Even if he didn't die, he probably would be still my number one of the year. What he did with The Joker, is something that will be teached in Film and Acting schools for years.

Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz) in Vicky Christina Barcelona

Half written screenplay, half improvisation. Half english, half spanish. The movie may be a paid advertisement by the tourism offices from Catalonia and Asturias, but Cruz really steals the whole show in an amazing supporting turn. Most wished the movie was just about her.

The revelation of 2008. Jean-Claude Van Damme can act, and JCVD plays as the movie "Being John Malkovich" didn't dare to be. JCVD is a total mirror of the real one, and Van Damme bares his soul, literally, in this film. The 6 minutes monologue is a scene for film history. And to think they gave Best Actor to Sean Penn for his manerisms and watered down despiction of Harvey Milk, yet JCVD was mostly unseen...

It's an irony that only the glam-filled Golden Globes acknowledged this as one of Tom Cruise's best performances ever. He totally loses himself in this grown cameo and actually gives, prejudices aside, the best performance in the movie. Yes, the best.
