Top 10 Best Obama Moments of 2009 By etriplett [19 more lists]
Barack Obama is the best. He came into the Presidency at a pretty tough time, and while to be honest he hasn't been as aggressive on some issues as I and other progressives would have liked, I think we can cut him some slack considering the huge shambles the country was left in thanks to the last guy, and administrations before him. He's done some pretty good things in the first year, and several more are in the works. I think Obama's biggest struggle is dealing with government bureaucracy, which is not something that can be easily fixed.

Appointed a Special Adviser to the President on Violence Against Women
Obama appointed an adviser to the Pres to ensure his agenda is coordinated across federal agencies, and fully addresses prevention (there's that magic word again), programs and the legal aspect of gender based violence. Pretty awesome! -

Increased Funding to Expand Community Based Prevention Programs
Clearly, as a Public Health Professional I am going to applaud Obama's efforts in health, of which he has quite a few. Obama has been a strong proponent of preventative efforts, focusing on improving our public health system, and shifting the focus in US Health Care from a focus on a "sickness" system to a health and wellness system. Basically, that's pretty progressive and radical. Even though it is essentially common sense. - 3
Health Care Reform
This one is still in the works, but as Obama stated in his speech in September of 2009, this is not a new issue and health care reform has been on the table for several years. But it is, after a long struggle, finally moving towards actually being implemented. Will it solve all of our problems? No, not at all. But it is a step in the right direction. -

Approved Federal Funding for Embryonic Cell Research
Obama reversed President Bush's ban on federal funding for embryonic cell research, a move that made scientists and Christopher Reeves fans very pleased. Also, Nancy Reagan. This really is a great move for science, and will hopefully lead to some great research. Kudos, Obama! - 5
Called Fox News Out
Obama basically referred to Fox News as a News Organization that operates from a radio talk show format. Which is basically like referring to The Daily Show as a show that reports the news with a humerous slant, in that that is a correct assumption about Fox News. But in all honesty, in the United States, you basically need to get your news from other countries.
