Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime

By phact0rri | Los Angeles
There are a myriad of reasons why lots of manga are hard to grip by people who have an "anchor to reality", just like there are people who can’t grasp Philip Glass’s music, or an abstract painting. But for some reason people often scream and shout about Anime being completely mind-bleedingly incomprehensible, and to an Anime geek (or an "Otaku", if you fancy that term) it's almost strange wondering why people can’t understand

This list is targeted for a specific sort of anime/manga, and is not supposed to be a blanket statement for all manga. This is specifically for "Shonen" manga and anime.

If you get confused by Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z and other action anime you might find a few a reasons why that is—however, if you're looking for how to understand FLCL, Yakitake Japan, and Super Milk Chan… well I’m afraid you’ll have to wait until I describe why Japanese humour is so great.

If all of these words are basically Japanese to you, it's because they are.

  • Physics
Now I assume most people know that physics are heavily exaggerated in pretty much any action media known to the human race. I mean how fun would a Jackie Chan film be if they took away all the Wires? How fun would The Flash be if we mentioned that the human body couldn’t exist at such speeds? But Action anime shows don’t just alter Physics, they completely chuck it out the window. The forces of nature work completely different from show to show, and many times different on the same character from one episode to the next.

Time Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
“oh crap I’ve only got three minutes to beat this guy or I will die!” And after they explain the plan nine minutes have gone by, and we're like “wtf?” Well, time in Anime is a lot like physics in that it doesn’t have a continued basis. We like to assume that a minute is a minute. Or at least close to our own time scheme. In American action movies they might stretch five minutes to fifteen minutes, but in say Naruto three minutes can last three episodes.

  • Science
If you think you know a lot about everything, one of your favourite things to do is, derail pretty much everything you can to prove your awesome knowledge of science. Don’t do this in Anime. If you know a lot about science, ignore it or you will be so confused you might suffer a brain explosion. Don’t worry how cyborg can be powered by Cola, or how a person can grow nineteen sizes larger and not collapse due to the obvious frailties of the human skeleton.

Muscles Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
Just because they aren’t drawn like batman doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Strangely it is often believed that Anime character’s have muscles in their very bones, so that’s why twig thin anime protagonists somehow seem to as strong as Olympic level body builders. So its best not to wonder how wimpy 98 pound pretty-boy is able to lift a building, or you might start to question your own masculinity and that’s no good for anyone (especially not the gay population).

  • Damage
Damage Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
If you are anything like me, you instantly think about how much you could take when you watch an action movie, but in anime it really doesn’t work that way. You can’t assume that the characters in anime are even human, or work with the same sort of bodies or bone structures we have. In something like one Piece is sorts of understandable when you got a rubber guy going around, but when you see a human person in the same series take a bomb explosion at point blank range and live to tell the tale… well you can’t really compare him to what you know in reality. So just don’t.

  • Culture Shock
Manga and Anime is an obviously a Japanese thing, and since most of us aren’t Japanese many of the customs and ways of life are much different than what we are use to. We often can’t quite figure out certain social habits, and question certain vices they have. This in turn can limit our enjoyment, and some of them make us uncomfortable. However its important to keep an open mind, and who knows you might learn something.

Language Barrrier Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
In case you weren’t aware language doesn’t usually translate to exacts. So there are many times that there is a pun, or some cases a huge plot moment that can not be translated properly into English. For the Otakus this is a golden crowning moment in their obsession with Japanese culture, feeling there is a reason to live in their parents basement pleasuring themselves to Ani-manga volumes of Inyuyasha. For the rest of it… well we usually have no idea whats going on and we hope it’ll come out in context clues.

  • Inside Jokes
Unlike American Super hero comics, many times there’s a bit of humour in action manga. This humour can often be an inside joke for those who are well rounded in other Manga, or the artists previous work. Of course unfortunately for those of us who are well rounded in Manga, these jokes still aren’t funny – and just tend to alienate audiences much in the way Saturday Night Live has since the 90’s.

  • Monologues
Monologues Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
In American comics we have long been guilty of Super villains like Doctor Doom delivering some plan that takes up three panels, or a morale speech by Captain America as he’s on his death. However Anime characters can deliver such long winded speeches as they are getting ready to lay the smack down on some enemy it makes Alan Moore’s text boxes in the Swamp Thing read like the ingredient list of a bag of Lightly Salted Crisps. More often than not when hit with blocks of text this massive we usually just read right over it, or in anime we sort of forget were supposed to be listening.

  • A billion episodes
A billion episodes Top 10 Reasons You Don't Understand Anime Books & Publications
when we look at animes like Narutu, One Piece, Bleach, D. Gray Man, etc we know that there are hundreds of episodes. And like in Super hero comics they constantly will reference history that occurred a few years back. And like Super hero comics we have no idea what they are talking about, and even with a small flash back we still are confused, without going to a Wiki and who has time for that? They should tell us there will be a quiz later on in the series so we can remember what the hell went on then… and how the hell it relates to now. The irony is in anime they rarely do relate to know so we mainly get a migraine trying to remember a 30 episode fight ten years ago.

I agree with everything. Except! Point 10. Billion Episodes? =P Exaggeration much? And, I dunno about other Anime, but I disagree that 1 fight is 30 Episodes?

Anime is a joke...pathetic at that.

by topanimes.net at December 02, 2009 04:12
well i guess anime is more fun coz it has a lot of things to discover though there are lines that are hard to imagine, but that's the beautiful thing about anime, you tend to imagine everything their saying and that makes you a creative person.

  by anonymous at December 13, 2009 23:05
yes

by girls over there at November 28, 2009 19:30
I'm sorry, but anime is much more than what your saying. Anime is creative and has a plot, which most American cartoon shows do not. If its a flash back you should have no problems remembering, and the reason for tons of episodes is it takes a long time for the character to reach his/her goal. Monologs, most of the time, are not that long, actually. If they're boring then you clearly haven't seen any good animes. Plus, when a character explains something, or formulates a plan, its usually very clever. Anime can make you feel good inside, and make you feel you can do anything because you watch the characters grow and change, and they learn new things, much like real people.

  by anonymous at November 25, 2009 06:59
is this meant for people who watch anime, or people who don't watch anime? If it's the former, we already know the medium inside out and know that anime is much more complex than these 10 points. And if it's for people who don't watch, I think you're doing a pretty good job of convincing them it's completely insane and should be avoided.

by dxr at November 25, 2009 06:57
A lot of these points vary from anime to anime - sure, maybe the language barrier and culture shock are fairly common. However, insane physics, muscles, damage... that stuff varies tremendously within the medium. And when you mention billions of episodes, that's also only applicable to a few anime - Most animes have 20-30 episodes.

by dude at November 24, 2009 05:16
Hold on, a well crafted monologue is worse than a stupid speech that's illogically in the middle of an action scene and doesn't serve any purpose? That's just stupid.

by tht guy at November 23, 2009 15:02
anime is for people without creativity themselves, so they feel that they can drift away in a fictional universe. another note on the culture shock, its japanese, are you japanese? no? then stop pretending to be.....

  by anonymous at November 28, 2009 19:40
'anime is for people w/out creativity', do you know what your saying? Anime is, at least, a tv show. No matter where you are in the world; people will watch tv shows. So you are saying people who watch tv shows lack creativity. And if you want to drift into fictional universe, read a book. Thats why people read books. To escape to another world! In anime you can see charaters grew and change. That's why people feel connected to characters, that's why people care for them. If you met someone, watched them grow and change and learn new things, then wouldn't you feel a bond, too?

  by anonymous at November 23, 2009 17:30
Are you serious? "Anime is for people without creativity themselves, so they feel that they can drift away in a fictional universe." Anime is an art, a drawing style. There are many, many people who draw it, and even more people who appreciate just looking at it. Anime can spark imagination even for those who can't draw; thinking about their own storyline, own character designs, wishing "oh, if only i could only draw that..." and many people use that drive to get INTO drawing. Anime can even inspire music artists, listening to a song from an anime and get inspiration for one of their own works. A mass amount of people around the world listen to japanese songs due to anime, even if they can't understand the lyrics, they still appreciate it. "Another note on the culture shock, it's japanese, are you japanese? no? then stop pretending to be....." Look around you, there are many things that aren't from wherever you are from. Taking a foreign language like spanish? Thinking in your logic, unless you are Spanish you shouldn't take Spanish class right? How about algebra from Indians? Football from England? I could go on and on, but point being is that you use/do many things that are out of your cultural bracket. So don't be so hypocritical about people trying to be like the Japanese, when you yourself have done things similar.

by IHateEverything at November 08, 2009 04:25
I can't tell if this is supposed to be funny or informative, but it's coming off as neither done well. The author obviously doesn't have a very good grasp on the subject, or just can't explain it with any sort of linguistic skill. He/she also keeps referencing "American" comics/ cartoons, but very clearly knows very little about them, because the examples (or lack there of) are vague and poorly referenced. If you're going to compare two things, don't just study one and gloss over the other.

by phact0rri at November 24, 2009 00:20
You are very right. This was one of the first lists I did, and I made a rush go on many of them as I wasn't sure the best way to present things. I've gotten a lot of great feedback on how better to present my ideas in this format. I should probably rewrite this list and make it more comprehensible at some point. I appreciate you taking the time to, give off the critique.

by Chet at November 07, 2009 11:17
I like this list, but agree with the commenter below that it could be longer - sequel? or expand this? ? Thanks for writing this (I like yor naruto post on this site as well).

good

  by anonymous at October 24, 2009 16:54
Man, your list is limited to one specific genre of anime. You only talk about those shonen fighting shows, you know, the ones with the ten-episode long fights consisting mostly of two guys yelling at each other. DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, you know them... (You know, the japanese equivalent to American super hero comics.) There's so much anime out there that isn't the way you described anime in your list. And still it's not understandable to "outsiders". Where are the giant robots? Where are the deep, meaninful storylines? Where's the weird psycho horror, the magical girls, the crazy fantasy worlds? And where are all those shows that could just have been normal movies, but happen to be animated...? You're missing a lot of stuff here which could make this list so much better. And besides, there's more to American comics than super heroes, too.

by phact0rri at October 24, 2009 19:48
The reason it was specifically Shonen, is that its an easier target than all of anime collectively. And I was watching a lot of shonen anime that was making me groan outloud.

by limitlessaccess at October 26, 2009 17:27
i have good suggestion for you phact0rri, dont watch anime if your IQ cannot comprehend what it is...

  by anonymous at October 24, 2009 16:45
Jackie Chan is probably the worst example of messing with physics that could have been chosen since most of what you see from him doesn't use wires. A better example is Jet Li, or pick a movie like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I think its valid to compare anime to western movies and live action at times because any time an artist in the U.S. tells a story through pictures its assumed to be for kids. But...you still have to remember how many bombs went off in Loony Toons. So while some of these points are humorous I think that people from the western world should take a minute to remember the ridiculousness we grew up with also....and then there's all our super hero movies and Star Wars Force (I guess you don't have to be muscular in western movies to lift heavy objects either...though then again that's why its called Science Fiction...)

by rredelf at October 24, 2009 16:25
why anime and manga fans can realize anime and manga is based on american first animations such as Betty Boop. Look at Betty Boop in japan, you are going to see a lot of anime cliches there. Also betty face is the base of anime characters, big eyes, small mouth and nose. And don´t forget the voice. Also, Sally the witch (1966) the first magic girl anime is based on Betwitched. Please stop thinking anime is original, japanese cultural elements are originals, the rest is inspired in the 30s cartoons

Poorly written. You're bad.

by Derp at October 24, 2009 15:35
This is a terrible list comprised of a person who clearly thinks they're superior for liking anime. Get over yourself. Also, you have no knowledge with "American" comics (which is silly to say anyway because a lot of these comics are European) because they are riddled with humor.

by phact0rri at October 24, 2009 20:03
B-b-but I like super hero comics. I just don't agree that they are riddled with humour at least the main ones. Sure Deadpool, Lobo, The Incredible Hercules, and what not have slap stick moments, but most super hero comics tend to be very focused on a more serious narrative and don't fall out of that at a moments notice. Also I didn't mean to come off looking like some sort of know it all. I actually prefer american comics over manga.
