 10-year old girls. * Republican campaign consultant Tom Shortridge was sentenced to three years probation for taking nude photographs of a 15-year old girl. * Republican racist pedophile and United States Senator Strom Thurmond had sex with a 15-year old black girl which produced a child. * Republican pastor Mike Hintz, whom George W. Bush commended during the 2004 presidential campaign, surrendered to police after admitting to a sexual affair with a female juvenile.

Unlike the posters above, I have a job so this is just a short list: *Democrat Bill Clinton : His affair with intern Monica Lewinsky may very well go down as the biggest sex scandal in American history. *Democrat Gary Condit: The California congressman’s affair with an intern became exposed after the girl, Chandra Levy, disappeared. *Democrat Jim McGreevey (2004): The married with children former New Jersey governor -- with his wife by his side -- resigned as governor after dropping the bombshell that he was having a gay affair. * Democrat Gavin Newsom: The married San Francisco mayor admitted to sleeping with the wife of a top aide. But was it a career-ender? No. He’s running for governor. *Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa: Weeks after separating from his wife, the Los Angeles Mayor admitting to having a secret affair with a TV reporter. *Democrat Tim Mahoney: The man who replaced Mark Foley was eventually derailed by his OWN sex scandal. *Democrat Eliot Spitzer: Always to be remembered as “Client No. 9,” the meteoric rise of the career of Spitzer came crashing down after it was revealed he’d spent tens of thousands of dollars on hookers -- despite being married with kids. *Democrat David Paterson: Soon after assuming office, the man who replaced Elliot Spitzer, acknowledged that both he and his wife had slept with people other than each other several years ago during a rocky period in their relationship. *Democrat John Edwards: After the National Enquirer exposed Edwards’ affair, the one-time Democratic shooting star finally admitted to sleeping with a woman his campaign hired to shoot Web videos despite his wife’s very public bout with cancer and his 2008 presidential run. *Democrat Kwame Kilpatrick: The Detroit mayor eventually ended up in jail after he was convicted of lying about a text message/sex scandal. At the risk of being accused of being a religious fanatic for paraphrasing the Bible, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I'm sorry, I have to reply. What is wrong with you? If we're going to compare moral values, how can sex between two consenting adults - even if it's paid for - where NO ONE IS GETTING HURT even on the same plane as the long list of offenders who have participated in CHILD MOLESTATION AND THE RAPE OF CHILDREN?? This article is about hypocrisy. The anti-gay activists are so filled with self-hatred, perpetuated by their own party, that they will deny others rights and hurt others in order to keep their heterosexual cover. The Republican party has long built a platform on "family values" and their own skewed self-righteous morality, while, as shown as the above comments, indulging in some of the most heinous crimes with innocents known to man. YOU CANNOT COMPARE THEM. And it's disgusting, absolutely disgusting, that you would put having an affair on the same level as RAPING an innocent little boy or girl.

by anon at March 27, 2010 05:32
gay rights hopefully don't include rights for gays who happen to be paedophiles, and let's face it, most paedophiles are gay. men raping young boys are by definition gay.

by BRS at April 04, 2010 12:35
Most pedophiles are not "gay." They are straight men whose victims are girls.

  by anonymous at March 31, 2010 21:53

by yup at March 27, 2010 05:34
it used to be called sodomy

  by anonymous at June 18, 2010 11:18
Sodomy is the term used for anal sex. It's never been associated with paedophilia. And relating paedophilia to homosexuality is just a last ditch effort to demonize gay people.

by UMG at March 21, 2010 06:36
You're missing the point. None of these people oppose to gay rights. The point of the article is not just the misconduct, but the fact that in spit of them being gay, they still vote against gay rights. NJ former governor McGreevey, for example, always advocated for LGBT rights and allowed right for domestic partners. The main point of the list is the fact that these people have done nothing if not opposint to the rights they themselves should have as gay men.

by Igor at March 20, 2010 06:55
Dude. Comparing people that cheated on their spouses (about half the earths married adults) to hypocrites, whose "conducts" include child molestation, gay sex . e.t.c. is ridiculous. Come on, come up with something really bad to deffend your prty or shut up. Being from a different country , i could care less about the political parties in usa, whos gay whos not, marriage rights, religious fanatics, black racists , white racists, and such. The problem in this country i think is the obsession of americans with other peoples lives and the pathological need of the entire nation to tell people how they should live their lives. (way off the topic of the article i know)

  by anonymous at March 19, 2010 22:33
You are completely right that these people all have problems, too. But the article is about hypocrisy, not having an affair. So despite all your remarks being true, they're not relevant.

This cavalcade of self loathing psychos ought to be excoriated by gays and straights alike. They lie and slink along in the shadows living their half-lives while denying those who have the courage to be out, gay and proud the rights they deserve because of that courage. But their equally classless colleagues will continue to do business with them and their mealy mouthed wives will find some reason to continue on with their faithless husbands who are "getting help." You can't shame or insult these creeps. That sensitivity left them long before they entered politics. Imagine the lessons they are teaching their defensless whelps...even getting caught with your pants down is not a deal breaker!

by nutmeg JP at March 17, 2010 12:42
While I knew Foley would be on here, and he is a raging hypocrite due to the teen angle, he was not nearly as anti-gay (especially in recent years) as most of the above, and let it be assumed he was gay for years. Oops- just saw that several of you already covered most of this. That being said-yes, while not a pedophile, I do think that a 40-something congressmen flirting with 16 year old pages is "exploitation", but general sexual hypocrisy is not what this list is about.

by -- at March 17, 2010 11:20
mark foley acted like an idiot (don't get me wrong), but he shouldn't be on this list. he had an extremely high Human Rights Campaign rating on gay rights. his voting record wasn't "anti-gay" in any sense of the word. also, he wasn't even in the closet... everyone in his district knew he was gay.. he just didn't talk about it publicly because (according to him) he didn't want to upset his conservative parents. also, even though it's really creepy to have flirtateous conversations with a 16 or 18 year old, it's not a crime... nor would it have been a crime to even sleep with a 16 year old because the age of consent in washington DC is 16. bottom line: he acted like a creep, but he wasn't anti-gay, he didn't commit any crime, and he doesn't belong on this list with all of these anti-gay, self-hating closet cases. other than that, this is a great article. very eye opening.

Foley also wasn't a pedophile. He was, like many men gay and straight, drawn to youth. But he didnt go for pre-pubescent kids.

He wasnt attracted to children. He, like many men gay and straight, just liked them when they were at their most youthful, vulnerable and stupid. It's definitely creepy and not okay -- esp. given the position of authority -- but it's not pedophilia.

  by anonymous at March 17, 2010 15:28
Pedophilia is an attraction to pre-pubescent children. Technically, he might be an ephebophile, but definitely not a pedophile based on this info.

These people are worse than the neocons and right wing bigots that persecute the gay community. That are the scum of the scum, the absolute bottom of the bigot barrel. And #10 doesn't belong in this list. Mark Foley is a pedophile, it has nothing to do with being gay or not.

by The Menstruator at March 17, 2010 07:46
Fascinating there are no women listed. Is it because female politicians are more honest, better closeted, they make up such a small number of politicians or that no one cares because we are women? Funny Obama isn't listed with his sexual affair with Larry Sinclair. Sure Sinclair didn't pass a lie detector test but I wonder who was working the machine?

by BZB at March 19, 2010 15:01
maybe because the Larry Sinclair thing was and is an obvious fraud and hoax?

by mandamaa at March 17, 2010 18:02

Now, Mark Foley's voting record, as I remember, is not bad. What about that VA state senator who was caught pantless by the police in a notorious cruising park in Richmond? And this is very old, but don't forget congressman Bauer from Maryland, who was caught in bed with a 15-yo boy.

Crist for sure but also Ed Koch , who pretended to support gay rights while working to re-elect anyone who blocked them for years. He even campaigned for Bush. Koch had it in his power as mayor to de-fund vice raids and entrapment. Instead he supported them. Reading the names of those arrested for consentual sex on his radio show. Refused to even look at police violence against minorities, which was a sign to the police they could get away with anything. Only after Koch was a real Civilian review board put in place. During Koch, the police themselves reviewed civilian complaints and dismissed 99 per cent of those who dared file them . He was also mayor at the start of Aids and our brothers deaths meant nothing to him. To me Koch will always top the list. Paying lip service to gay rights (often needed in liberal NYC) while pretending Bess Myerson was his girlfriend and constantly trying to harm us.

In response to the question about openly gay Republicans, in Minnesota a state senator, Paul Koering, said in 2005 that he would vote against a measure to restrict marriage to straight couples, and then outed himself when now US Rep. Michele Bachmann , a serious right wing wacko, threatened to out him. He is from a very conservative rural district and not only beat an antigay challenger in the subsequent primary but was reelected in 2006. If only all gay Republicans had some courage.

Karl Rove - the repubs own Paul Joseph Gobbels, who said "when you tell a lie often enough, it will be seen as the truth" That was in the 1930s in Nazi Germay. BTW, 2 wives 2 divorces. But when said pedophile is going after members of the same gender, they're a gay pedophile.

by deeter131 at March 16, 2010 18:38
pedophilia has no sexual orientation. many pedophiles will molest either males or females. thier proclivity has ZERO to do with what sex a child is at all... please get informed before spreading more falsehoods. a man who molests a little boy one week will just as easily molest a little girl the next. sexual preference or designation has nothing to do with pedophilia at all. period. much the same way that while straight people will argue this to the death, the majority of crossdressers are actually self- identified STRAIGHT men, and likewise crossdressing has nothing to do with sexual preference.

Dear Everyone, Great points all around! It's actually a great oversight that a lot of people make, I was guilty of it while making this list, and I think that's part of the problem... a huge one. Especially here in California, where it's even been used as a platform to keep teachers from doing their jobs. Thanks for reading and enjoying the list, guys, I always run any sensitive lists by my gay roommate first and even he didn't catch this. Due to popular demand, Coughlin has been erased! New item has been added.

Mark Foley is a WAY better choice in the end, but although I agree that paedophilia does not equal homosexuality (and as a career homosexual I would know this well) it isn't THAT much of a stretch to have a de frocked priest on here....if it was only little boys he was touching, then he was in fact, a gay pedophile. But, considering this is a sensitive topic, and some people are humor impaired, maybe it is for the best you changed it. And like I said....Mark Foley EARNED his spot on this list dammit!

by iain hammer at March 16, 2010 13:22
Pity that the priestly slimeball Coughlin (#10) gets included - paedophilia is a patholgy, nothing to do with being gay. 'Very much destroyed' ? We can but hope.

by JML at March 16, 2010 12:14
I'm with the others: #10 should be removed from this list. Child molester does not equal gay, whether the youths were males or not.

by FR at March 16, 2010 11:52
Please please please take #10 (Richard Coughlin) out of there! He was molesting CHILDREN. That is not the same thing. I cannot share this list if he is a part of it. I am sure you can find another GAY who suffers from the "thou doth protest too much" syndrome. There are so so many out there.

by ugh! at March 16, 2010 10:56
Take out the last one!! He's not gay, he's a pedophile!!

by Elizabeth at March 16, 2010 10:22
A comment on #10. Child molester does not equal gay, it only equals sick. Of course there is a correlation, in that who is he to judge any other person's sexual activity when he is committing the most atrocious of acts, but this list is supposed to be people who "turned out to be gay." And evidence of child molestation is hardly evidence of him being gay.

by Gene at March 16, 2010 10:49
Great point, Elizabeth! I'm also thinking that while all of these men obviously have issues, should we be listing them as a bit of a triumph for gay society or classify them as to the failure of men who have wanted to not "be gay" and/or identified as such. There are countless men who are, at this moment, fighting the same fight and winning, who we will never know about. While they are an interesting twist to each story, theyn certainly don't make a case for "being gay is ok" because these guys have turned out to be.

by Dracula at March 16, 2010 16:08
I don't think this list is going after anyone for failing to hide that they're gay. It's merely pointing out how hypocritical these men were when it came to their voting records and actions toward gay society before they were outed.
